HES Book Week

Next week is our 2nd Annual HES Book Week and we have many exciting activities planned to promote a love of reading!

  • Virtual Storytime will continue at 7:30pm on Tuesday and Thursday in honor of Black History Month. Thank you to everyone who has taken time to be a guest reader and listener in storytime this month.

  • Monday, our PTA has sponsored Guest Author, Guadalupe Carolina Fonseca Jimenez to speak with all students.  She is the author of Lupita and Her Magical Dreams, and Lupita and the Magic of Mexico.  She has a passion for inspiring others, and believes that we can all live a wonderful life if we truly believe in ourselves.

  • Wednesday we will enjoy the Rhythms of the Latin World Cultural Arts performance.

  • Friday, we will celebrate Book Character Day!

Please review the fliers below for more information on the other fun events we have planned for each day within our classrooms. We hope you will participate in reading activities at home as well!

Single Subject Acceleration

***Please see the updated link for test requests

Single Subject Acceleration (SSA) is the practice of placing a student in a higher-grade level in one subject area. This type of acceleration is for the purpose of providing access to appropriately challenging learning opportunities in either math or English Language Arts.  Your child will be skipping an entire year’s worth of content and background knowledge.

Is your child a good candidate for SSA Testing?

*Is your child at the top of the class in math or reading?

*Your child will be taking classes with peers who are older. If your child qualifies for SSA, their schedule may not allow for them to attend specials, lunch, or recess with their assigned grade level. This means they will attend with an upper or lower grade level.

*Can your child begin or complete projects by themselves?

*Will your child be successful in the 5th grade when they are completing assignments on their own when they have a virtual teacher?

*Consider your child’s organizational skills and ability to focus.

*Consider your child’s social and emotional maturity.
