Principal’s Otter Splash 10/23/2020
Hello, Oak Grove family! We are so excited to welcome our PreK-3rd grade & Regional Programs Cohort 1/A students on Monday, October 26. If you are in Cohort 1/A, you will also receive a text message at 6:00 PM on October 25 with bus information.
Return to School:
Student Accountability and Required Health Protocols:
WCPSS students, families, and employees have a collective responsibility to create and maintain a safe and healthy learning and work environment. During the COVID-19 pandemic, this responsibility includes every student and employee taking affirmative steps to help minimize the spread of COVID-19 by strictly adhering to the health safety protocols set forth in the Student Accountability and Required Health Protocols document.
Plan B Families: Please make sure to sign and return the last page to Ms. Dahlhoff (adahlhoff@wcpss.net) or your child’s teacher.
Health Precautions
Please see all the information in the OGES Return to Campus guide that pertains to health precautions. Some highlights from that document include:
- Temperature checks and COVID question screening for all students arriving on campus.
- Dedicated Care Center on campus for any student feeling sick at school. Students will be required to be picked up from school if they need to go to the Care Center.
- Requesting that all families keep sick students at home. Any symptom could be cause for concern at school, so we are asking that families make sure children are well before sending them to school.
OGES Return to Campus Guide:
We have created a helpful guide to assist you with all the information you may need for returning to campus. You can find the Return to Campus Guide here: https://bit.ly/2H3m2Sh Please take some time to read through all the updates.
Cohort Assignments
Cohort Assignments were communicated to families on Wednesday, October 7, through School Messenger. If you did not receive your cohort assignment, please contact Ms. Dahlhoff (adahlhoff@wcpss.net). You can see an easy-to-follow calendar here:
Asynchronous Learning Days
The School Board also approved the inclusion of an additional Remote Learning/Asynchronous day for each week when there is not already an interruption to the week. This applies to both Plan B and Virtual Academy students.
Upcoming Asynchronous Days are: October 21, October 28, November 3, November 18, December 2, and December 16. We will also have Remote Learning Days on November 23-24 and December 21-22. Finally, as a reminder, November 11 is a holiday.
Preparing your child for the return to school
- Practice wearing a mask. Please see the information that came from WCPSS on Friday, October 16, in the Student Accountability and Required Health Protocols. There is a form to return to school (you can send it to Ms. Dahlhoff) at the end of that document.
- Practice waiting 6 feet apart. It’s a good idea to help students learn to visualize 6 feet.
- Wash your hands for at least 20 seconds. We will have hand sanitizer available throughout the school, but handwashing is also essential.
Updated Plan for Specials Classes:
We are excited to welcome back our first cohort of students! In order to accommodate both our in person and virtual learners, we have made some changes to our Oak Grove Specials Schedule.
- Plan B (In-person) Students:
- Starting on Monday, October 26th, Specials will be live for our K - 3rd grade in person students and our regional programs. Most specials will happen in the classroom. PE will take place outside or in the multipurpose room.
- Remote Learning/Virtual Academy (K-3rd) Students:
- Starting on Monday, October 26th, Specials will be asynchronous for virtual students learning at home. The instructional content and activities will be housed in Google Classroom. Specialists will be available for office hours to give students and families support and attention to complete any tasks. We want to keep our relationships strong with our specialists.
- 4th & 5th Grade:
- The specials schedule will remain the same until they transition back into the building. Students will access live 20 minute Google Meets each day.
Continuity is a Key Component
To provide an equitable educational experience for your child(ren) in both an in person and virtual setting, we have adopted a concurrent teaching model. Students will still be assigned the same homeroom teacher and may be assigned a “bonus” teacher. Teachers will be working collaboratively to support their students in both settings, while maintaining strong and meaningful relationships with their homeroom class. In some cases, one buddy teacher will handle online instruction (cohort rotations and VA) and one will handle the in-person instruction. In other cases, teachers may be departmentalizing, or sharing instruction throughout the day. VA students will also have “bonus” teachers in many cases.
As students transition back into the classroom, they will be greeted by a team of teachers and learn with familiar peers and some new students, too! Our students accessing instruction remotely will also work with a team of teachers and a combined class of students, while maintaining their current online schedule.
This concurrent teaching model allows teachers the flexibility to differentiate instruction and support students through strategic groups all while putting the social and emotional needs of your child(ren) first.
The details of how this will happen will be shared by your child’s teacher prior to students coming back on October 26.
Please don’t hesitate to reach out to me if you have any questions. Ms. Rhodes and I are here to support you and your family.
Hope everyone has a wonderful weekend!
Stephanie Bias, Principal
