Principal Message 12-12-22

Happy December!

Thank you all for your dedication and donations provided thus far in the year. . As I come upon the completion of my first year at Wiley, I can truly say that I am grateful to lead and work with such a thoughtful and generous group of families. As I prepare for the winter break and this season of giving, I will reflect upon all the ways you have graciously given your time, energy, and resources.

As a reminder, we will be out of school from Thursday, December 22 until Monday, January 2. We will return ready to learn on Tuesday, January 3 and my hope is that each of you has an enjoyable break however you choose to celebrate. I look forward to seeing you in the New Year!  Take care of yourself and your family.

Lockdown Drill

We recently had our first Lockdown drill with the support of our district security administrator and local law enforcement.  According to their feedback, all students and staff took the exercise seriously and followed the appropriate protocols and procedures. Please remember that we are expected to have at least two lockdown drills a year, with one each semester. With our first lockdown drill, we were provided some flexibility around scheduling, although this may not be the case for our second drill.

New Area Superintendent and Board Member

Dr. Elena Ashburn has been named the new area superintendent for our area. She stepped into her role last week. Dr. Ashburn was most recently the principal of Broughton High School. Also, recently sworn in as the board member to represent the Wiley community and district 6  is Sam Hershey. Mr. Hershey is a Douglas Elementary parent and is excited to be visiting the schools represented in District 6. Both Mr. Hershey and Dr. Ashburn will be visiting Wiley in the near future.

Wiley Gives Back

We will continue to participate in  Wiley Gives Back this week. Monday will be Athletic Wear Day and we are asking all students to wear their best athletic attire as we participate in wellness activities. Tuesday is Book Character Day where we will be collecting and donating books for Wake up and Read. I will continue to send school messengers with reminders for each day as we count down to winter break.

Gifting Made Easy

Considering gifts of appreciation for teachers or staff this holiday season?

The PTA is excited to help make your holiday gifting much easier!

GiftCrowd is an online tool that makes it easy to send gifts to any or all teachers and staff in just a few clicks.

Simply make your gifts by December 22nd at 8am and our teachers and staff will receive an email with their gifts and greetings. They will then choose how to redeem their gifts into one or more of hundreds of types of gift cards, including Amazon, Barnes & Noble, Athleta, and more.

Any gifts to teams will be divided up equally among the members of that team.  The tool is free for both the gift giver and the recipient.

Let's show Wiley's teachers and staff how much we appreciate them!

Paving the Way - Legacy Bricks

Do you know about Wiley's Legacy Bricks? These bricks not only create a welcoming walkway to Wiley’s front door but they celebrate students past and present, teachers and staff, community members, and generous local businesses. Each brick is $150 and can be engraved with a message up to 50 characters. A brick order form is active now until December 31 for early spring installation.

Funds raised by brick sales go to the Wiley Elementary Foundation which works to supplement teacher and staff salaries beyond what the county and state provide.

Spirit Night at Mellow Mushroom

Wear your tie-dye and join us at the Peace Street Mellow Mushroom on December 15th for our first Spirit Night of the year! Mellow Mushroom will generously donate 10% of all dine-in and carry-out purchases made between 4pm and 9pm to the Wiley PTA. Please share this opportunity with family and friends – the larger our turnout, the bigger their donation.

Don’t forget to tell the server or cashier that your meal is for the Wiley Elementary PTA in order for it to count as a Spirit Night purchase. Additional details are here.

We’ll see you there!
