Greetings Powell Families!

National School Counselor Week: This week, 02/05/24 - 02/09/24 is National School Counselor Week.  We are very thankful for our amazing School Counselor, Mrs. Gina Montague.  By serving as a leader and an advocate collaborating with other stakeholders, school counselors promote equity, access to opportunities, and rigorous educational experiences for all students.  Mrs. Montague has a tremendous impact on our student’s success academically, socially, and behaviorally.  Mrs. Montague is always available to be there for students and staff.  She plays a key role supporting and advocating for students as she serves on our Intervention Team, School Improvement Team, Conscious Discipline Action Team, serves as our school 504 Plan Coordinator, and attends weekly grade level Professional Learning Communities (PLCs.) Thank you, Mrs. Montague, for all that you do for our school community.  We appreciate you!

Black History Month: February is Black History Month where we celebrate the contributions that African-Americans have made to American history in their struggles for freedom and equality and deepens our understanding of our Nation's history. Students will engage in activities throughout the month.

PTA Board Meeting: 2/06/24 at 7:30 PM

Schedule Change: As we begin our second semester we have switched the Monday & Friday schedule.  Previously, students did not attend Domains or Electives on Mondays.  This will be changing and moving to Fridays.  Our 2nd semester schedule will be: Domains & Electives on Monday - Thursday and K -2 Double Specials/ 3 - 5 Specials & Clubs on Fridays.

WCPSS Honors Chorus: Shout out to our Powell students who participated in the WCPSS Honors Chorus yesterday. It was an excellent performance. Thank you, Mrs. Rothra for your leadership and providing this opportunity for our students.

Science Olympiad Tournament: Good Luck to our Competitive Minds Domain. They will be participating in the WCPSS Science Olympiad on Saturday, 02/10/24.

PTA Krispy Kreme Fundraiser: The Powell PTA is kicking off a spirit "night" for the month of February. For every digital dozen sold, the Powell PTA receives 50% of the proceeds. These digital dozens can be used at over 370 locations across the U.S. Dough us a favor and order yours here.

A Visiting Artist Needs Your Help! Local artist, Leni Newell, will be visiting Powell the week of February 12-16.  She will be working with the fifth graders to create original fabric batiks.  We are in need of PARENT VOLUNTEERS to help out during the workshops.  Please sign up here, if you are willing and able to come help the kids with their creations.  We could use help from parents from any grade level, not just 5th.  Leni loves repeat volunteers, so don't hesitate to sign up for more than one slot if you are available.

We are also looking for NEWSPAPER DONATIONS for the project.  Please send newspapers to Ms. Ali between now and February 12. Thank you!

Yearbook: The deadline to purchase yearbook recognition ads was extended to this coming Tuesday. Still need to order your yearbook? You can place your order here.  Have yearbook questions? Email powellptayearbook@gmail.com

Career Day - We are excited for our students to participate in Career Day on Friday, 04/12/24. To have a successful career day, we will need lots of volunteers from many different careers. Please see the flier that came home this past week.  If you are interested in volunteering to be a speaker, please mark your calendar for the morning of 04/12/24.

Pre-K Enrollment for 2024-2025 School Year: Do you have a child who will be 4 years old by August 31, 2024 and is a Wake County resident?  If so, consider applying for Wake Pre-K through the Universal Application. The Wake Pre-K application allows consideration for free, safe, and fun Pre-K program options.

Participating programs include NC Pre-Kindergarten (NC Pre-K), WCPSS Title I, and Telamon Head Start.  To learn more, visit the Wake Pre-K Application Center.

Enrollment into the Wake County Public School System Title I Pre-K program is based on the academic need of the child. NC Pre-K and Head Start are prioritized for families with low incomes and other related eligibility requirements. When your application is processed, your child will be considered for the program that best matches your family based on the criteria.

Does that sound like it may benefit your child? Apply today!

Have a great  week!
