Single Subject Acceleration

Single Subject Acceleration is the practice of assigning a student to a higher grade level in either math or reading in order to provide appropriately challenging learning opportunities. Any student in grades K-7 can have their parent request SSA testing in math or reading. The best place to begin when considering SSA for your child is to talk to your child's teachers. They can help you to assess whether your child is ready to skip a whole grade level's content.

If you decide to pursue testing for your child, you may request testing in Mathematics or English Language Arts beginning April 1st. The WCPSS SSA test request form will only be available from April 1st at 8 am to April 12th at 5 pm. They will not accept requests before or after this time period.

$120 Grocery Cards Available

The North Carolina Department of Health and Human Services (NCDHHS) will soon be mailing $120 “SUN BUCKS” grocery cards per child to all families who qualify for free or reduced price lunch as of March 28, 2024.  The card will be automatically mailed to you if you qualify, but your address must be up to date with the school in order to receive it.  For more information, see this website:

If you'd like to apply to get breakfast and lunch for free to automatically receive the grocery card, the application is here: They've really raised the financial limits this year to get free lunch, so lots of families qualify when they haven't before!

Dreambox Usage

Students are expected to complete at least 5 lessons a week in Dreambox. A Harvard University study has shown that just 60 minutes of DreamBox lessons per week can fast-track your students up to two grade levels in a year. We recommend that students complete five or more lessons per week with DreamBox Learning because students who complete five lessons each week show more math growth than those who complete fewer lessons. One lesson takes about 15 minutes. Dreambox is adaptive and constantly responding to the skills and understanding of your child. Having your child complete at least one Dreambox lesson a week can help your child’s teacher better understand their need, extend their learning, and/or address learning gaps.
