Year-round Families: Welcome to the 2021-22 school year!
We are excited to welcome year-round calendar students on tracks 1, 2 and 3 back to school on July 8.
As the spread of COVID-19 has been reduced, we have been able to relax some health and safety protocols. However, some health guidelines will remain in effect, including the requirement to wear face coverings while using transportation and while indoors, except when eating or drinking.
Here is some more information about what to expect as many of our year-round students return to school buildings this week.
Teaching and Learning
Our students had many different experiences during the past year. Some students may feel some anxiety around their next step in learning. This is natural and common. Our teachers, counselors, principals, and other school staff members are prepared to support all students in rediscovering their strengths and building new ones. We encourage you to reach out to your child’s teacher or principal if you have questions or feedback regarding teaching and learning.
Safe Return to School Plan
Our top priority in all decisions is the health, safety, and well-being of our students, employees, and school communities. To minimize the spread of COVID-19, the district adheres to all COVID-19 health measures required by the NC Department of Health and Human Services and consults with Wake County Public Health to determine what precautions are needed in our schools to keep our students, staff, and community healthy in a safe and welcoming environment.
Social and Emotional Health Support Resources
In addition to the many services and supports that our schools offer with the help of school counselors, psychologists, social workers, and other specialists, these resources may help students and families to improve their health and wellness. School staff also are available to assist you with connecting with other programs and services.
Face Coverings
Due to current health guidelines, students, staff and visitors will be required to wear face coverings indoors on days that students are in school buildings, except while eating or drinking.
Face coverings also are required on school buses and vendor transportation.
Face coverings are optional for outdoor activities for everyone.
Updates Regarding Student Devices
All students will be assigned a student Chromebook at the beginning of the 2021-22 school year. If your student does not already have a Chromebook checked out, they will receive one at the beginning of the school year. For students with a Chromebook checked out, they may be required to return the Chromebook to receive a new one, or they may be required to continue using it, depending on the model. All hotspots that are checked out from last year must be returned to your student’s school as soon as possible. Families will have an opportunity to request a hotspot if one is needed at the beginning of the 2021-22 school year through the school’s social worker or SAP Coordinator.
School Meals
The US Department of Agriculture is allowing all schools to provide free meals to any student under 18 during the 2021-22 school year. This includes breakfast and lunch. Schools now may return to breakfast and lunch practices and procedures used before the pandemic, including allowing students to socialize while eating. While the district may be able to offer free meals to all students, it is very important for eligible parents to complete a meal benefits application because this data enables schools to obtain funding to provide other important educational resources to benefit students.
Transportation
Year-round calendar bus riders should have received an email today with detailed information about their bus routes. Contact transportation customer service or your school if you have questions. Download the Here Comes the Bus app to let you know when your bus will be arriving and if there is a substitute driver.
Student/Parent Handbook
This guide helps students and families understand the rules and expectations for behavior in school, on the way to and from school and during school-sponsored activities. Every student receives a hard copy at the beginning of the school year.
