Minimizing Classroom Disruptions

We need your help! Our instructional staff and administration have become very concerned with the frequency of interruptions to instruction in the classroom caused by parents bringing items for their children. A lack of instructional time is always a concern for our staff as we look to help every student reach his/her full potential, and we are hoping you can help us in one significant way. Every day, we have many parents coming to school with water bottles, missing school supplies,  lunches, and more. Our office staff members have been frequently calling classrooms to ask teachers to send students to the office for these dropped-off items. Every call is a disruption to the critical instruction taking place in the classroom. Some parents have been dropping off items multiple times each week. Some classes have regularly dealt with multiple interruptions daily. Parents sending TalkingPoints messages or emails does not solve the problem because teachers are engaged in instruction and not able to check messages throughout the day.

Starting on Tuesday, October 15th, we will be doing everything possible to avoid interrupting instruction. If students forget their water bottle, they can use the water fountains throughout the school. If students forget their lunch, they can buy their lunch if parents have added money to their lunch accounts. It would help to mention this option to your children ahead of time. If parents have been in the habit of bringing hot meals regularly, they should consider special containers that are able to keep their children's meals warm until lunch. Although not ideal, parents may also drop off a lunch on a cart in the office before 10:30 AM. The lunch should be clearly labeled with the name of the student. Please join us in encouraging your children to let the teacher know if they ever find that they do not have a lunch at lunch time so that the teacher can make sure that they have a lunch or can buy lunch. If students forget materials, homework, or special items for themed days at home, they can bring the items to school the next day if appropriate.

We appreciate your support as we work together to support effective instruction for all our students and teachers. We hope you understand that our desire to solve this problem is about the cumulative effect of these interruptions. We cannot thank you enough for your support and patience as we look to ensure the best possible learning environment for our Scotts Ridge Sailors!
