Promoting Literacy:

We are continually building a love of reading in all students.  In addition to their regular literacy instruction, we have many exciting events occurring at HES.

  • Many students have enjoyed our virtual evening story times during the month of February in honor of African American History month. We have learned of some wonderful authors and famous African Americans.  We especially want to than the staff and parents that facilitated the events.
  • Today, all students had the privilege of hearing from Ms. Starling – Lyons, an author that the PTA secured for our students.
  • Next week is book challenge week.  All students are invited to participate:
    • Monday – listen to a guest reader
    • Tuesday – read with your favorite stuffed animal (that fits in your backpack)
    • Wednesday – wear a shirt with words
    • Thursday – bring a flashlight or reading light to school to cozy up and read
    • Friday – dress as your favorite book character
  • We encourage families to engage in these similar activities at home – maybe call a neighbor, grandparent, sibling to read to your child on Monday, everyone in the household cozy up with a pillow or stuffed animal one evening to read. Have some fun while instilling and modeling a love for reading!

Student Cell Phone Use

We have noticed an increase in cell phone use by students and wanted to remind parents and students that personal cell phones are considered personal devices and students are required to follow all aspects of the BYOD contract that parents and students signed.   If your child is bringing a cell phone to school, please review these key points about responsible use during school hours.

  • Students are to use devices at school for educational purposes only.
  • Students are expected to respect and protect the privacy of others and are not permitted to capturetransmit, or post photographs/videos of any person on campus or in attendance of any event to individuals, public or social networking sites unless directed by school staff.”
  • Students are not allowed to use devices during transition times, in the hallways, or at any other non-instructional time unless directed by school staff.  This includes when they are going to the bathroom, during dismissal, or arrival.
  • Devices cannot be used at school for personal texting or personal email.
  • Administration reserves the right to collect and examine any device if the situation warrants.
  • Students are expected to follow the Wake County Public School System Student Acceptable Use of Electronic Resources according to Board Policy 6446. Any violation is unethical and may result in the loss of technology privileges at school, as well as other disciplinary action.
