    Carpool Procedures

Please remember that safety is our number one priority, followed by efficiency in regards to carpool. Please note that the left lane is dedicated to Holly Grove Middle and the right lane is dedicated to Holly Grove Elementary. It is essential that you are not straddling the line which may prevent a family or emergency vehicle from passing to get to their respective school/destination.

In addition, be mindful of your speed and that you are looking both ways as you turn the corners. Finally, we request that you DO NOT pass vehicles while students are loading and unloading or if anyone is attempting to cross within the parking lot. We have a very active parking lot in the AM/PM and we want to ensure that students, staff, and visitors can navigate the parking lot safely. Thank you for your vigilance.

    YMCA: Before and After School

The Kraft Family YMCA will offer Before and After School Programs on-site here at Holly Grove Elementary. Holly Grove Elementary Parents/Guardians,

I hope you’ve had a wonderful weekend! Please see the updates below so that you can plan accordingly.

    Return to School Updates

By now I am sure you have heard about Governor Cooper’s announcement that North Carolina Elementary schools may return to in-person instruction should school districts choose to do so. The WCPSS Board of Education has already scheduled a meeting for next Tuesday to further the discussion about returning to schools and will now have more options available to consider. While the full plan for the return to in-person instruction has not yet been decided, we will share information with you as soon as we get any additional details.

    Parent/Guardian Survey Results

Thank you for your participation in the parent/guardian survey. We had 616

responses, which represents 67% of our students. See key takeaways below -

    • 616 parent/guardian responses
    • Almost equivalent responses from each grade level
    • Most feel that the amount of time that their child is asked to engage in live learning is about right.
    • Most feel that the amount of assignments given is about right.
    • Most feel that the amount of time that it is taking for their child to complete their assignments is about right.
    • Many are favorable for keeping the schedule as is.
      • If adjustments are made the following areas were suggested -
        • Specials
        • AM/PM (shorter day)
        • Reducing live instruction / less screen time
    • The best thing about this year so far...the TEACHERS! ❤️
    • Areas of frustration -
      • Technology
      • Not being in school
      • Too many breaks
      • Family scheduling (daycare, babysitter, working families)
      • Time management/communication

    Parent Survey Results Graphs

Thanks as well for sharing your comments with us about something that was working well, and what was causing you the most frustration. These comments were collected anonymously, and have been shared with each grade level team to review. I have also shared the overall results with WCPSS district leadership. While there are some things certainly out of our control at the school level, we will look for how we can respond to your concerns and better support your children.

Beginning of the Year (B.O.Y) Survey

If you haven’t taken the survey, please do so by tomorrow Monday, September 14th at 12:00 PM. We will use the information from the survey to see what is working well for you, as well as where we might be able to improve some things currently in place.

Remember, if you have a child in more than one grade level at our school, we would appreciate it if you could complete the survey for each child, as we are collecting the data by grade level.

    IStation Assessing

On Friday, September 18th, all classroom teachers K-4 will be coordinating the Beginning of the Year Istation Assessment in Literacy. This will be followed by independent classroom assignments and pre-recorded Spanish instruction.

If you would like more information, a Google Meet session will be held for parents on the Istation Assessment Wednesday, September 16th at 12:30 PM and Thursday, September 17th at 6:00 PM.

Virtual Academy News (Mrs. Fricke - lfricke@wcpss.net )

We hope that your experience in Virtual Academy and remote learning is going well. Teachers are also learning technology and we appreciate your patience if things do not always go as planned. It can be very stressful to try something with students for the first time, however, the more times it is attempted the better it gets for everyone. Please continue to remind students not to use the chat feature unless directed by the teacher and to mute themselves unless directed to unmute by the teacher. This is particularly important in Specials when there are many children present. Your child's teacher may reach out to you if your child is having problems adhering to "Google Meet" rules.

If you experience problems with technology, please reach out to Ms. Starkey at jstarkey@wcpss.net and if you have questions about Virtual Academy in general please contact Ms. Fricke at lfricke@wcpss.net

    Technology Update

WCPSS is continuing to distribute devices to those that requested them. Emails are being sent out to those that completed the technology survey or have submitted his/her name to request a device. Teachers and staff will work with students and families that do not have access to technology in the coming weeks. We appreciate your support and patience as we navigate technology concerns together.

    Holly Grove Elementary Parents/Guardians,

We did it! We’ve made it through the first full week of instruction. Thank you for your continued support as we navigate the challenges of remote learning. Your patience and understanding are greatly appreciated. Our teachers have shared how nice it was to see and work with students again! We have also heard from both teachers and parents about the challenges you have had to deal with this week, and we know that this is a huge adjustment for all of us. Thank you for continuing to be patient with teachers as we learn how to best provide appropriate online instruction and assignments, and we promise to be patient with you for the challenges that you may face in implementing virtual learning.

    Labor Day Holiday

Just a reminder that schools are closed on Monday, September 7th in observance of the Labor Day holiday. Students are not expected to log in, and no live instruction will be taking place on that day. I hope you get to “unplug” that day and enjoy some relaxing time with your family!

Important: Delay in Chromebook and Hotspot Distribution

There has been a delay in the shipment of devices from the supplier.  WCPSS Technology Services is inviting parents that have received emails and have not picked up devices at this point to pick up requested devices on Tuesday, September 8th or Friday, September 11th at one of the following locations:

    • Apex High School - 1501 Laura Duncan Rd, Apex
    • Enloe High School - 128 Clarendon Crescent, Raleigh
    • Knightdale High School - 100 Bryan Chalk Lane, Knightdale

Distribution center hours will be 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. They will also have distribution hours the following week.

Specials Update: Effective Tuesday, September 8th

Thank you so much for your family’s amazing support this week as we all navigate this new challenge. We recognize that we are learning as we go and we are taking you feedback and making adjustments as best we can.

To make it easier for all to access specials each day we will make a change. As of Tuesday, September 8th we will be using the Google Classroom generated meet code that can be accessed in each specialist’s Google Classroom Banner. We hope this will make it easier and help your child become more independent. Please be sure your child is connected to the Classrooms of all specialists prior to class next week.

You can find the Google Classroom Codes for all specials here: https://docs.google.com/document/d/16z99lQfI6Gah8HvzDFIl6oAWXZ0NosBh3Ss1fPXmA18/edit?usp=sharing

Virtual Academy News (Mrs. Fricke - lfricke@wcpss.net )

We hope that if you have been experiencing challenges with online learning that those issues have improved! All teachers have been working hard to meet the academic needs of students as well as solving technology concerns. Please remind students not to use the chat feature unless directed by the teacher and to mute themselves unless directed to unmute by the teacher. These two simple tasks are challenges for a few that can't resist typing in the chat or talking, so we are asking for your support.

    Holly Grove Elementary Parents/Guardians,

Thank you for a great start to the new school year! We sincerely appreciate your patience, understanding, and continued support.

    Release of Student Information

We understand that the village is banding together to help our students this upcoming year. We appreciate all the daycare providers, Nannies, extended family members, and others who will be assisting students with remote learning. In these cases, please proceed forward with sharing your child(ren) information with those individuals, if you so choose. Our teachers will not be permitted to share their information with a third-party. We will only share information with those you have designated during your initial registration to WCPSS or formally updated request to our Data Manager- Mrs. Stomp.

    Chromebook and Hotspot Distribution

WCPSS is actively distributing devices to those that requested them. WCPSS Technology Services is sending out emails with pick up times/locations. If you have not received one, please monitor your email accounts in the coming weeks. The number of requests made after the initial survey period combined with the available supply has understandably created many challenges to distribution. Teachers and staff will work with students and families that do not have access to technology in the coming weeks.

    Technology Distribution Centers:

    • Apex High
    • Enloe High
    • Knightdale High
    • Leesville Road High
    • South Garner High

To accommodate social distancing and to keep families, staff, and volunteers safe, families have been assigned a date to collect their requested devices. They will be allowed to pick up their devices from any location on or after their assigned date.

    Distribution Centers will operate:

    • Monday, Tuesday, Friday - 9 a.m. to 4 p.m.
    • Wednesday and Thursday - 8 a.m. to 8 p.m.
    • Saturdays - 9 a.m. to 1 p.m.

All devices will be inspected and tested before being distributed. Help Desk members will be on hand to answer questions, repair or replace devices that aren’t working, help families log into their devices, and address any problems with a previously distributed device.

    Translation services will be available.

    * Please note that our school is not one of the pickup sites and will not notify you when your device is ready.

    Holly Grove Elementary Parents/Guardians,

Thank you for a great start to the new school year! We sincerely appreciate your patience, understanding, and continued support.

    Orientation Weeks (August 17th – 28th)

This is the last week of orientation activities before we begin our first full day of instruction on August 31st from 9:15 AM – 4:00 PM. We will continue to provide our students and families the opportunity to ease into the remote learning environment. During this time frame, teachers will conduct various activities to get both students/families acclimated i.e. Meet & Greet, Open House, Technology Guidance, Morning Meetings, and other activities to create a foundation for learning and community. More information will be provided by your student’s classroom teacher.

    Release of Student Information

We understand that the village is banding together to help our students this upcoming year. We appreciate all the daycare providers, Nannies, extended family members and others who will be assisting students with remote learning.

We recognize that several of our families are still waiting for Chromebooks and/or hotspots from WCPSS. The district is distributing over 44,000 devices, which obviously is a huge undertaking. If you responded to the WCPSS survey or notified us, you will receive an email or text message 3 days prior to your scheduled pickup day that will provide specific details for the pickup. WCPSS Technology Services will make contact with all families to arrange a pickup date for a device. They have began distributing laptops and hotspots to families who requested them from five distribution centers:

Help Desk members will be on hand to answer questions, repair or replace devices that aren’t working, help families log into their devices and address any problems with a previously distributed device.

    Translation services will be available.

    * Please note that our school is not one of the pickup sites and will not notify you when your device is ready.

    Distribution of Materials

It’s time for collecting our back-to-school materials! To help this run as smoothly as possible, we are asking our families to follow these guidelines for pick-up:

    • Enter through the main entrance, off of Avent Ferry Rd., and use the carpool loop
    • Please stay in your vehicle
    • Have the back seat or trunk cleared for teachers to place materials in
    • Teachers will distribute the materials with as little contact as possible (similar to curb-side pickup)
    • You do not need to identify the student’s name, as all the bags are the same **(kindergarten parents see below)
    • Grade level teachers will be distributing as much as possible, so feel free to introduce yourself and say “Hi”!

All students (including Virtual Academy & Plan B) will receive materials to support learning from a distance. Items included: some basic starter school supplies, curriculum workbooks/resources, manipulatives, and other items that will support activities/instruction during virtual learning.

**Kindergarten parents only: When picking up school supplies please write your child's name visibly on a large piece of paper and display in the front windshield when approaching the school. We will be handing out bags with information specific to your child and will be matching bags to names.

Virtual Academy News (Mrs. Fricke - lfricke@wcpss.net )

We hope that if you are signed up for Virtual Academy that you have been able to participate in orientation activities with your Virtual Academy teachers. They have worked hard to provide activities to orient students to the class and online learning. Some students have yet to receive computers, and the first two weeks of orientation should allow most students to get "up to speed."  If you experience problems with technology, please reach out to Ms. Starkey at jstarkey@wcpss.net and to Ms. Fricke with questions or concerns about Virtual Academy. WCPSS is currently distributing devices to those that requested them. Emails are being sent out with pick up times and if you have not received one, please monitor your email accounts in the coming week. If you did not sign up for a device and have found that your child's device or internet is not sufficient, please let us know so that your name can be added to the County's list for devices/hotspots.

    Health News (Mrs. Fricke - lfricke@wcpss.net )

Due to COVID-19 visitors will not be allowed in the school building and grounds. If you need to contact someone in the office or a teacher, please call or email. The front office number is 919-577-1700. We have procedures in place for staff and as we get closer to opening the building, we will have additional precautions for students. Continue to enforce the 3 W's (Wear, Wait, and Wash) at home and help us educate children about the importance of health safety.

Extension Granted for Student Immunization and Health Assessments

A new Executive Order issued this past Wednesday by Governor Roy Cooper suspends but does not waive documentation deadlines for proof-of-immunization and health assessment requirements for school. In typical years, proof of required immunizations and health assessments were required within 30 days of the first date of attendance of school. After the 30 days, children are to be excluded from school until the family provides documentation of requirements. All immunization requirements and health assessments are now due by September 30th, 2020. Students will be granted a 30-day grace period which expires on October 30th, 2020.
