December 6, 2024 (track 1 tracks out, carpool reminders, volunteers 6thgrade field trip, athletics, AIG nomination)

Hello Patriot Families!

Track 1 has made it to track out!!!  Woo-hoo!!!  I hope you enjoy your track out.  We will see you back on Monday, January 6!  Enjoy your holidays!  Tracks 3 and 4 are here through December 20 before their winter break.

We had a busy week this past week!  Love all the great things going here at HMS that are student-centered!

  • We recognized and celebrated students who entered and/or are moving on with the Reflections art program (we have some really artistic students!)
  • Some CTE elective courses had a hands-on coding experience during 6th-grade electives
  • 6th-grade had a cultural arts performance (thanks to our PTA) where the performer was a storyteller of Greek Mythology, alignment to their curriculum
  • ALL students participated in a spelling test and the top 20 students were announced yesterday to move on to our school spelling bee on January 23
  • We recognized and celebrated students in a character education breakfast for the traits of courage and kindness!

Next week:

  • Monday, December 9: Home basketball game
  • Wednesday, December 11: We are hosting 2 open houses for any families that may be considering HMS for next year.  If you have neighbors that are at other WCPSS schools that are considering putting in a transfer or at a charter or private school but want to see what HMS has to offer, please encourage them to sign up for an open house and tour of the building.  We will have two options; Wednesday, December 11, 9:30 - 10:30 a.m. | Wednesday, December 11, 6:00 - 7:00 p.m. | RSVP to Open House | Schedule a Tour .  Thank you for spreading the word about our wonderful school!
  • Friday, December 13: Cheerleading competition at Millbrook HS!  Good luck HMS cheerleaders!

Carpool Reminders:

Kindly remember that the school building opens for students at 7:50 AM, providing them with access 30 minutes before the start of the school day. Additionally, to ensure a smooth and efficient carpool process in the morning, turn right when exiting the parking lot. Attempting to turn left can create traffic congestion and may pose a safety concern. Thank you for your cooperation!

6th-grade field trip: Volunteers needed!

We want to make sure to give each family who would like to volunteer an opportunity.  Here is more information but also know you must be a registered WCPSS volunteer.  More information about that here: https://www.wcpss.net/volunteer

AIG Nomination

The nomination period is open for all tracks. Parents may submit student nominations for gifted identification screening through December 13. This screening will determine if there is appropriate data to warrant a complete evaluation which may include standardized testing. If your student is not already identified and performing 1-2 grade levels above in reading or math, you may consider a nomination for evaluation screening. AIG Nomination Form.  Any questions, please reach out to Ann Worley, our AIG teacher, at aworley@wcpss.net.

Athletics

Monday, December 9 is our first home basketball game of the season against West Millbrook. The girls' basketball team will get things going first with tip-off at 4 pm. The boys' basketball game will start 10-20 minutes after the end of the girls' game. PTA will be selling concessions. Tickets can be purchased ahead of time on GoFan (https://gofan.co/app/school/NC68157

As always, any questions or concerns, please reach out.  I hope you have a wonderful weekend!

Yours,

Amy Light, Principal
