JDE Weekly Parent Update 1/29/21


Panther parents,

I hope you had a productive week and were able to enjoy the snow yesterday before it melted.  Thank you for everything you did to make this first week back so successful.  As always, please let us know how we can support you or your child.

Updates for this Week:


  • New! Black History Month--Throughout the month of February, JDE will celebrate Black History Month.  Students will watch Black History videos at least once a week during their morning meeting and engage in class discussions. They will also be asked to answer two "Who Am I?" questions each week to help learn about the contributions of African Americans. 
  • New! National School Counseling Week--February 1-5, 2021 is National School Counseling Week.  We are so grateful to work with our amazing school counselor, Mrs. Johnson.  Let's celebrate her and show her our appreciation next week. 
  • New! Aynchronous Day on Wednesday, February 3, 2021--There will be no live meetings on this day.  Assignments will be posted for students to complete. 
  • Library Book Checkout during Remote Learning--
    • ​​​​​​​*Students can go to Follett(Destiny) within their WakeID portal and place up to 5 books on hold at a time.
    • *Books will be pulled and ready for checkout 1-2 days after your holds have been place.  Parents and students will get an email notification to let you know that the books are ready for pickup.  Ex. If books are placed on hold on Monday, books will be ready for pickup by Wednesday if not sooner.
    • *Once families get an email stating books are ready for pickup, you may go to school and pick them up.  Books will be in green bags labeled with the student's name found in the black bin with a yellow top outside the front office doors.  If books are not picked up within 3 days, they will be removed from the bin.  To avoid cross contamination, please do not place books on hold that you do not intend to pick up.
    • *Books can be returned at anytime to the tall green bin labeled JDE Book Return.  Proper quarantine procedures will be followed when books are returned before they are ready for the next checkout.  
    • *If you have any questions regarding library checkout please contact Mrs. DuPont, JDE's School Library Media Coordinator.  Her email is
  • Specials Information for Remote Learning--Art, Music, and PE will have live meets for all students.  Media is still being offered, but it will be asynchronous. Students will be able to find their lesson for the week under the Media tab in Google Classroom.   There are no specials on Wednesdays to allow families time to complete assignments or to have a break from screen time.
    • Art: Supplies needed for Jan. 25-Feb. 12 
      • Mrs. Thompson will be adding some drawing paper and construction paper to the student supply bags that are to be picked up on Monday, Jan. 25.Please wait to use this special paper until the lesson is introduced the week of Feb. 1st and Feb. 8th.
      • Scissors- please provide
      • Glue- please provide, either white glue or a glue stick
      • Crayons or Markers- 8 count (r,o,y,g,b,v,bk,br) and/or more colors

  • JDE School Updates--If you have driven by our school over the last few weeks, you may have noticed several work trucks and a full parking lot. We are excited that our school is receiving a new HVAC system.  In addition to the HVAC, we are also getting new light fixtures, and carpets have been deep cleaned. We anticipate this major project to be completed later this spring.
