First In Fitness 2018

What Is FIF?

  • “First in Fitness” is a 6th grade only event. It was established by a former elementary physical education teacher, Ben Tench and is one of the oldest on-going physical fitness events in the country. Over 50 elementary schools and 20 middle schools will be sending teams of students to compete in a variety of fitness events including the mile run, pull-ups, one-minute jump rope, shuttle run, long jump, 100-yard dash, a modified triathlon, and other track and field events.

Who Participates?

  • During the first semester, students will qualify for the First in Fitness squad. Not all students will be able to participate in the First in Fitness competition, but all students will be given the opportunity to be on the First in Fitness squad.

    Once selected, students will be notified and given more information on First in Fitness participation.

FIF Location Details

  • Date: March 16, 2018

    Rain Date: March 22, 2018

    Location: Southeast Raleigh High School

    • 9:00 am - Schools arrive to the FIF site
    • 9:30 am - Opening Ceremonies and Start of First In Fitness

    **Important** If your child is tracked out, they are allowed to ride the school bus to and from school. All students will ride our activity bus to the event. If your child does not take the bus to school, it is important that he/she arrives at Durant between 8am-8:10am as we are leaving Durant promptly at 8:15am. If your child will be meeting us at Southeast Raleigh High School (2600 Rock Quarry Rd, Raleigh, NC 27610) please let Miss Cicco or Mr. Jones know ahead of time and ensure they are there by 9:00am to check in.

First in Fitness Events (tentative schedule) *Triathlon will be mixed in throughout

    • Pull-ups (overhand grip, chin above bar) 
    • Shuttle Run (one attempt, knock blocks over) 
    • Mile Run 
    • Triathlon (pull-ups, shuttle run, mile run)
    • 400 meter
    • 800 meter
    • Long Jump (3 attempts)
    • 4 x 100 Relay (team event) 

FIF Student Attire

  • Please make sure that your child is dressed in proper attire for participating in physical activity.  Students will be given team shirts on the day of First in Fitness.  Proper attire includes: appropriate school t-shirts, tennis shoes, socks, shorts (weather appropriate attire) 


    Students need to wear regular rubber sole athletic shoes for their events.  Students may not wear flip flops or Croc type footwear.

Suggestions of things to bring:

    • Water bottles
    • Sunglasses- Sunscreen-Hat
    • Cell phone- Emergency phone numbers for your child
    • Medication needed by your child (Inhalers, allergy medicine)
    • Lunch/Snacks
    • Blanket/Towel for child to sit on in between events

    Please do not bring anything that could be lost or stolen.  Keep valuables out of site unless otherwise needed.

FIF practices will be held on the following days:

  • Practice Dates: Wednesdays: February 21st, February 28th, March 7th, March 14th

    *Rides should be picked up in the bus lot.

    **If needed, students can ride one of two activity buses after practice that leaves Durant at 5:30pm. The activity buses make select stops.  Click here to view those stops 

    The FIF practices are extremely important due to the fact that our FIF athletes are on different tracks and need the time to prepare together.  Please provide transportation and pick your child up at the bus lot.

2017 First in Fitness Recap

  • On Tuesday, March 21, 2017, our 6th Grade First in Fitness team competed at Pine Hollow Middle School and finished in the top 5 out of 23 schools!

    Congratulations to: Aytana Anthony, Taylor Brown, Kiera Cox, Jhania Vitalis, Caroline Ishman, Carter Lemelin, Nathan Brinkman, Kweku Agyen, Dylan Tobias, and Edwin Fuentes.

    The following 6th graders placed in their events earning Durant the top 5 finish:

    Jaleel Vick – 3rd place in the 400 Meter Run (1 lap)
    Camarria Thomas - 3rd place in the Shuttle Run
    Ty Broughton - 3rd place in the 800 Meter Run (2 laps)
    Vanessa Baker - 5th place in the 400 Meter Run (1 lap)
    Noah Towles - 6th place in the triathlon (Shuttle Run, Pull-Ups, Mile)

    The final event of for the day was the girls and boys 4x100 relay. The boys team took 1st place and the girls team took 3rd place.
