Weekly Update, 4/12/2020
Dear Apex Cougar Families,
I hope this message finds you healthy and well! As we begin this week of new remote learning, please know that we, the Apex ES staff, appreciate all that you are juggling at home. If you have any questions or concerns about how remote learning is going, please reach out to your child’s teacher or to me. Our partnership with you is more important than ever, and we value and desire your feedback!
Parents of Fifth Grade Students: Middle School Registration
Please complete the following step to register your child for middle school TODAY if you have not done so already.
- If your fifth grader is assigned to Apex Middle School for the 2020-21 school year, please complete this online form with them to select your student’s elective. Before selecting, please read this note from the Apex Middle School band director.
- If your fifth grader is assigned to a different Wake County middle school, you should have received an email on 3/27 from Caroline Cockman with directions to register.
Next week our school counselor will follow up with you via email to verify your student’s core recommendations and elective preference for 6th grade.
Camp Hope (YMCA)
Camp Hope will be running from 6:30am – 7:30pm at various YMCA locations in the Triangle. This program is available to anyone who is considered essential personnel at the moment: medical professionals, folks who work in grocery stores, mail carriers, contractors, our friends in hardware stores or other similar businesses, and the YMCA has gotten the green light to include educators who are teaching from home to be eligible for this service as well. Camp Hope is $25 per day and available for registration online at YMCATriangle.org/Essential.
Beginning April 13th: Remote Learning
Starting on Monday, April 13th, teachers and students will start a new phase of remote learning. And while this new phase won’t replace classroom instruction, it will provide equitable and continuous learning opportunities to the extent possible.
All parents can take some basic steps to get the most out of learning at home.
- Create a space for learning with the least amount of distractions possible.
- Familiarize yourself with your child’s learning schedule provided by your school.
- If you have challenges at home, share those with your child’s teacher.
- If you have access to the Internet and a computer, make sure you know the virtual platform your child’s teacher will use. Most will use Canvas, Google Classroom, or Seesaw.

Expectations and Guidelines for Students and Families in Remote Learning
The following guidelines and expectations have been created to ensure that Remote Learning provides continued learning and support opportunities for students and/or families while maintaining maximum flexibility for teachers, students and families. It is important to keep in mind that as circumstances evolve, so will these initial guidelines and expectations.

- New! Apex ES Remote Learning Website is now available for parents and caregivers as a remote learning resource.
It is our intent to provide continuous remote learning in a variety of ways, including pre-recorded lessons, “real-time” or “live” sessions with teachers and students, and/or printed materials when appropriate. All continuous learning will be provided in lessons that students may access in a manner that is not dependent on using a device at a specific time. We recognize that there are significant challenges in access to technology. We have assessed needs around accessibility and are engaged in a process for the distribution of devices.
Some questions still remain regarding grading and feedback practices for students for the rest of the year. Part of working through those questions includes waiting for additional guidance from the North Carolina Department of Public Instruction. WCPSS has provided additional updates on their website. As you are working with your student, there are resources and support available for your family regarding how to log in and how to use specific digital tools. If you have a technology issue and need help, please contact the Student Help Desk at StudentTechHelp.wcpss.net or by phone weekdays from 7 a.m. to 5 p.m. at 919-694-8100.
Student Device Distribution
I would like to thank our staff who helped with our first distribution event, over Spring Break! The next wave of student device distribution will include both wifi hotspots and devices. WCPSS anticipates that they will receive 10,500 WiFi hotspots starting next week. These are separate devices that allow you to connect your technology devices to the Internet. As soon as they arrive, we will immediately begin preparing them for distribution. Learn more > Students who need both a wifi hotspot and a device will be contacted once hotspots are made available.
All Playground and Athletic Fields are Closed
Due to local and state directives, all school facilities including all playground and athletic fields are closed. For the safety of our community, we ask that your family please adhere to the guidelines.
UNC-TV and the NC Department of Public Instruction are expanding their educational programming for all students PreK through grade 12. This will be especially useful for students who have not yet accessed digital resources for remote learning. Learn more >
Maintaining Your Student’s Emotional Safety
WCPSS has provided a website for parents regarding student’s emotional safety during the COVID-19 shutdown.
Food Collection and Distribution
Anyone who needs food assistance should visit wcpss.net/food to find the food distribution site nearest you. If you cannot get food from one of these sites, please contact someone at your child’s school, so we can try to provide assistance. We are continuing to add new food assistance locations and options, so please check this page regularly for updates.
