Specials and Enrichment at the Lake!

    Art, Music and Physical Education:

At LMES, we offer three standard specials to every grade level: art, music, and physical education.  Students will experience each of these subjects with a certified specialist for 45 minutes, once per week.  Each grade level will have an evening music program, and Super Kids day is an outdoor physical fitness event we celebrate as well.  A typical music class may consist of instruments, singing, composing, creating, and/or improvising.

Lake Myra's Physical Education program aligns with National Standards and goals and objectives, as per the framework (CMAPP) provided by Wake County Public School System. These objectives encompass the cognitive, affective, and motor domains, and activities are designed to enhance each student's physical, mental, social, and emotional development. Safety is always a priority; great care is taken to present lessons that promote a safe, fun, active learning environment! Physical fitness activities are incorporated in daily lessons and instruction includes movement exploration, sport skill development, and lead-up games/activities. Whenever possible, an interdisciplinary approach is presented, in attempt to support other academic areas, such as math, language arts, social studies, science, art, and music. Participation in tasks promote working individually, with partners, and/or as a member of a team. Competition is minimalized, as each student is encouraged to improve upon his/her personal goals! So far this year, activities have focused on: spatial awareness, non-locomotor and locomotor movement skills, dance, cooperative games, and fitness. Students have been receptive to the activities; they are learning new skills, have improved in many areas, and most importantly, they are having fun!
Additionally, all students have a Leader in Me Movement and STEAM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts and Math) Special.

    Leader in Me Movement Special:

Research shows that physical activity activates the brain, improves cognitive function, and is correlated with improved academic performance.

In the special, students participate in cooperative activities, play games and complete tasks & challenges that allow them to be more active and a little louder than in the classroom. Often, Physical Education standards and skills are included in the lessons. Students demonstrate and practice the 7 Habits for Leadership, as well as reinforce the school-wide expectations for discussion. We also talk about winning and losing like leaders and other skills for successful play and interactions with peers.

At the end of each class, students reflect on the activity. We discuss “Glows and Grows” (strengths and areas that need some improvement).

STEAM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts and Math) Special:

    What is STEAM?

STEAM is the abbreviation for Science, Technology, Engineering, Art & Math. It’s an integrated approach to learning that encourages students to think more broadly about real-world problems.

    It helps students:

    • Ask questions
    • Connect the dots
    • Problem solve
    • Think creatively
    • Be innovative

Why are STEM & STEAM Important?

STEM jobs are expected to grow by 16% in the US between 2014 and 2024 compared to only 11% for other sectors. And right now, science & engineering careers earn more than double the income of the median job in the United States. At Lake Myra, we understand the important to intergrating these learning expereinces into our children's day. As Lake Myra, we strive to ensure our student leaders are effective communicators, collaborators, critical thinkers, and problem solvers!
