Mustang News for November 1, 2020
Tuesday is a teacher workday for all WCPSS schools and there will be no remote or asynchronous learning activities. Students can, however, use Tuesday as a day to catch up on assignments from last week. Wednesday is a regular school day. We will welcome back to in-person learning Cohort 2/B students from our Regional Special Education classes on Monday. November 9 will be the first day for Cohort 3/C for all out Mustangs. The calendar for the rest of the semester is linked here. Please note the WCPSS identified Remote and Asynchronous Learning Days. Martin will follow the district created calendar for the remainder of the 2nd semester.
Virtual Academy Spring Registration: The window is open now through November 4th for families wishing to make a change for 2nd semester learning plans. Please read your registration options. As a reminder, families who select Virtual Academy for 2nd Semester will not return to in-person learning during the 2nd Semester. Families who select Plan A/B/C will return to in-person learning during the 2nd Semester.
Grade Level Corrals: Counseling and Student Services along with administrators will hold grade level Corrals this week for all students during the Enrichment period. The schedule is:

Grade level teachers, counselors and administrators will share the meet codes with students this week.
Revised Daily Schedule: We will adjust our daily bell schedule starting on November 9th to allow students the opportunity to eat in the cafeteria. Students who are learning remotely will follow the same bell schedule as the students who are in the building each week. Please take a moment to review the Revised Daily Bell Schedule and make adjustments to at home routines. Again, the revised schedule will begin on November 9, 2020.
1st Quarter Report Cards: As a reminder, we are not mailing 1st quarter report cards. Please log in to HomeBase/Parent Portal to review final grades for the 1st quarter. Families are encouraged to reach out to teachers, grade level counselors and grade level administrators if you have questions.
2nd Quarter Materials: Please contact your student’s grade level administrator or counselor or Ms. Bullock at the front desk if you did not pick up materials. They will pull the needed supplies and have them ready for you to pick up between 7:30am and 3:00pm. Please do not wait for in-person learning to pick up materials as students will need them well before the return.
District Asynchronous Learning Days: There will be a remote learning day on each week where there is not already an interruption to the week across all calendars. Asynchronous learning days are scheduled on the following dates: November 18, December 2, December 16, January 6, and January 13. These dates are included on weeks where all calendars have five full days of learning. New learning will continue on District Asynchronous Learning days and students are required to log in to each class for instructional activities.
Returning to in-person learning: We are grateful for the families who joined our Virtual Coffee on Wednesday. If you were unable to join either session, the presentation is available on the Martin website under Mustang News. Please reach out to an administrator if you have any questions about returning to in-person learning. Families are encouraged to continue to review the Return to Campus Checklist and Return to Campus Guide for Families. This document is updated routinely.
Dismissal at the end of the day will be staggered to allow for social distancing. Students will be walked from class to designated areas. Bus riders will board their buses for departure. Walkers will exit the building with the bus riders to walk home. Carpoolers will go to the cafeteria where they will sit like they do at lunch and wait to be called for their ride. These measures will allow us to maintain safe distancing at dismissal.
Lunch for in-person learning will look different this year. All students will eat lunch in the cafeteria, by grade level. Students will continue to have the opportunity to eat breakfast in the cafeteria. Breakfast and lunch will be free to all students through June 2021 and meal choice will be limited. Students will be spaced 6 feet apart, facing the same direction in the cafeteria and will only remove their face coverings to eat. While face coverings are off, students will not be able to talk. Again, unless actively eating or drinking in the cafeteria, face coverings are required.
In addition to small in-person learning classes, wearing a face covering and sanitizing stations throughout the building, water fountains will only be used to fill water bottles. Students will not be able to drink directly from the water fountain. Students are encouraged to bring a refillable water bottle to school each day.
We will also maintain one-way stairwells and students walking on the right while socially distancing to prevent congested transitions. Directional signs and arrows will be posted throughout the building to help remind students of new traffic patterns.
8th Grade Families: Broughton High School is offering virtual tours for prospective students and their parents/guardians! Dr. Ashburn, Broughton's Principal, and Dr. Brooks, Broughton's Magnet Coordinator, would love to have you join them for a virtual tour of all that Broughton has to offer students and their families. To help support families impacted by remote learning, Wake County Government has launched a new assistance program called WakeSUPPORTS. WakeSUPPORTS provides funding to working parents, so they can afford to pay for their K-8th grade student to attend virtual school at a safe location with reliable oversight, or receive before and after school care. It also can pay for fees that accompany subsidized childcare for families who meet specific income criteria.
Curbside Meal Pickup and Big Bus Food Truck Canceled Tuesday, Nov. 3
Meal pick up for curbside and Big Bus Food Truck will not be available on Tuesday Nov. 3 (Teacher Workday and Election Day). Two lunches and two breakfasts will be provided to families on Monday, Nov. 2. View locations at wcpss.net/food.
From the PTA: 6th Graders, Let's CHALK THE WALK - Saturday, 11/7
Join other 6th Grade Martin Students to beautify the sidewalks at school through CHALK ART. Registration is required so that we can adhere to the mandated maximum of 50 people for outside gatherings. And, everyone in attendance will be required to wear a mask and social distance. Take this opportunity to be on campus and meet other 6th graders before some students transition back to campus!
