Greetings Powell Families,

 

I hope that each of you have had a fun and restful summer.  It was great seeing everyone who attended our Meet the Teacher event on Thursday evening.  Each week on Sunday afternoon, you will receive a weekly email with lots of reminders.  Please refer to this email to keep in the know of the many events happening at Powell.  You will also receive a text message with a link to the Principal Message on our school website.

 

Visiting Campus & Checking your student out early: When visiting campus or picking your student up early, please be prepared to show your government issued ID. The office staff will request to see your ID every time you enter the building.  Thank you for your cooperation ensuring school safety. 

 

Arrival & Dismissal: For the safety of our students and staff, it is important for all families to follow our arrival and dismissal procedures.  We open our school doors and welcome our students at 8:45 AM.  Students should not arrive on campus before that time.  Walkers should leave their home to arrive at school no earlier than 8:45 AM.  All students should be picked up from campus by 4:05 PM.

 

Transportation: Every student at Powell will be issued a transportation tag for their backpack, which should be used for the entire year.  Please do not remove the tags from the backpack.  Should the tag get removed or lost, please contact our assistant principal, Melissa Hart, mhart@wpcss.net

 

Carpool: Parents using carpool should follow the one way carpool route, which begins on N King Charles Rd, turns Right on Valiant Street, then turns Right into the school parking lot.  In the AM, students should exit the vehicle onto the sidewalk at the bottom of the steps.  Students arriving in carpool should remain in the vehicle until the bell rings at 8:45 AM.  In the PM, every car must display the child’s carpool number.  If you do not have your carpool tag, you will be asked to report to the office to sign out your student.  Students will load the vehicle by the cafeteria sidewalk.  Six students are loaded at one time, using our carpool number and color system.  Cars should remain in the line until all six students are loaded.  Under no circumstances should a car pull around the other remaining vehicles.  All students riding to and from school in a car are considered a carpool student.  Students should never be dropped off or picked up on Marlborough Road.  To assist with congestion and safety, Raleigh City Council has mandated No Parking on School Days from 8:45-9:30 AM and 3:30-4:15 PM on Marlborough Road.  During this time, Raleigh PD may enforce this No Parking Zone by issuing citations as needed.  

 

Here Comes the Bus APP: WCPSS Transportation provides bus rider families with a FREE bus tracking system called Here Comes the Bus, which translates GPS data into an easy to use customizable map that works on a computer, tablet or smartphone. The app allows you to see where the bus is and how close it is to your stop. For more information and to sign up, click here.

 

Walkers: Students walking to school should not arrive on campus before 8:45 AM.  At dismissal, students exit campus through the exterior Multi-Purpose room door.  Parents picking up their child should wait on the sidewalk near this door.  Walking students and families should exit campus promptly.  Students should not be permitted to run or play in the natural areas, around the planted azaleas or near the road and parking lot.  Students considered walkers should be walking to or from school.  If a parent chooses to drive a walker to school, please follow carpool procedures.  Walkers should not be exiting through the walker door and then entering a vehicle.  Please refer to the No Parking information stated above in the carpool section.

 

School Meals: To receive free or reduced-price meals for the 2022-23 school year, families must submit a meal benefits application online at MySchoolApps.com. Paper copies are available in the Powell office. For families who completed the 2021-22 meal benefits application, the benefit continues for their student's first 30 school days of the 2022-23 school year. At elementary schools, full-paid breakfast will be $1.50 and lunch will be $3.00.

 

MySchool Bucks: With a MySchool Bucks account paying for a la carte items is easy. Go to www.MySchoolBucks.com or call (855) 832-5226 to enroll. You'll need your child's Student ID number, available in your registration materials or at our school. Once your account is established you may:

  • Securely deposit funds to your child's account

  • Check balances

  • Set spending limits

  • Review purchases made

 

Report COVID Cases to Powell: It is important for families to report positive COVID-19 cases to Powell. All positive cases should be emailed to Dr. Brower - cbrower2@wcpss.net. Daily reporting allows the district to detect early trends on a campus or across campuses. In keeping with the timeline used by county health officials for public reporting, our Covid-19 dashboard will be updated each Monday with the previous week's cases. If your child is not feeling well, please have them stay home and get tested for COVID-19. If your student tests positive, report this to our school. The CDC recommends that after 5 days of isolation, you can remove the mask if you have 2 negative tests at least 48 hours apart. Consult wcpss.net/whentoreturn to learn when to return after a positive diagnosis. 

If your student has been exposed, they can stay in school as long as they are not experiencing symptoms and have not tested positive for COVID-19. NCDHHS recommends wearing a mask following a COVID-19 exposure.

 

Title 1 Funding: WCPSS uses WCPSS Child Nutrition Services free and reduced school meal applications to determine Title 1 eligibility and funding.  Go online to https://www.wcpss.net/meals to determine if you qualify and complete the online application. To help you, they've shared application information, frequently asked questions and the online application.  Families may also visit our school where paper applications will be available.  

 

Kindergarten Staggered Entry: This week, Kindergarten students will begin school on a staggered entry schedule.  Students will only attend on their scheduled day.  Parents and students are invited to Kindergarten Meet the Teacher on Friday, September 2nd from 10:00 AM - 12:00 PM.  First Full Day for Kindergarten is Tuesday, September 6th, 2022.

 

Tea & Tissues for Kindergarten Parents: Tuesday, September 6th, Kindergarten families, after your little one heads off to their first day of school, stop by the tables by the breezeway for Tea & Tissues with other families and an opportunity to meet our PTA Executive Board.

 

Race for Education Kickoff: Our 11th annual Race for Education fundraiser is scheduled for Monday, October 31st, 2022. Information is coming home on Monday, September 12th.  Be sure to ask your child about it. Please consider volunteering and/or contributing financially to the fundraising effort.  Our goal this year is $20,000. 

 

Family Picnic, PTA General Meeting, & Curriculum Night: Save the date! Join us on Thursday, September 15th, at 5:00 PM for our Family Picnic, first General PTA Meeting, and Curriculum Night. Come meet the PTA Executive Board and approve the PTA annual budget.  The PTA sponsors many academic programs at Powell and supports our teachers in many ways.  Please consider joining our PTA for just $8.00.  Click here to join online. Bagels with Brower: Our first Bagels with Brower is scheduled for September 30th at 9:00 AM. 

 

Magnet Registration Materials: Be on the lookout for Magnet Domain & Elective Registration materials coming home this week.  

 

Emails & Text Message Communication:  Lots of updates and information is shared by text messaging.  If you are not receiving Text Messages from the school, you need to Opt In for School Messenger.  To Opt In, simply text YES to the number 67587. Parent Communication: This school year, Powell teachers and staff will continue using “Talking Points” to communicate information, as well as share curriculum information with you.  Our goal is to engage 100% of our families on a weekly basis.
