Feb. 9, 2021 - Athletics Updates Regarding Spectators, Face Coverings and Middle School Activities

  • Here are some important updates regarding athletics as students prepare to return to campus.

    Spectators (REVISED MARCH 1)

In alignment with Executive Order No. 195, indoor and outdoor high school athletics facilities may now allow spectators up to 30 percent of capacity while ensuring that all groups maintain at least six feet of social distancing. Learn more.

    Face coverings

In consultation with medical and public health guidance, WCPSS has determined that, under the current pandemic conditions, it is critical that all student-athletes wear face coverings at all times when engaging in practice or competitions. Appropriate arrangements will be made for mask breaks away from others as necessary, but athletes may not remove their face coverings during competition.

Requests for disability-related accommodations may be submitted to the school principal and will be considered on a case-by-case basis. WCPSS will continue to provide reasonable accommodations that do not pose a threat to the health or safety of others to the extent required by law. However, at this time WCPSS has determined that student-athletes who do not wear a face covering during indoor activities, or who do not wear one during outdoor activities where there is close contact between student-athletes, pose a threat to the safety of others and therefore cannot be permitted.

    Middle School Athletics

As previously announced, any interested middle school student-athletes will have the opportunity to participate in skill development, conditioning workouts and, for some sports, intramural competitions beginning in the second semester. There will not be inter-school competitions.

Due to the delay in return to in-person instruction on campus sites, there is a new schedule for athletic activity. It was not possible for every season to be the same duration due to the compressed timetable.
