• Woo Hoo! We've made it through week #3!

We are settled into the school year and excited about our Fall Family Picnic next week Wednesday September 20thfrom 5-7 pm. PTA has organized multiple food trucks (Kona IceWicked Links, and Taco Grandeso you have lots of dinner options. We encourage you to bring the whole family, as well as blankets and chairs for your picnic. We look forward to seeing you and spending time together as a school family!

POSITIVITY PROJECT: This coming week we will be diving into the character strength of curiosity. Be sure to ask your child what curiosity means as well as continue to remind them how #OtherPeopleMatter.

AIG: If you are interested in nominating your fourth through fifth grade child for the Academically or Intellectually Gifted Program, you may nominate your child all year. Testing for fourth through fifth grade students takes place twice during the school year, and the fall testing window opens the week of October 9th. Nominations must be in no later than 3:00 on Friday, September 29th to be reviewed by the school-based committee. To nominate your child or for more information, please contact York’s AIG teacher, Ms. Russo, at drusso@wcpss.net .

Growth: DPI released school performance last Thursday, and we are excited to share that York exceeded growth; this means that the majority of our students demonstrated at least one year of growth as measured by state assessments. If you are interested in knowing more about this measure, DPI provides a wealth of information.

Reading: This is the time of year when parents wonder how they can best support their students at home, and it is by reading with your student(s). Research shows us that 20 minutes a day is the magic number to improve an individual’s academic performance. We ask that you work hard to find 20 minutes each day to read with your child, to read alongside your child, or to ensure your child is reading.

    Volunteers Needed!

Artist Leni Newell will be coming to York in November as the 5th grade Cultural Arts Artist-in-Residence. 5th grade students, working with Ms. Newell, will create 5 large banners to be displayed at York in the Media Center.  Ms. Newell has asked for adult volunteers to assist with this project.  Project dates are set over 5 school days - Monday, November 6th -Thursday, November 9th and Monday, November 13th , 2017. Volunteers are needed for 1.5 hour blocks.  Please email Ann Goldfinch (ahhughes@nc.rr.com) if you are available to help.  This volunteer opportunity is open to parents of all grade levels - not just 5thgrade!

SHOUT OUT OUR STAFF: We are starting something new that will help build even more positivity and climate for our staff here at YES. On our school website is a link where you can “Shout Out” a staff member. We don’t always get to know how a staff member has helped you or your child, but we want to know. Each month when we get together as a staff, we will share the shout outs you have submitted. Let’s keep the positivity going - #OtherPeopleMatter

PTA: If you have not yet joined the York PTA, I encourage you to visit their website and join PTA through the York PTA MemberHubOur PTA does an outstanding job supporting our students and staff through school-wide events and programming. Join us for the general assembly meeting during Open House on Thursday, September 14th to learn more as well as sign up to volunteer, join PTA/MemberHub, and be a part of the best school around!
