Principal's Message - Week of August 26

Dear Bryan Road Elementary Families:

Save the Dates

Tuesday, August 27 is the first day of school for students.

Monday, September 2 is the Labor Day holiday. There will be no school for students and staff.

Carpool Tag Pickup

Did you miss the carpool tag pickup during Open House? Please come by the front office on Monday, August 26 from 9:00 am - 3:00 pm to get your tag.

Class Supply Lists

Please visit our website to find your child’s 2024-2025 supply list.

Kindergarten Placement and Staggered Entry

Each Kindergarten child will attend only one day of school during the first week of school, August 27-August 29. This allows for more individualized attention for each Kindergarten child and a smooth transition into school. Parents are invited to walk their child on their assigned day to the classroom at 9:15 am after our Grade 1-5 students have arrived.

Schedule for Kindergarten Students

  • Tuesday, August 27 - Students with last names A-I will attend.

  • Wednesday, August 28 - Students with last names J-R will attend.

  • Thursday, August 29 - Students with last names S-Z will attend.

  • Tuesday, September 3 - All Kindergarten students will begin attending school together.

Full-Day PreKindergarten Important Dates

Ms. Tracey Ashbaugh and Ms. Shameka Wilson are excited to welcome our full-day PreK students to a new school year. Please note these important dates for traditional calendar schools. Please contact Ms. Ashbaugh (tlashbaugh@wcpss.net) for additional information.

  • August 27-September 3: Home Visits and Family Orientation

  • September 4-5: Staggered Entry

  • September 6: First Day of School

Late Entry/Early Exit

Beginning on Tuesday, September 3, when students arrive after 9:15 am by personal vehicle, they must be checked in through the front office. The parent/caregiver must plan to park and walk inside with the student to complete the check in process.

Beginning on Tuesday, August 27, early check out ends at 3:00 pm. The parent/caregiver must be on the student’s approved check out list and bring a valid photo ID. If the parent/caregiver arrives after 3:00pm, the office staff will contact the teacher requesting that the student meet the parent/caregiver at the front door at dismissal time.

Lunch with Your Student

Beginning on Monday, September 16, parents/caregivers are welcome to join their students during their lunch block. The parent/caregiver will need to check in through the front office and wait there to meet the student. Lunch will take place at the picnic tables outside the cafeteria. At the end of the lunch period, the parent/caregiver should escort the student back to the front office. Sending a Talking Points message to the teacher would help in making sure the child knows to go to the front office when his/her class goes to lunch.

Forgot Your Lunch?

We appreciate parents/caregivers taking care of students who forgot to bring their lunch with them in the morning. Please make sure lunch boxes or restaurant meals are left at the front desk by 10:30 am. This will help to ensure teachers will know the meal is waiting and can direct students to go by the front office when classes go to the cafeteria. Sending a message through Talking Points to the teacher can help in notifying students.

Birthday Celebrations

We are happy to recognize important milestones for students. We also need to be mindful to maximize instructional time for everyone and honor cultural traditions of our families. Birthday celebrations will take place during your student’s class snack time. Please confirm the time with your child’s teacher and drop off your delivery prior to that snack time. Donations need to be limited to one store bought item for the number of students in the class (cupcakes, cookies, chips, or snack bars). Your child’s teacher can advise about any food allergies in the classroom. Please do not send sheet cakes, ice cream cakes, beverages, and/or treat bags. Thank you for providing special moments.

Serve as a Volunteer

We welcome parent and community volunteers to support our classrooms, special events, and field trips. All WCPSS parent and community volunteers are required to register through the MyVolunteer System (WCPSS volunteers).

Families who were approved to volunteer in the 2023-24 school year received an email on June 1 outlining the simple volunteer renewal process for the 2024-25 school year. We encourage all 2023-2024 approved volunteers to  renew their volunteer status during the renewal window, July 1-Oct. 1. Review details at wcpss.net/volunteers.

Here Comes the Bus

Here Comes the Bus translates GPS data into an easy-to-use customizable map that works on a computer, tablet or smartphone. This free bus tracking system app allows you to see where the bus is and how close it is to your stop.

Get started with Here Comes the Bus at https://herecomesthebus.com/parents/get-started/. You will need the district code (67500) and your student’s ID number to sign up. For your smartphone or tablet, download the Here Comes the Bus app from the App Store or Google Play.

Once activated, you can customize or edit features, including how the app will communicate with you and the size of the notification radius.

New Bus Delay Notification System

Starting this school year, parents of students who ride the bus can receive up-to-the-minute notifications via text and/or email when their child’s bus is delayed.

This new system uses SchoolMessenger. You will need to make sure you have permissions turned on to receive these notifications. These messages will be sent as soon as transportation staff learn of a disruption. The system is designed to more quickly notify parents so they can make alternate arrangements when necessary. There will also be a link on your school's website that will display bus delays, or you can visit wcpss.net/busupdates. To receive these messages, you will need to make sure you have given permission to receive text and/or email notifications via SchoolMessenger

This is the same system used for districtwide messaging, separate from TalkingPoints or other communications services.

If you receive the weekly district-wide message sent on Wednesdays, you should be able to receive bus notifications without taking any further action. If you do not receive those weekly messages, go to wcpss.net/schoolmessenger to learn how you can sign up to receive notifications.

Simplest option: Text YES to the number 67587. That should automatically allow you to begin receiving text notifications.
