Principal Message 11-7-22
Happy November!
This is a reminder that this will be a very short week. Tuesday, November 8, is Election Day and a ‘calendar out’ teacher workday. In addition Thursday, November 10 will be an early release day with no school on Friday, November 11 in observance of Veteran’s Day. Early Release dismissal begins at 1:45 pm.
Dr. Mary Whitehouse Week is Nov. 7 - 11
November 7 - 11 is National School Psychology Week. During this week, we will highlight and recognize the amazing work of our school psychologist, Dr. Mary Whitehouse. This year's theme is Shine. Feel free to let Dr. Whitehouse know how much she helps our students SHINE at Wiley.
2022 Capital Improvement Program
November 8 is Election Day. Participate in your civic duty and vote. Learn more about your voting options: www.ncsbe.gov/voting.
The upcoming Wake County election ballot will include a proposal for a $530.7 M school bond that will address our schools' critical safety and maintenance needs. Review the information about the bond, linked above. The bond will l help:
-
fund rebuilding seven existing schools,
-
provide significant repairs to schools,
-
update equipment,
-
fund the construction of five new schools on new sites.
Lockdown Drill
Wake County Public Schools are required to participate in lockdown drills each year. Most schools participate in at least one each semester Staff and students use this drill to practice steps in the event of a threat inside or outside the building. Lockdown drills are unannounced and present an opportunity to receive feedback from law enforcement and district security. We will have conversations about these drills with students but will not share the actual date as we need the practice to be as authentic as possible.
Excused Absences for Religious/Educational Reasons
As a reminder, we ask that you submit requests for excused educational or religious absences well in advance. All requests should be submitted at least two to three weeks before the requested dates. According to board policy, excused absences for educational reasons are authorized for educational experiences that are comparable to school academic experiences. The intent of the experience should be educational from the outset and an academic assignment (i.e journal entry, reflection, presentation, images, project, etc.) will be required as verification of the educational experience. Family trips and vacations that were not designed, initially, to be educational will not be excused. The form linked here should be used to request the excused dates before the absence.
School administrators are now able to use TalkingPoints to send and receive messages as well as send polls. Continue to be patient with us as this access is new as of October 25.
Please make sure that you have connected to Talking Points to receive communication from your classroom teachers. Talking Points allows families and teachers to communicate through a two-way multilingual platform. With Talking Points, you can reply in your language and the teacher will receive the message in English. The software used in Talking Points syncs directly to the contact information we have in Powerschool. If you believe you have trouble connecting or communicating with your child’s classroom teacher via Talking Points first contact the teacher via email and if the problem is not resolved check with our Data Manager (ncwise620@wcpss.net) to ensure that the information we have on file is correct.
Do you have a Question, Comment, or Concern? If so, fill out the form attached above and someone will get back to you within the week, if necessary. This link will be provided in all future messages. Items that receive lots of energy will be shared in the Principal’s Message. Other items that require a response will receive an individual response.
Preguntas, Comentarios, Inquietudes
News from the Cecilia Rawlins Fund
We are so appreciative of the opportunity to spend time with many from our Wiley community at the Wiley Way Soiree on Saturday, October 29th. For those that were unable to make it, we missed you.
Support of the Cecilia Rawlins Fund directly impacts the Wiley community and our families at school. As we approach the holiday season, we must ensure our families in need are supported during winter break. In past years, we provided about 60 of our families with a $200 gift card to address those needs.
We need your help to raise $12,000 to fund these gift cards. You can give directly by clicking here: http://rawlinsfund.org/.
Thank you for your continued support of the Cecilia Rawlins Fund and our Wiley Elementary families. We are so grateful to have you as part of our community.
