JDE Summer Update 7/24/2020

Dear Panther Parents,

Happy Friday!  Most of you know that Wake County Public Schools recently shifted to a Plan B Transition plan for reopening schools. With all of the recent changes, it is understandable if you find it a challenge to keep up with all of the updates.  Please take a moment to take a look at the district FAQ  and read the message below for up to date information. 

While WCPSS has done a great job of answering the many questions from our entire school community, we know that our parents may have questions that are specific to Jones Dairy Elementary School and how changes impact their child.  Please use this form as an opportunity to share your questions with us.  Our goal is to collect these questions and share with the entire Jones Dairy Elementary School Community a Frequently Asked Questions Document (FAQ).  Please know that there are some questions that cannot be answered until we receive additional guidance from the district and state.  

Please know that we are all in this together, and we will do everything we can to support you and your family during this time. 


Plan B Transition and Virtual Academy Details

  • Plan B Transition Students--All students, virtual academy and Plan B Transition students will start the school year remotely.  It is our hope that when it is practical, students in our Plan B Transition classes will be able to slowly move back to face to face instruction in the building.   
    • Pre-K and Regional Program Students--There is a target start date (still tentative) of September 8 for Pre-K and special education regional program students only.  More information will be provided at a later time if this will be possible. 
  • Virtual Academy Students--The virtual academy is the only plan that will offer continuity for students.  Please know if you do not opt in for the virtual academy, and go with the Plan B transition, please pay attention to the potential shift from online to face-to-face instruction.  Those dates are to come but we will let you know.Parents can elect to sign their students up for the fall semester, or for the entire year when they choose to enroll.  
    • New Virtual Academy Enrollment Window--Families will have a second opportunity to enroll in the virtual academy.  The new window is from Monday, July 27-Wednesday, July 29.  Registration will close at 5 pm.
    • Changing Virtual Academy Enrollment-- If you have applied to the WCPSS Virtual Academy and would like to withdraw or change your application, please contact e-mail Mr. Kevin Saeva at between July 27-29.  
  • What is the difference between the virtual academy and plans A,B, and C?--Please take a look at this chart to view similarities and differences between the plans. (Please view the chart on a desktop computer.)

Teacher Assignment and School Schedule

We greatly appreciate your patience while we work through the planning phase.  We are receiving more guidance and essential data each week, and hope to provide you with more information in the weeks to come.

  • Will my child's teacher change?  There is a strong possibility that your child's teacher assignment will change from what you received in June.  We will need to adjust our staffing plan to meet the needs of the virtual academy and Plan B Transition classrooms. 
  • Schedule--We will be receiving more guidance on school schedules within the next week.  Once we receive this information we will be able to begin building our schedule.
  • Target date--I hope to inform families of their teacher and our school schedule during the week of August 10.  If it is possible, we will release this information sooner. 
    • Virtual Open House--We will have have a virtual open house for our families on August 13.  More details will be sent in future weekly messages.
  • The First Two Weeks of School--The first two weeks of school for all students will focus on orientation, meet and greet opportunities, and distribution of supplies. Students will not be initially divided into groups A, B, C during the first two weeks. 
  • Remote Learning--It is unknown at this time how long we will be engaged in remote learning. 


I know that childcare is a hardship for our families that working parents. District leaders are working on childcare options for families. Childcare options will be created with specific price points from free to below-market rates. Community groups will continue efforts to provide space, volunteers, employees and funds. More information will be shared in the near future.


Technology Survey

All of our parents should have received a technology survey this week. WCPSS would like an answer from every family, even if you do not need technology. Please click here to complete the survey if you have not done so already. 

  • Pre-K students’ technology will be addressed separately by the Office of Early Learning.  

  • If you received a WCPSS device in the spring during remote learning, you can select a response in the survey that you were provided a device in the spring that you will continue to use.  So, if that is the case, you would not need to say you need a device, and there is no need to return that device. If you have any questions regarding devices, please e-mail Mr. Saeva ( 

Remote Instruction:  Shifts from the Spring to the Fall

Many families are wondering about how the fall will be different from this past spring.  Below you will find an abbreviated list of changes that were made based on parent and teacher feedback. More detailed plans will come from the district and the school over the next few weeks.



●Consistent experiences & expectations - this means across the grade levels within JDE and in comparison to other WCPSS elementary schools

●Rigor - new standards will be taught and differentiated for students

●Accountability - grades will be kept and assignments/quizzes will be graded and feedback given 

●Communication - improved communication between school and parents 

●Engagement - 2.5 hours of live instruction per day plus live intervention, AIG and specials

●Access - making sure every family has a working computer for each student and wifi if needed

●Support structures - special education, AIG, intervention assistance for all students who qualify for it

  • Orientation for New Panther Families-- Rising kindergarten and new JDE families are invited to a virtual orientation on Thursday, July 30 from 12-1 pm.  Please register for this event here

  • Save the Date--We will be having our JDE Family Movie Night at the Raleigh Road Outdoor Theatre on Thursday, August 6 at 9 pm.  More details will be sent out at a later time.

  • JDE Summer Office Hours--Our summer office hours will be Tuesdays from 8:45 am -12:30 pm, and Thursdays from 12-3 pm.  Please note that face coverings are mandatory on campus and within the building. The safety of our staff and families continues to be a top priority.
