The Martin Quiz Bowl team played in the State Tournament at Greensboro Page HS yesterday and won their first six games to advance to the championship match, before falling to Smith Middle School in a hard-fought final.   

 

To reach the championship, the team started by defeating Ligon, Chaloner, Nash Central and Grey Stone Day schools. Then, four hours into a long day, students bested 4^th place Metrolina Scholars Academy from Charlotte in a single-question overtime. Finally, to advance to the final, the Mustangs came back from 60 down to beat 3^rd place Brown Summit on the last question!  

 

All eight players scored tossups for Martin over the course of 6.5 hours of the tournament. Abe H., Advait D., Arjun P. and Sam D. started for Martin and anchored the team in the playoff matches, while Rejoy R., Siddhesh Y., Angie M. and Shripad B. all filled in outstandingly throughout the day, and - along with Chanelle C. - constantly encouraged and supported the starters.  

 

They were truly inspiring in helping each other overcome adversity and maintain confidence and composure, which was essential in the team getting as far as they did in their first year.  

 

Congratulations go to Arjun P., who earned 1^st team All-State honors (one of four highest scoring middle school Quiz Bowlers in the state). His knowledge and quick recall anchored the team's stellar performance throughout the day and the season. 

 

 

We am incredibly proud of these amazing students for how successful they were. It is reflective of how much work they put in, both building their knowledge and being the best teammates they could be. 

 

We also wouldn't have gotten to the State tournament without the contributions of Sophia M., Srinika S., Titus J., Addison A., Owen B. who all made huge contributions throughout the season.
