November Office Hours

During November, I will be offering conference slots for families that wish to meet. This is an opportunity for any families interested in scheduling a predetermined time to discuss school matters. Currently I have three slots a week available that are first come first serve. To secure a slot you will need to visit the link here and select the desired slot. If the times available do not work, families are always welcome to reach out via email and request an appointment. Also if there are specific questions, comments, or concerns that you would like me to address please feel free to complete this link

TSI -A Letter

Wiley has been designated as a Targeted Support & Improvement Additional Targeted Support (TSI-AT) school by the North Carolina State Board of Education.  A letter will go home today explaining what this identification means for Wiley and the strategies that are in place to address the discrepancies with our subgroup data.

November is American Indian Heritage Month

This month we honor and celebrate the history and heritage of American Indians. North Carolina is home to eight state-recognized Indian tribes: the Coharie, the Eastern Band of Cherokee, the Haliwa-Saponi, the Lumbee, the Meherrin, the Occaneechi Band of the Saponi Nation, the Sappony, and the Waccamaw-Siouan. An American Indian Heritage Month document provides schools with information, resources, and strategies for celebrating at the school level.

Dr. Mary Whitehouse (School Psychologist)  Week is Nov. 6-10

This year's theme is “Let’s Grow Together.” This week is an opportunity to highlight the role of school psychologists and school-based mental health services in promoting student success. Learn more on WakeConnect. Share your recognition and appreciation for your school psychologist this week by posting on social media and tagging: @wcpss_schoolpsy @nasponline #SchoolPsychWeek

Carpool

Please continue to follow the carpool pattern during dismissal. To eliminate confusion, we will allow cars to move to the cones at 3:30. Hopefully, this will prevent others from jumping in line. We ask that you not move into the parking lot before 3:30 as this could potentially disrupt parents who pick up their child early as well as emergency responders in the event of an emergency. The office will continue to close from 3:30 until 4:15 during afternoon dismissal.

Kids Heart Challenge

This year, our school will be learning about staying strong in body and mind, we’ll get moving with fun activities, meet kids with special hearts, and raise funds for the health of all hearts. Plus, they’ll feel good for doing good! Download the Kids Heart Challenge App or visit heart.org/KHC to register today and earn your own BE THE TORCH WRISTBAND so you can help light the way

A Century of Wiley Memories

We would like to collect more than 100 stories to celebrate the years of memories that represent Wiley. If you or someone you know would like to share their story please share this link or add their story. Our students will use these stories to create a podcast. The link can be found here: https://forms.gle/CZ9iJnTqKaaRCBXCA We will be sharing the first recordings on the website.

Arrival

Make sure that you have your child at school by 9:15 am every morning. We will continue to demonstrate grace as you make your best effort to arrive before the tardy bell rings; however,  we will soon begin marking students tardy.  The first bell to allow students into the building rings at 8:45 am with instruction beginning at the sound of the 9:15 bell. Consistently late students consistently miss instruction.

Excused Absences for Religious/Educational Reasons

As you plan for the school year, we ask that you submit requests for excused educational or religious absences well in advance. All requests should be submitted at least two to three weeks before the requested dates. According to policy, excused absences for educational reasons are authorized for educational experiences that are comparable to school academic experiences.

The intent of the experience should be educational from the outset and an academic assignment (i.e. journal entry, reflection, presentation, images, project, etc.) will be required as verification of the educational experience.  Family trips and vacations that were not designed, initially, to be educational will not be excused. The form linked here should be used to request the excused dates before the absence.

Office Closed Daily 3:30 - 4:15

This year we will close our office for dismissal between 3:30 and 4:15. At this time, we will not be dismissing students from the office except in the event of emergencies. This is our busiest time of the day and we are completely committed to the safe and timely dismissal of all our students. We ask that if you know that you have to pick up a child for an appointment or special occasion you do so before this time or communicate the transportation change before 3:30. If your reason for early dismissal can wait we ask that you wait patiently in our carpool line as every minute of instruction matters. Fifteen minutes of missed instruction a day is more than an hour of missed instruction a week.  Thank you in advance for your patience and understanding.
