Statewide tornado March 8

All Wake County Schools are expected to participate in the statewide tornado drill on Wednesday, Mar. 8 in connection with Severe Weather Awareness Week. At 10 am, students will practice the appropriate tornado drill procedures with their entire class during this time. The drill should last no more than 15 minutes and will involve students leaving their class and taking cover in a safe space away from windows and exterior walls. If you have any questions regarding the drill please feel free to reach out to administration or your child’s homeroom teacher.

Student Progress/Promotion Letter

We are in the process of analyzing quarter two student data.  Based on the student progress and teacher input, we will determine who will be receiving a midyear letter regarding promotion/retention. Per Wake County policy, we are required to notify parents during quarter three if their child is not meeting grade-level benchmarks.

This letter does not suggest that your child will be retained, but that a promotion plan will be put in place to assist us in working together to support your child’s academic growth and promotion.

If you receive a letter and you have not yet met with your child’s teacher, you are encouraged to do so.

Middle School Registration

This month 5th graders will be registering for their middle school classes. Please have a talk with your child concerning their interests so that they are prepared to make an informed decision.

Single Subject Acceleration (SSA) - What is SSA?

SSA is the practice of placing a student in a higher-grade level in ONE subject area. This type of acceleration is for the purpose of providing access to appropriately challenging learning opportunities in either math OR English Language Arts. Only students who are currently enrolled and attending a WCPSS school during the open nomination and testing window are eligible to be considered for SSA.

How can I learn more about the SSA process and what it entails?

There will be both an in-person session and a virtual session available. We will also provide a recording of the session in case you cannot attend either session.

Parenting Part 1: Tips for Positive Discipline

While parenting is a joy, it can also be exhausting. This is the first segment in a two part series on parenting tips to assist you. Here are a few to help you parent in a positive way:

  1. Show respect by focusing on the behavior, not the child.

  2. Be firm, fair, and consistent. Consistency is key!

  3. Physical punishment teaches children that violence is ok.

  4. Act quickly so your child associates misbehavior with consequences.

  5. Fit the consequence to the behavior. For example, if your child draws on the wall, the consequence can be to clean the wall.

  6. Cool down before you discipline- deep breaths. Remember, you are the role model.

  7. Catch them doing the right thing & give specific praise about the behavior you like.

Part 2 will come next month! I am here to help. If you would like some more parenting tips, I can be by calling 919-856-7723 or via e-mail: nomonte@wcpss.net

Make it a great day!
