September 4, 2022 Mustang News
Good evening Mustang families. This is Marla Mondora, principal of Martin Gifted and Talented Magnet Middle School, with our family message, Mustang News. This is the last week I am sending this message 3 ways: phone, email and text. If you are not receiving this message 3 ways, log into https://www.wcpss.net/schoolmessenger to update your communication preferences. You will also want to check to see if you have inadvertently blocked messages coming from us in your email and phone settings. Moving forward, phone messages will be reserved for urgent communication needs.
Our first week was wonderful! Students and staff spent time getting to know each other and developing class norms and expectations. Thank you for partnering with us for a great start to the 2022-23 school year!
Labor Day: Martin and all WCPSS schools will be closed on Monday in observance of Labor Day. Enjoy the long weekend.
Meet the Teacher: Martin will welcome all families to campus for Meet the Teacher on Thursday, September 8th. The event starts with a PTA General Meeting at 5:30 in the Auditorium. Then, families will follow their student’s schedule to meet teachers and learn about each class. This week, please ask your student to share their schedule with you.
Carpool: Morning carpool is running smoothly and all families are through the line before the tardy bell rings! Please continue to come early enough to be through the line by 7:25. As a reminder for both morning and afternoon carpool, please do not ask your student to meet you on or across Horton Street. We have noticed students meeting their rides on Horton, creating an unsafe carpool.
Bus Transportation: We appreciate your patience as WCPSS and our contract vendors work to fill driver vacancies. For bus updates, families should visit wcpss.net - parents - transportation - bus/transportation updates. Select Martin from the list.
Substitute Appreciation Week: WCPSS is celebrating our Substitute Teachers this week through Substitute Appreciation Week. We are grateful for the work our substitutes do to ensure learning continues when a teacher is absent from school.
Art Club: 7th and 8th grade students are invited to join our Art Club. Ms. Bennett and Ms. Odum will hold an informational meeting on Tuesday, September 6th, from 2:15-3:00. Students will need to arrange for their transportation to pick them up in the bus loop at 3pm. For questions and application, see Ms. Bennett (room 3005) or Ms. Odum (room 3010).
Student Council: If you are interested in being part of the Martin Student council or running for elected office, please attend an interest meeting in Ms. Snider's room on Wednesday, September 7th in Ms. Snider's room from 2:30-3:15pm.
Fall Sports: Fall sports tryouts begin on Tuesday, September 6th. For questions, please contact John Basaldu at jbasaldu@wcpss.net.
Martin Family Coffees: We will host our first Family Coffee on September 16th at 8am in the Auditorium. A 6th Grade Coffee will be September 23rd at 8am in the Media Center.
Chromebooks: All students are asked to bring their school issued, charged Chromebook to school each day. If your student does not have a Chromebook, they can bring a personal laptop. Please know that the school cannot provide technical support for personal devices. Additionally, students are responsible for securing their personal devices.
On Time Attendance: Students are expected to be on time to all classes. Last week, students did a great job learning their schedules and paths to class. This week, on-time attendance will be monitored.
Engineering Day: Campbell University is hosting Engineering Day for middle school students on Saturday, October 29th, from 10-2. The QR code to register can be found here.
Thank you Mustangs, and have a wonderful week.
