Board Approves Grades 4 and 5 to Return to Daily In-Person Instruction March 15

The Wake County Board of Education approved a plan for students in grades 4 and 5 to return to daily in-person instruction on Monday, March 15. This means students in grades 4 and 5 currently attending classes in three-week rotations will attend school every day. This decision does not apply to students who are registered in the WCPSS Virtual Academy.

Since fall, the school system has considered state guidance, health data and district indicators when making decisions. A consensus has emerged from those considerations to return to daily in-person instruction at the elementary level. Social distancing in our elementary schools will be practiced to the extent possible.  Face coverings will remain mandatory.

Dreambox February Data:

Our students have done a wonderful job responding to the Dreambox Challenge.  Some students have completed more than 41 lessons in ONE week!  During the month of February, we had:

79.3% of students with sufficient usage are on track to show proficiency on EOG

59.71% of students (412 students) completed 5 or more lessons per week

33.04% of students (228 students) completed 2-4 lessons per week

7.25 % of students (50 students) completed 0-1 lesson per week

  • K-5 Students meeting the minimum recommended usage by completing 5 or more DreamBox lessons per week grew 80 grade levelssince the beginning of the school year.
  • K-5 Students completing 5 or more lessons per week grew 91%more than their peers who have been completing 2-5 lessons per week.

Single Subject Advancement (SSA)

Single Subject Acceleration (SSA) is the practice of placing a student in a higher-grade level in one subject area. This type of acceleration is for the purpose of providing access to appropriately challenging learning opportunities in either math or English Language Arts.  Your child will be skipping an entire year’s worth of content and background knowledge.

Nominations~ February 22, 2021- March 22, 2021

Nominations forms must be received close of school on March 22, 2021.

Food Drive:

The YMCA in collaboration with the Raleigh Dream Center is hosting a food drive from March 1 - March 10.  The Raleigh Dream Center has been a huge contributor and organizer of serving meals in select neighborhoods during the pandemic.  They are asking for donations of canned foods and non-perishable items. They currently have a need for Canned Meats, Granola Bars, and Cereal! They will accept fruit snacks (also a high need) and chips.

A large cardboard box will be located in our main hallway for students and staff to drop their donations.  This is a great demonstration of our “O” on our HERO Matrix – Other People Matter.  I encourage families to have a conversation about how all people matter and we can assist others in time of need. We hope that you all will be able to bring in items and help us serve the community!

Girl Scouts:

Join Girl Scouts for our Parent Series starting on 3/18/21 to learn about getting started with Girl Scouts and more. RSVP @

Our first VIRTUAL fundraiser, “🌈Rainbow Run🌈” will kick off on March 15!  Our goal is to raise money to support our teachers in giving enhanced instruction for our students. It has been a different year in many ways.  Our teachers have gone above and beyond to still give their best to our children every day. Let’s join together to show just how much they are valued and appreciated.

Your donations will help provide:

🌈Grants for each teacher
🌈Grants for each grade level
🌈Cultural arts presentations for the entire school
🌈New library books and new technology.

Help us reach our milestone of $500 per class by donating!

Each teacher will have their own link to their class page for donations. Be on the lookout for an email from your child’s teacher on Monday with more details, or you can go to to check it out yourself.

Please know that any form of donation is greatly appreciated and will help towards our efforts for teacher and grade level grants. Donations may also be made in the form of cash or check.  Our Rainbow Run will last from March 15-31🌈

SPIRIT NIGHT at Moe’s on March 25 from 4-9pm. Come out, grab some tacos, and support HES!
