Martin Luther King Jr. Day | January 16, 2023 (No School)
The third Monday in January is observed as Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Day in the United States and celebrates the life and achievements of Dr. King as well as recognizing the Civil Rights Movement that he championed. Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Day is both a federal and a WCPSS holiday.
I will offer additional office hours for families who wish to meet. This is an opportunity for individuals interested in scheduling time to discuss school matters. Slots are first come first serve. To secure a slot you will need to visit the link here and select the desired slot. If the matter is urgent or the times available do not work for your schedule, families are always welcome to reach out via email (tavery@wcpss.net) and request an appointment. For specific questions, comments, or concerns that do not require a meeting feel free to complete this link.
Fourth and fifth-grade AIG identification
If you are interested in nominating your 4th or 5th-grade Wiley student for AIG services, now is the time to submit their name for the spring screening window. Please fill out the following Google form by January 19th. If your child was previously identified, you do not need to nominate them again in the same subject area(s). You can submit nominations at any time during the school year, but any nominations made after January 19th will be considered in the fall screening window of 2024. If you have any questions, you can contact our AIG teachers: Jill Molloy (jmolloy@wcpss.net) or Michelle Hoyles (mhoyles@wcpss.net).

Universal Pre-K Application Now Open
Do you have a child who will be 4 years old by August 31, 2024 and is a Wake County resident? If so, consider applying for Wake Pre-K through the Universal Application. The Wake Pre-K application allows consideration for free, safe, and fun Pre-K program options.
Participating programs include NC Pre-Kindergarten (NC Pre-K), WCPSS Title I, and Telamon Head Start. To learn more, visit the Wake Pre-K Application Center.
Enrollment into the Wake County Public School System Title I Pre-K program is based on the academic need of the child. NC Pre-K and Head Start are prioritized for families with low incomes and other related eligibility requirements. When your application is processed, your child will be considered for the program that best matches your family based on the criteria.
Does that sound like it may benefit your child? Apply today!
Rising kindergarten and 5th-grade Families
Students in 5th grade who would like to continue in a magnet school at the next level MUST apply. Apply at wcpss.schoolmint.com. The deadline is January 25. Students may apply to any magnet school that is an option for their address (review at wcpss.net/eligible) Students with magnet status should be selected if they request their pathway school. See pathways at wcpss.net/pathways. Siblings rising into kindergarten, sixth grade, and ninth grade MUST apply and will be assigned with an older sibling who will still be assigned to that magnet school for the 24-25 school year. Students at Wiley have the highest priority at the TRADITIONAL CALENDAR GT Magnet Middle school for their address (Carnage, Ligon, Martin or Zebulon) as their pathway school. They have priority 3 in an application for Moore Square and are not guaranteed to be selected for that school.
Dreambox Usage
Students are expected to complete at least 5 lessons a week in Dreambox. A Harvard University study has shown that just 60-minutes of DreamBox lessons per week can fast-track your students up to two grade levels in a year. We recommend that students complete five or more lessons per week with DreamBox Learning because students who complete five lessons each week show more math growth than those who complete fewer lessons. One lesson takes about 15 minutes. Dreambox is adaptive and constantly responding to the skills and understanding of your child. Having your child complete at least one Dreambox lesson a week can help your child’s teacher better understand their need, extend their learning, and/or address learning gaps.
Wiley PTA Annual Fund - Please Help Us Close the Funding Gap
Wiley PTA Annual Fund is responsible for funding many of the programs and initiatives that our school community relies on—everything from classroom technology to events like International Night to supply stipends for teachers. The Annual Fund is currently facing a significant funding gap that may impact students, teachers, and staff. Of our $23,000 goal for the year, we have raised $13,000 to date. Giving to Annual Fund last year at this time stood at $20,000.
One simple way that you can help out is by joining the PTA, which includes a donation of $15 or more. If you are able to give at a higher level, please consider either a one-time or monthly donation, which can be made here. In addition, many companies offer corporate matching programs, doubling or tripling the impact of your contribution. Every donation, no matter the size, makes a significant impact. Thank you for your ongoing support of Wiley PTA.
Lost and Found
Here is the current Lost and Found inventory. Items that have been in the Lost and Found since 12/8 will be donated next Tuesday, 1/16. You may claim your item(s) in the Lost and Found Room in the cafeteria.

Cecilia Rawlins Fund
The Cecilia Rawlins Fund extends our heartfelt gratitude to the entire Wiley community for their incredible support and advocacy throughout November and December. Through initiatives such as the fundraising table at the Boylan Heights Art Walk, corporate matching, and individual donations, we successfully provided 50 families with $200 gift cards to Walmart, offering valuable assistance during the winter break.
The CRF board and administration are not only grateful but also immensely proud to be a part of this compassionate and supportive village.
Thank you to everyone who contributed to making a positive impact on the lives of those in need.
