As we continue to monitor morning and afternoon carpool, there are a few items that need to be revisited.  Once you are in a carpool lane, please stay in that lane.  Jumping lines will result in either a longer wait for you or will disrupt the dismissal process and make the wait longer for everyone.  Also, in the afternoon if you arrive after the gate is closed, please turn around and proceed to the office to check out your child-DO NOT OPEN THE GATE.  Once the gate is closed, the students in YMCA are playing on the playground, and we need to ensure their safety.  Thank you for your attention to these matters.

You can sign up for Here Comes the Bus at:

https://login.herecomesthebus.com/SignUp.aspx. You will need the district code and your student’s ID number to sign up. The WCPSS school code is 67500. For your smartphone or tablet, download the Here Comes the Bus app from the App Store or Google Play.

    How does it work?

With GPS (Global Positioning System) trackers now standard on most school buses, Here Comes the Bus translates that information into an easy to follow customizable map, which allows you to see where the bus is and how close it is to your home.

    News from the PTA

We will have a Spirit Night at Charlie Kabobs on August 31 from 4-9 pm.  15% of all proceeds will go back to HES PTA

The Great Hurricane Hustle (formerly known as the Fun Run) will be held in October.  An informational letter went home this week and more information will follow as we get closer to the events. If you would like to help there is a sign up on the PTA website at heritagepta.org

Our Book Fair, Family Night and Reading Fair were a huge success.  Thank You to everyone for making this a great event for HES!

We welcome back track 3 on Monday, August 21 and we wish track 2 a happy track out!

I want to thank everyone for following the morning and afternoon carpool procedures.  At this time of the year, all students need to be dropped off through carpool or by school bus.  The ONLY exceptions are:

    1. PreK Families
    2. Business in the office; such as, obtaining a carpool number, medication, etc.
    3. You are volunteering for PTA or in the classroom
    4. If you child has a project that is too large for him/her to carry on their own.

Here Comes the Bus APP...Coming Soon!

WCPSS families will soon be able to use the bus tracking app Here Comes the Bus.

Here Comes the Bus translates GPS data into an easy to use, customizable map that works on a computer, tablet, or smartphone. It allows you to see where the bus is and how close it is to your home.

We are planning to make the app available to families of year-round and modified calendar bus riders beginning on Tuesday, August 22.

    Parking Lot

I also want to make you aware of a few incidents regarding the parking lot.  I have had 2 staff members report damage to their cars dents/scratches.  If you accidentally hit a car in the parking lot, please come into the office and report it.  I know it is time consuming and may involve financial reimbursement, but It is the right thing to do!

    Eclipse Information and Safety

As you know the eclipse is on Monday, August 21 starting at 1:16 and ending at 4:06.  Students will be kept indoors from 1:00 until dismissal with the blinds closed.  Teachers have been given articles to read with their classes regarding eye safety during an eclipse.  The eclipse will still be in progress during dismissal.  We have been given instructions to read the following statement to the student prior to dismissal, "Looking directly at the sun, even when it is partially covered by the moon, can cause serious eye damage or blindness. NEVER look at a partial solar eclipse without proper eye protection. Safety is our top priority, let's all be safe."  Please reiterate safety precautions with your child(ren).

Track 4 students will track in on Monday, July 31.  Please be mindful that this is their first day of school, and carpool will be tricky for the first two weeks as everyone is learning the carpool procedures. We ask for your patience and kindness during the transition time for these families.  Also, remember to stay in your lane at all times during morning and afternoon carpool.

If you were approved as a volunteer last school year, it remains in effect until October 2017.  If you have not reapplied by October 31, 2017, then your name will be dropped off the list as an approved volunteer.

FYI...during the first 10 days of school for tracks 1/2/3 we had 157 student absences and 33 tardies.  See the WCPSS Student handbook for a list of excused absences.  Instructional time is precious and we want your child(ren) learning with us :)

The second week of school was fantastic!  Our new Kindergarten students are settling in very nicely!  Starting Monday, July 24 ALL students will need to be dropped off in carpool or ride the school bus.  I know this is a difficult step for some families, but the children are ready :)  There are many staff members stationed throughout the school building to assist students. The only exception to this is if your child has a project/class snack, etc. that is too large for them to carry on their own, Pre-K parents, PTA/parent volunteers, or need to visit the office for student medication/carpool tag, etc.  Also, if you would like to be a parent volunteer in the classroom, chaperone on a field trip, etc. please come into the media center to complete or renew your volunteer status.  It does not roll over from year to year.  Thanks!
