Open House/Curriculum Night

Thank you to everyone who came out to our Open House on Thursday, September 26 despite the rain. We were really excited to see so many families come out in the pouring rain. If you could not attend the Open House,  please find time to schedule and attend a parent-teacher conference as the end of quarter one approaches. Quarter-One conferences are a great opportunity to ask specific questions about the curriculum and your child’s progress. If, for some reason, you have trouble scheduling a meeting with your child’s teacher, please reach out to administration with your concern.

Join us for lunch on October 17 or 18 for National School Lunch Week

In honor of National School Lunch Week, we invite you to join your child for lunch on Thursday, October 17 ( K, 2, & 4) and Friday, October 18 (1, 3, & 5). If you would like to join your child for lunch, please contact your child’s teacher for specific lunch details. If you plan to eat a cafeteria lunch, we ask that you inform your child’s teacher no less than 24 hours in advance so that the cafeteria can be notified. If you have multiple children on different days, you can join them both for lunch on the same day.  As a reminder, this is a lunch invitation only, and we ask that all visitors limit their visit to no more than 30 minutes. October is Disability History Awareness Month

Wake County’s Special Education Services remains committed to supporting the recognition of Disability History & Awareness Month in our schools. This year's theme is "Unity in Diversity." Learning Disabilities Awareness Month, celebrated every October, aims to increase awareness and understanding for individuals with learning disabilities while celebrating their unique strengths and contributions. This month and throughout the year staff will be encouraged to develop and use common language and understanding of how to recognize, support, and highlight this group’s different abilities.

Wear Orange on Wednesday,  October. 16 for Unity!

October is also National Bullying Prevention Month. This is a time for us to celebrate and bring awareness to our efforts around bullying prevention. Activities include the 12th annual Stand Up! Speak Out! Bullying Prevention Video Competition, World Bullying Prevention Day on Oct. 7, and Unity Day on Oct. 16. Join us in wearing ORANGE on October 16 to send the visible message of Unity in our Wiley CommUNITY.

Walkers and Parking

We understand that after school is a great time to connect with other families and allow children the opportunity to play with their school friends after a long day, but this should not interfere with the safety and security of our neighbors who live in the Wiley community.  Unfortunately, I have received serious complaints about Wiley families blocking driveways, hindering the flow of traffic, and parking illegally. This is dangerous and unacceptable behavior.   If you plan to continue to participate as a walker you have to follow the city rules for parking. If parking is difficult to secure, please join our carpool line. Carpool is another quick and easy way to pick up your child. I promise you we are done in 30 minutes or less daily. It's quite impressive. Failure to follow the parking rules can impact other parents. Please be safe!

Office Closed Daily 3:30 - 4:15

This year we will close our office for dismissal between 3:30 and 4:15. At this time, we will not be dismissing students from the office except in the event of emergencies. This is our busiest time of the day and we are completely committed to the safe and timely dismissal of all our students. We ask that if you know that you have to pick up a child for an appointment or special occasion you do so before this time or communicate the transportation change before 3:30. If your reason for early dismissal can wait we ask that you wait patiently in our carpool line as every minute of instruction matters. Fifteen minutes of missed instruction a day is more than an hour of missed instruction a week. Thank you in advance for your patience and understanding.

Happy Hispanic Heritage Month is September 15 - Oct. 15

National Hispanic Heritage Month is observed in the United States from September 15 to October 15 to recognize and celebrate the histories, cultures, and contributions of American citizens whose ancestors came from Spain, Mexico, the Caribbean, and Central and South America.  Join us in celebrating the rich cultural contributions and diversity of the Hispanic and Latinx communities.

Excused Absences for Religious/Educational Reasons

As you make plans for the school year, we ask that you submit requests for excused educational or religious absences well in advance. All requests should be submitted at least two to three weeks prior to the requested dates. According to policy, excused absences for educational reasons are authorized for educational experiences that are comparable to school academic experiences. The intent of the experience should be educational from the outset and an academic assignment (i.e. journal entry, reflection, presentation, images, project, etc.) will be required as verification of the educational experience.  Family trips and vacations that were not designed, initially, to be educational will not be excused. The form linked here should be used to request the excused dates prior to the absence.

School meal price increase

The Board approved a 25-cent price increase for school meals for the 2024-25 school year. At elementary schools, full-paid breakfast will be $1.75 and lunch will be $3.50. At middle and high schools, full-paid breakfast will be $2.00 and lunch will be $3.75. The price increase is necessary to cover rising costs of food, supplies, and wages and benefits for staff.

New bus delay notification system

Starting this school year, parents of students who ride the bus now can receive up-to-the-minute notifications via text and/or email when their child’s bus is delayed. The system has been in use for year-round schools and has worked well, saving staff time and providing parents information quickly. To receive the notification messages, parents will need to make sure they have given permission to receive text and/or email notifications via SchoolMessenger. Bus delays also can be viewed by clicking on the Live Bus Updates link on an individual school’s transportation page, or by visiting wcpss.net/busupdates. Parents also can still track your child’s bus using the Here Comes the Bus app.

Teacher Shout Out

This year we want to share and shout out all the amazing things that Wiley teachers are doing for your students. If you have an amazing story to share or just want to tell a teacher how much you appreciate all they do, use this link:  Comments will be shared with the teacher and the Wiley staff.

Fall Festival

Thursday, October 10, 5-7 pm

We are thrilled to announce that this year's Fall Festival theme is "Dia de los Muertos"! Join us for an evening filled with inflatables, arts & crafts, food trucks, pay-what-you-can pizza, and a special performance by the Continuing Band and Singing Stars at 5pm in the cafeteria. We look forward to celebrating together and creating wonderful memories as a school community.

We will also collect non-perishable food donations for the Food Bank of Central & Eastern NC’s Students Against Hunger campaign which helps to ensure that no one in our community goes hungry.

We’ll need lots of hands to make this event a success, so if you are interested in volunteering on the day with set-up, art stations, or breakdown, please sign up for a 30-minute slot here.

Fall Book Fair

October 21-25

Get ready for the Fall Book Fair! This year's theme is "Believe," celebrating books that explore the ideas of growth and change. It's a fantastic opportunity to foster a love of reading and encourage our students to believe in their potential!

Donate to Wiley PTA Book Fairy. The Book Fairy program ensures that every student who desires a new book from the Fall Book Fair receives one. Help us fund this important program by buying a few books for our students.

We need your help to make this book fair successful! Please consider volunteering for a time slot during the book fair - it’s a fun and rewarding way to support our students.

Lost and Found

Please check out the current Lost and Found inventory. You may claim your item in the cafeteria. Items left in Lost & Found for one month will be donated on 10/18. Please remember to label your child's belongings to help us return them to their rightful owners. Let’s keep our Lost and Found clear! Thank you for your cooperation.
