    Holly Grove Elementary Parents/Guardians,

I hope you’ve had a wonderful weekend! Please see the updates below so that you can plan accordingly.

    Return to School Updates

By now I am sure you have heard about Governor Cooper’s announcement that North Carolina Elementary schools may return to in-person instruction should school districts choose to do so. The WCPSS Board of Education has already scheduled a meeting for next Tuesday to further the discussion about returning to schools and will now have more options available to consider. While the full plan for the return to in-person instruction has not yet been decided, we will share information with you as soon as we get any additional details.

    Parent/Guardian Survey Results

Thank you for your participation in the parent/guardian survey. We had 616

responses, which represents 67% of our students. See key takeaways below -

    • 616 parent/guardian responses
    • Almost equivalent responses from each grade level
    • Most feel that the amount of time that their child is asked to engage in live learning is about right.
    • Most feel that the amount of assignments given is about right.
    • Most feel that the amount of time that it is taking for their child to complete their assignments is about right.
    • Many are favorable for keeping the schedule as is.
      • If adjustments are made the following areas were suggested -
        • Specials
        • AM/PM (shorter day)
        • Reducing live instruction / less screen time
    • The best thing about this year so far...the TEACHERS! ❤️
    • Areas of frustration -
      • Technology
      • Not being in school
      • Too many breaks
      • Family scheduling (daycare, babysitter, working families)
      • Time management/communication

    Parent Survey Results Graphs

Thanks as well for sharing your comments with us about something that was working well, and what was causing you the most frustration. These comments were collected anonymously, and have been shared with each grade level team to review. I have also shared the overall results with WCPSS district leadership. While there are some things certainly out of our control at the school level, we will look for how we can respond to your concerns and better support your children.

    Family Academy Survey

Please complete the simple survey below so that we can schedule information sessions of interest for our families here at Holly Grove Elementary.

Virtual Academy News (Mrs. Fricke - lfricke@wcpss.net )

We hope that your experience in Virtual Academy and remote learning is going well. It is important to note that the WCPSS Virtual Academy will continue to operate through the 2020-2021 school year regardless of which return to in-person scenario is selected.

At this time, students who are currently enrolled in the WCPSS Virtual Academy should remain in the academy for the duration of the fall semester. More information will be provided as decisions are made at the district level regarding requests to switch to Plan B (In person) at the semester end.

If you experience problems with technology, please reach out to Ms. Starkey at jstarkey@wcpss.net and if you have questions about Virtual Academy in general please contact Ms. Fricke at lfricke@wcpss.net

If you haven’t taken the survey, please do so by tomorrow Monday, September 14th at 12:00 PM. We will use the information from the survey to see what is working well for you, as well as where we might be able to improve some things currently in place.

Remember, if you have a child in more than one grade level at our school, we would appreciate it if you could complete the survey for each child, as we are collecting the data by grade level.

Virtual Academy News (Mrs. Fricke - lfricke@wcpss.net )

We hope that your experience in Virtual Academy and remote learning is going well. Teachers are also learning technology and we appreciate your patience if things do not always go as planned. It can be very stressful to try something with students for the first time, however, the more times it is attempted the better it gets for everyone. Please continue to remind students not to use the chat feature unless directed by the teacher and to mute themselves unless directed to unmute by the teacher. This is particularly important in Specials when there are many children present. Your child's teacher may reach out to you if your child is having problems adhering to "Google Meet" rules.

If you experience problems with technology, please reach out to Ms. Starkey at jstarkey@wcpss.net and if you have questions about Virtual Academy in general please contact Ms. Fricke at lfricke@wcpss.net

    Technology Update

WCPSS is continuing to distribute devices to those that requested them. Emails are being sent out to those that completed the technology survey or have submitted his/her name to request a device. Teachers and staff will work with students and families that do not have access to technology in the coming weeks. We appreciate your support and patience as we navigate technology concerns together.

    Holly Grove Elementary Parents/Guardians,

We did it! We’ve made it through the first full week of instruction. Thank you for your continued support as we navigate the challenges of remote learning. Your patience and understanding are greatly appreciated. Our teachers have shared how nice it was to see and work with students again! We have also heard from both teachers and parents about the challenges you have had to deal with this week, and we know that this is a huge adjustment for all of us. Thank you for continuing to be patient with teachers as we learn how to best provide appropriate online instruction and assignments, and we promise to be patient with you for the challenges that you may face in implementing virtual learning.

    Labor Day Holiday

Just a reminder that schools are closed on Monday, September 7th in observance of the Labor Day holiday. Students are not expected to log in, and no live instruction will be taking place on that day. I hope you get to “unplug” that day and enjoy some relaxing time with your family!

Important: Delay in Chromebook and Hotspot Distribution

There has been a delay in the shipment of devices from the supplier.  WCPSS Technology Services is inviting parents that have received emails and have not picked up devices at this point to pick up requested devices on Tuesday, September 8th or Friday, September 11th at one of the following locations:

    • Apex High School - 1501 Laura Duncan Rd, Apex
    • Enloe High School - 128 Clarendon Crescent, Raleigh
    • Knightdale High School - 100 Bryan Chalk Lane, Knightdale

Specials Update: Effective Tuesday, September 8th

Thank you so much for your family’s amazing support this week as we all navigate this new challenge. We recognize that we are learning as we go and we are taking you feedback and making adjustments as best we can.

To make it easier for all to access specials each day we will make a change. As of Tuesday, September 8th we will be using the Google Classroom generated meet code that can be accessed in each specialist’s Google Classroom Banner. We hope this will make it easier and help your child become more independent. Please be sure your child is connected to the Classrooms of all specialists prior to class next week.

You can find the Google Classroom Codes for all specials here: https://docs.google.com/document/d/16z99lQfI6Gah8HvzDFIl6oAWXZ0NosBh3Ss1fPXmA18/edit?usp=sharing

Virtual Academy News (Mrs. Fricke - lfricke@wcpss.net )

We hope that if you have been experiencing challenges with online learning that those issues have improved! All teachers have been working hard to meet the academic needs of students as well as solving technology concerns. Please remind students not to use the chat feature unless directed by the teacher and to mute themselves unless directed to unmute by the teacher. These two simple tasks are challenges for a few that can't resist typing in the chat or talking, so we are asking for your support.

    Holly Grove Elementary Parents/Guardians,

Thank you for a great start to the new school year! We sincerely appreciate your patience, understanding, and continued support.

    Release of Student Information

We understand that the village is banding together to help our students this upcoming year. We appreciate all the daycare providers, Nannies, extended family members, and others who will be assisting students with remote learning. In these cases, please proceed forward with sharing your child(ren) information with those individuals, if you so choose. Our teachers will not be permitted to share their information with a third-party. We will only share information with those you have designated during your initial registration to WCPSS or formally updated request to our Data Manager- Mrs. Stomp.

    Chromebook and Hotspot Distribution

WCPSS is actively distributing devices to those that requested them. WCPSS Technology Services is sending out emails with pick up times/locations. If you have not received one, please monitor your email accounts in the coming weeks. The number of requests made after the initial survey period combined with the available supply has understandably created many challenges to distribution. Teachers and staff will work with students and families that do not have access to technology in the coming weeks.

    Technology Distribution Centers:

    • Apex High
    • Enloe High
    • Knightdale High
    • Leesville Road High
    • South Garner High

To accommodate social distancing and to keep families, staff, and volunteers safe, families have been assigned a date to collect their requested devices. They will be allowed to pick up their devices from any location on or after their assigned date.

    Distribution Centers will operate:

    • Monday, Tuesday, Friday - 9 a.m. to 4 p.m.
    • Wednesday and Thursday - 8 a.m. to 8 p.m.
    • Saturdays - 9 a.m. to 1 p.m.

All devices will be inspected and tested before being distributed. Help Desk members will be on hand to answer questions, repair or replace devices that aren’t working, help families log into their devices, and address any problems with a previously distributed device.

    Translation services will be available.

    * Please note that our school is not one of the pickup sites and will not notify you when your device is ready.

    Holly Grove Elementary Parents/Guardians,

Thank you for a great start to the new school year! We sincerely appreciate your patience, understanding, and continued support.

    Orientation Weeks (August 17th – 28th)

This is the last week of orientation activities before we begin our first full day of instruction on August 31st from 9:15 AM – 4:00 PM. We will continue to provide our students and families the opportunity to ease into the remote learning environment. During this time frame, teachers will conduct various activities to get both students/families acclimated i.e. Meet & Greet, Open House, Technology Guidance, Morning Meetings, and other activities to create a foundation for learning and community. More information will be provided by your student’s classroom teacher.

    Release of Student Information

We understand that the village is banding together to help our students this upcoming year. We appreciate all the daycare providers, Nannies, extended family members and others who will be assisting students with remote learning.

We recognize that several of our families are still waiting for Chromebooks and/or hotspots from WCPSS. The district is distributing over 44,000 devices, which obviously is a huge undertaking. If you responded to the WCPSS survey or notified us, you will receive an email or text message 3 days prior to your scheduled pickup day that will provide specific details for the pickup. WCPSS Technology Services will make contact with all families to arrange a pickup date for a device. They have began distributing laptops and hotspots to families who requested them from five distribution centers:

Help Desk members will be on hand to answer questions, repair or replace devices that aren’t working, help families log into their devices and address any problems with a previously distributed device.

    Translation services will be available.

    * Please note that our school is not one of the pickup sites and will not notify you when your device is ready.

    Distribution of Materials

It’s time for collecting our back-to-school materials! To help this run as smoothly as possible, we are asking our families to follow these guidelines for pick-up:

    • Enter through the main entrance, off of Avent Ferry Rd., and use the carpool loop
    • Please stay in your vehicle
    • Have the back seat or trunk cleared for teachers to place materials in
    • Teachers will distribute the materials with as little contact as possible (similar to curb-side pickup)
    • You do not need to identify the student’s name, as all the bags are the same **(kindergarten parents see below)
    • Grade level teachers will be distributing as much as possible, so feel free to introduce yourself and say “Hi”!

All students (including Virtual Academy & Plan B) will receive materials to support learning from a distance. Items included: some basic starter school supplies, curriculum workbooks/resources, manipulatives, and other items that will support activities/instruction during virtual learning.

**Kindergarten parents only: When picking up school supplies please write your child's name visibly on a large piece of paper and display in the front windshield when approaching the school. We will be handing out bags with information specific to your child and will be matching bags to names.

Virtual Academy News (Mrs. Fricke - lfricke@wcpss.net )

We hope that if you are signed up for Virtual Academy that you have been able to participate in orientation activities with your Virtual Academy teachers. They have worked hard to provide activities to orient students to the class and online learning. Some students have yet to receive computers, and the first two weeks of orientation should allow most students to get "up to speed."  If you experience problems with technology, please reach out to Ms. Starkey at jstarkey@wcpss.net and to Ms. Fricke with questions or concerns about Virtual Academy. WCPSS is currently distributing devices to those that requested them. Emails are being sent out with pick up times and if you have not received one, please monitor your email accounts in the coming week. If you did not sign up for a device and have found that your child's device or internet is not sufficient, please let us know so that your name can be added to the County's list for devices/hotspots.

    Holly Grove Elementary Parents/Guardians,

It’s official….Welcome to the 2020 – 2021 school year! We are excited to embrace this new educational experience. Our teachers have been working extremely hard to completely revamp the way we have traditionally done school. The next two weeks of orientation we will be taking things slow to get everyone acclimated to remote learning. Thank you in advance for your patience, understanding, and continued support.

    Orientation Weeks (August 17th – 28th)

WCPSS has deemed the first two weeks for orientation. This will provide our students and families the opportunity to ease into the remote learning environment. During this time frame, teachers will conduct various activities to get both students/families acclimated i.e. Meet & Greet, Open House, Technology Guidance, Morning Meetings, and other activities to create a foundation for learning and community. More information will be provided by your student’s classroom teacher.

Remember: The first full day of instruction 9:15 AM – 4:00 PM will be on August 31st.

    Chromebook and Hotspot Distribution

WCPSS Technology Services will make contact with all families to arrange a pickup date for a device. They will begin distributing laptops and hotspots to families who requested them on August 17th from five distribution centers:

    Supply Lists

Supply lists are located on the Holly Grove ES website. Click on Parents → Back to School → Grade Level Supply Lists https://docs.google.com/document/d/1rSjkz-Kitld2OXXaMAXeYa3693FEU6n7UW0THmEmJBs/edit

PowerSchool - “I didn’t get a phone call from my teacher.”

PowerSchool is the managing system for schools, it contains ALL student information. WCPSS pulls all information from that system to communicate with families. If your contact information (phone number, address, email, etc.) has changed since enrolling your student to WCPSS, then please make sure that you contact Mrs. Stomp – HGES Data Manager with the updated/correct information cstomp@wcpss.net .

    Technology Survey

WCPSS Technology Services is asking that we confirm technology, whether there is a need or not. Please take a moment to confirm, even if you do not have any technological device needs. This will give us the foundation to plan and move forward accordingly. If you indicate that you are in need of technology, the HGES Tech Team will make a request on your behalf.

    Virtual Academy News

Welcome to the 2020-2021 school year! If you signed up for Virtual Academy for the Fall Semester or the Entire Year, you will receive the same instruction as those in Plan B Transition (remote.) At the end of the Semester, if you want to make a change to your Virtual Academy status, you will be given the opportunity to make your request known. Based on staffing and classroom space, we will make changes as we are able to accommodate them.

If you signed up for a device you will receive an email from WCPSS and be informed as to  when your device is available for pick up. Devices will be distributed at Apex, Enloe, Leesville Road, Knightdale, and South Garner High Schools. If you do not have a device please let your teacher know as soon as possible. WCPSS had 38,000 requests for additional devices for 2020-2021 and is working hard to meet the needs of WCPSS students.

If you have a device and have questions about technical use, please refer to the tech support guides at https://www.wcpss.net/techguides. The resources on this site show students how to log in to their Wake IDs, how to set up and use Chromebooks and Internet hotspots, how to connect to WiFi, how to use learning systems such as Google Classroom and much more. They will continue to add new resources and updates. Don't see something you need? Let us know! Feel free to email Ms. Starkey at jstarkey@wcpss.net. If you have questions about Virtual Academy in general, please email Ms. Fricke at lfricke@wcpss.net.

    Health News

We hope that your family is healthy and safe as we begin this new year. To help keep your family healthy and to help us prepare for the return to school we’d like to promote the 3 W’s – Wear, Wait, Wash (see below.)  Our staff members are following the 3 W's and have received training on various health topics. We have formed a Care Team. That team has received training on how to take temperatures and how to handle any Covid-19 related issues with students. When we return to school we will be prepared to work together to quickly respond to health concerns.

Until students return to school, the campus is closed to visitors. If you have questions or concerns, please contact your child's teacher or call the front desk for support at 919-577-1700.

Extension Granted for Student Immunization and Health Assessments

A new Executive Order issued this past Wednesday by Governor Roy Cooper suspends but does not waive documentation deadlines for proof-of-immunization and health assessment requirements for school. In typical years, proof of required immunizations and health assessments were required within 30 days of the first date of attendance of school. After the 30 days, children are to be excluded from school until the family provides documentation of requirements. All immunization requirements and health assessments are now due by September 30th, 2020. Students will be granted a 30-day grace period which expires on October 30th, 2020.

    Holly Grove Elementary Parents/Guardians,

I hope you all had a nice weekend. As we are nearing the beginning of the school year, I know that you are anxious for information. I hope the information below is helpful to you.

    Class Lists and Teacher Assignments

We received the information we needed on this past Friday to begin our work to create our class lists and teacher assignments. Our hope is to finalize this by early next week so teachers can start contacting parents by the end of the week to introduce themselves. Teachers will share specific information about their class.

As this year is so very different from our normal school opening, and we have a large portion of our students who will be attending the Virtual Academy, our scheduling will be impacted. Some of those impacts include:

    • Since we are all following the single track 4 modified schedule, no students are currently assigned to tracks. (When we return to a multi-track schedule, we are planning on assigning students who are enrolled at that time back to their previously assigned track.)
    • Students will be grouped and assigned to teachers and with other students this year that may not normally be on your track.
    • While we will make every effort to maintain consistency for your child this year, please know that some changes may be necessary based on enrollment numbers, parents opting in/out of the Virtual Academy at mid-year, class size legislation, and other factors.
    • As is true every year, we are allotted teachers based on enrollment. After our 10-day headcount is completed, we could gain or lose teachers based on actual enrollment (not projections) and some classes may have to be reconfigured.

    School Supplies

Supply lists will be added to our website this week and sent in my weekly email this upcoming week. In addition, WCPSS and Holly Grove ES has purchased some supplies to be distributed to students. We will be providing you with dates and times for a “drive through” event to distribute those supplies once they arrive on campus. More information will be provided to you soon.

    Chromebook and Hotspot Distribution

WCPSS Technology Services will begin distributing laptops and hotspots to families who requested them on August 17th from five distribution centers:

Help Desk members will be on hand to answer questions, repair or replace devices that aren’t working, help families log into their devices and address any problems with a previously distributed device.

    Translation services will be available.

    * Please note that our school is not one of the pickup sites.

    Orientation to Virtual Learning

As the district has shared with you, the first two weeks of school will include opportunities for teachers and families to connect, as well as for students to connect with each other. Teachers will use this time to share schedules, set procedures and routines, and ensure every student knows how to access assignments and materials. Teachers will provide a good foundation to maximize your child’s ability to engage appropriately with each other and their work during this time.

    Academic Work

You can expect academic work to begin on August 31st. Please know that there will be much higher expectations in place for students than in place during the quick transition to remote learning at the end of last school year. Work will focus on covering standards the students missed at the end of last year, as well as new material for their current grade level. Attendance will be taken and grades will be given. However, as we know that this type of learning is new for us, we will implement it in a way that will allow our students to grow into these new ways.

    Virtual Academy News

If you signed up for Virtual Academy for the Semester/Fall or the Full year, you should have received an email with a confirmation letter this past Monday evening. We will update you with information as we receive it, and we hope to provide a smooth transition for you and your family. If you have questions or concerns about Virtual Academy, please email lfricke@wcpss.net.

    Health News

WCPSS has established COVID-19 Coordinators at each school to aid in keeping employees safe and in making preparations for on-site learning to take place. During workdays, staff members have had health screenings before entry (temperature, screening questions, mask requirement put in place) followed social distancing protocols, read posted signs for information, adhered to limited entry and exit points, used sanitizer, adhered to reduced occupancy requirements in rooms, attended meetings in a virtual format or in small groups, and received health training. Nurse Hare, our school nurse, has also been on site to offer guidance. We are taking guidelines seriously and will continue to put things in place to help keep everyone safe!

No Extensions to Student Immunization and Health Assessment Requirements

As of now, state lawmakers have not made any adjustments or exceptions to the immunization and health assessment requirements for students enrolled for face-to-face instruction or for the Virtual Academy. This includes requirements for our rising Kindergarteners and any student newly enrolled from out-of-state, please click the link for more information.

High Expectations for our Hedgie’s in 2020-2021!

This year will be different than any other year. However, that does not mean it has to be less than any other year in terms of our children’s academic or social growth. Our teachers have been working hard this week and will continue to do so next week. We’re going to be ready to support you and your children to have a fantastic school year.

     Holly Grove Elementary Parents/Guardians,

I hope you all had a nice weekend. There is no new information to be shared but I did want to share some of the questions that our Holly Grove parent/guardians have asked, see below.

If I sign up for the fall only but want to continue with the VA, can I?

Students enrolled for the Fall only will have the option to apply to continue in the WCPSS Virtual Academy in the Spring.  The application window will be in late October or early November. Students enrolled for the Fall will be granted priority to continue in the Spring. Seats for new applicants are not guaranteed in the Spring.

When will I know who my child’s teacher will be?

This cannot be decided until we receive the assignment by the district into the 3 cohorts of students. Once we have that information at the school level we can proceed with assignments.

How will this year affect my track assignment?

All students at this time have been moved to the single track 4 modified schedule. Because we have students across all tracks making different decisions, track assignments will mean little in terms of classroom placement this year (for either the VA or returning under plans A/B/C). However, we have not moved anyone from their currently assigned track, so when we return to a multi-track schedule, we plan on moving families back to their currently assigned track.

Will we be on Track 4 schedule the remainder of the school year?

We do not know that for sure at this time. That decision will be made later as officials determine the safety of bringing all students back to school on plan A, and the room available in the school.

How many students at Holly Grove ES are signed up for the Virtual Academy?

I am providing some information below as of July 31st.
