Report Cards Go Home Monday (10/13)

Report Cards will go home on Monday, November 13. Unfortunately, there may be a brief delay with fourth-grade report cards as we await tech support with class rosters and PowerSchool. If you have questions regarding your child’s grades you are encouraged to contact your child’s homeroom teacher or the teacher responsible for the grade.

Picture Retakes

A photographer from Strawbridge Studios will be at Wiley on Tuesday ( 11/28) to photograph Fall Retake pictures.

This link will allow parents to sign up to receive updates via email regarding your child's school portraits. These updates include promotions, additional deals, and the ability to order more pictures at a later time. When entering student information, you should enter your child’s name as it is on file at the school.

Thank you for your assistance in helping us deliver a smooth school picture experience! We look forward to seeing you soon.

November Office Hours

During November, I will be offering conference slots for families who wish to meet. This is an opportunity for any families interested in scheduling a predetermined time to discuss school matters. Currently I have three slots a week available that are first come first serve. To secure a slot you will need to visit the link here and select the desired slot. If the times available do not work, families are always welcome to reach out via email and request an appointment. Also if there are specific questions, comments, or concerns that you would like me to address please feel free to complete this link

November is American Indian Heritage Month

This month we honor and celebrate the history and heritage of American Indians. North Carolina is home to eight state-recognized Indian tribes: the Coharie, the Eastern Band of Cherokee, the Haliwa-Saponi, the Lumbee, the Meherrin, the Occaneechi Band of the Saponi Nation, the Sappony, and the Waccamaw-Siouan. An American Indian Heritage Month document provides schools with information, resources, and strategies for celebrating at the school level.

Carpool

Please continue to follow the carpool pattern during dismissal. To eliminate confusion, we will allow cars to move to the cones at 3:30. Hopefully, this will prevent others from jumping in line. We ask that you not move into the parking lot before 3:30 as this could potentially disrupt parents who pick up their child early as well as emergency responders in the event of an emergency. The office will continue to close from 3:30 until 4:15 during afternoon dismissal.

Kids Heart Challenge

This year, our school will be learning about staying strong in body and mind, we’ll get moving with fun activities, meet kids with special hearts, and raise funds for the health of all hearts. Plus, they’ll feel good for doing good! Download the Kids Heart Challenge App or visit heart.org/KHC to register today and earn your own BE THE TORCH WRISTBAND so you can help light the way

A Century of Wiley Memories

We would like to collect more than 100 stories to celebrate the years of memories that represent Wiley. If you or someone you know would like to share their story please share this link or add their story. Our students will use these stories to create a podcast. The link can be found here: https://forms.gle/CZ9iJnTqKaaRCBXCA We will be sharing the first recordings on the website.

Arrival

Make sure that you have your child at school by 9:15 am every morning. We will continue to demonstrate grace as you make your best effort to arrive before the tardy bell rings; however,  we will soon begin marking students tardy.  The first bell to allow students into the building rings at 8:45 am with instruction beginning at the sound of the 9:15 bell. Consistently late students consistently miss instruction.

Office Closed Daily 3:30 - 4:15

This year we will close our office for dismissal between 3:30 and 4:15. At this time, we will not be dismissing students from the office except in the event of emergencies. This is our busiest time of the day and we are completely committed to the safe and timely dismissal of all our students. We ask that if you know that you have to pick up a child for an appointment or special occasion you do so before this time or communicate the transportation change before 3:30. If your reason for early dismissal can wait we ask that you wait patiently in our carpool line as every minute of instruction matters. Fifteen minutes of missed instruction a day is more than an hour of missed instruction a week.  Thank you in advance for your patience and understanding.

Counselor’s Corner with Mrs. O

With the school year back in full swing, we want to do a check in with caregivers. We know that the transition back to school is not always an easy one. The excitement of returning to the classroom can also come with anxiety for children, school staff, and caregivers.

You can reduce stress by building healthy coping skills into your routines — and helping your children and students do the same. The Child Mind Institute suggests a few simple strategies to try:

Check your thoughts: When faced with a stressful situation or negative thought, try talking back to your worries. Ask: What’s the worst thing that can happen? What’s the best thing that can happen? What’s the most likely thing that will happen?

Talk about feelings openly: Both kids and caregivers can benefit from open and honest acknowledgment of the emotions, both positive and negative, associated with the back-to-school season. Check-in with your child regularly, ask open-ended questions and validate whatever they share (“That does sound like a hard situation!”).

Practice mindfulness: Techniques such as deep breathing exercises and muscle relaxation can help you feel more grounded and relaxed.

I am here to help. For further discussion, you can reach me by calling the school at 919-856-7723 or via email: nomonte@wcpss.net
