DRMS Principal's Message

Hello, this is Kristen Faircloth, principal at DRMS, with your weekly Principal's Message.

The DRMS certified staff has nominated and voted on our Teacher of the Year.  With so many amazing teachers at DRMS, it is a difficult task to choose just one.  Congratulations to Ms. Chrissy Myers, 7th and 8th grade track 3 science teacher for being selected as our Teacher of the Year.  Ms. Myers is an exceptional teacher who builds strong relationships with children and goes out of her way to ensure her science lessons are rigorous and engaging for all children.  We are proud of Ms. Myers and excited that she is representing DRMS as the Teacher of the Year.

Tracks 2 & 4 Dolphins will enjoy a Cultural Arts performance on Monday, November 5th Donna Washington, storyteller.  Tracks 1 & 3 Dolphins will enjoy the Cultural Arts performance on Wednesday, November 28th.  Ask your children about the performance and what they learned.  Thank you to the DRMS PTA for providing this amazing opportunity for our students.

All WCPSS schools will open on a two-hour delay on November 6th due to the state and local elections.  Please mark your calendars accordingly.  The law requires that if local election officials ask to use a public school campus as a polling place, the request must be honored.  Measures will be in place to ensure the safety of school campuses during the polling process.

We are excited to announce a Family Math Night taking place on Thursday, November 8th from 5:30 PM - 6:30 PM in our Learning Commons.  We will provide an overview of the new Open Up curriculum before breaking out into grade-specific groups where teachers will provide tips and tricks for how you can help your child excel in math.  Childcare for kids under 10 and pizza for all that attend will be offered.  Please RSVP on our website to help us plan.

Southeast Raleigh High School will be at DRMS on Wednesday, November 7th to speak to all 8th graders during SMARTBLOCK.  Please ask your students about the 30 minute presentation to help your family make future decisions about schools.

DRMS' final football game will take place on Wednesday, November 7th at Pine Hollow Middle School starting at 3:45 PM.  Our final girls soccer and volleyball games will take place on Thursday, November 8th at Pine Hollow Middle School starting at 3:45 PM.

Wristbands for basketball tryouts will take place all week for 7th & 8th graders during their healthful living class.  Basketball tryouts begin Tuesday, November 13th for girls and Wednesday, November 14th for boys.

Track 2 Dolphins will track out on Friday, November 9th and we welcome our Track 3 Dolphins back on Tuesday, November 13 as Monday, November 12th is a holiday for all students and staff.

You have been invited to an information session about the change to a Track 4 schedule on November 14th from 6:30 PM - 7:30 PM at Durant Road Middle School.  This will be an opportunity for you to hear the history, rationale and benefits as well as share any questions you may have about the transition.  On our website, we have responded to some of the feedback we have received online. Please RSVP here if you plan to attend on Wednesday, November 14th.

McTeacher Night is back!  Our most popular Spirit Night will be held from 4:30-7:30 pm Thursday, Nov. 29, at the McDonald’s on the corner of Durant and Falls of Neuse.  We already have two dozen DRMS staff members signed up to sell sundaes, take orders at the counter and the drive-thru, and work the prize wheel.  McTeacher Night is a fun event and great source of support for our school.

The DRMS PTA is holding another Box Tops contest this month – the winning homeroom gets a donut party, so don’t forget to clip those Box Tops and send them to school with your child!

Spirit Nights, Box Top collections, and other fundraising activities help the PTA support activities that benefit our students.  Our fall cultural arts program this month features award -winning storyteller and author Donna Washington.  Donna has been storytelling for more than 30 years and the PTA is happy to help bring her to DRMS.

The PTA is looking forward to hosting the book fair. It will be held Dec. 3-7 – including evening hours Dec. 4 at the band concert – and they need volunteers to help set up Nov. 30 or work a shift the next week. Please email durantroadmiddlepta@gmail.com if you can help.

The PTA's next in-school Spirit Wear sale will be Friday, Nov. 30, during lunch. Hoodies are back in stock and selling fast! You can also order via your child’s homeroom or the office using this order form.

Thank you for supporting DRMS,

Kristen Faircloth
