Magnet Information
The application for Magnet and Year-Round schools closes on January 25. Applications are not first-come, first-served. Families are notified via email if they receive a seat at a school they requested. Applicants will be notified of their results on February 23, 2023 via email. This information will also be in the parent account.
Application School Options - Use the following link to determine magnet school options for your address.
5th-grade Magnet families must apply to continue in a magnet school at the next level. You will be considered a priority for your pathway school. To see pathways visit wcpss.net/pathways. Magnet students at Wiley have the highest priority to the traditional calendar GT magnet middle school for their address. this includes Carnage, Ligon, Martin, or Zebulon middle school. This does not include Moore Square Middle School.
All Magnet families - NOW is the time to apply for an entry-grade (kindergarten, sixth grade, and ninth grade) sibling to join their sibling who is returning to a magnet school for the 23-24 school year. Some siblings of magnet students have already been assigned.
Birthdays and Celebrations
Moving into the new year, we will be limiting the number of celebrations and birthday events that we have each month. This includes explicitly bringing in whole-class treats for birthday celebrations. Our goal is to be more inclusive while still acknowledging students who celebrate birthdays and decrease the number of sweet treats we provide students throughout the month. As a result, birthday celebrations will now be once a month and at the teacher’s discretion. This means that parents are expected to communicate with homeroom teachers before bringing in birthday items for a whole class. Under no circumstances is it appropriate to drop off birthday items for a class without first talking to the teacher. In response to this new expectation, families are more than welcome and encouraged to eat lunch with their child and even participate in a brief learning activity (storytime, art activity, etc.) as a birthday treat. However, this should also be communicated to the classroom teacher prior to a visit. If at this time you have already been provided permission to bring in a class treat for a celebration, this message may not apply. Please feel free to email me if you have questions or concerns.
Absences and Tardies
Per policy, we will send home letters for excessive tardies and absences. Five or more tardies and unexcused absences (three, six, and ten days) will result in a district letter sent to your address on file. The letter is intended to notify you of missed instruction and to make you aware of the days absent on file. As a reminder, In the event of an absence, you should do one of the following: 1) provide a written note to the classroom teacher upon the child’s return OR 2) send an email to the classroom teacher AND data manager (ncwise620@wcpss.net).
Excused Absences for Religious/Educational Reasons
As a reminder, we ask that you submit requests for excused educational or religious absences well in advance. All requests should be submitted at least two to three weeks prior to the requested dates. According to board policy, excused absences for educational reasons are authorized for educational experiences that are comparable to school academic experiences. The intent of the experience should be educational from the outset and an academic assignment (i.e journal entry, reflection, presentation, images, project, etc.) will be required as verification of the educational experience. Family trips and vacations that were not designed, initially, to be educational will not be excused (i.e. amusement parks, family visits, popular cities). The form linked here should be used to request the excused dates prior to the absence.
