School Year 2021-2022:
As we begin to experience some springlike weather it is exciting to think about fresh starts and new beginnings. We are encouraged by current trends and WCPSS Superintendent Moore’s recent statements that we are expectant and excited about opening the 21-22 school year as we traditionally do – ALL students being back in the building EVERY day. As a staff we will begin making plans for a “normal” opening and sharing information with you has it becomes available.
We understand this year has been a challenge for all – students, teachers and families and we greatly appreciate your patience and grace. I like to look at each trail as an opportunity and we have all grown SO much over the course of the year. Evidences of growth have been in a multitude of areas – some not always measurable by a number – showing kindness to others, caring for others, awareness of the world around us, increased knowledge of the digital world, perseverance, etc. However, our teachers are also continuously tracking data and we have substantial evidence that students that are attending school each day and submitting assignments are showing growth. This year has not been for naught!
All students are encouraged to participate in the Dreambox Challenge. Students are to win prizes weekly by registering here: https://www.dreambox.com/spring-challenge
Last week you should have received your child’s interim report. Please be sure to review this carefully with your child and I encourage you to assist your child in setting a personal goal for the remainder of the 3rd quarter. This might be to ask a content related question each day, read a personally selected text for 10 min each day, decrease video gaming by 15 min each day, do one extra lesson in Dreambox each week, etc.
Single Subject Advancement (SSA)
Single Subject Acceleration (SSA) is the practice of placing a student in a higher-grade level in one subject area. This type of acceleration is for the purpose of providing access to appropriately challenging learning opportunities in either math or English Language Arts. Your child will be skipping an entire year’s worth of content and background knowledge.
Nominations~ February. 22, 2021- March 22, 2021
Nominations forms must be received close of school on March 22, 2021.
The YMCA in collaboration with the Raleigh Dream Center is hosting a food drive from March 1 - March 10. The Raleigh Dream Center has been a huge contributor and organizer of serving meals in select neighborhoods during the pandemic. They are asking for donations of canned foods and non-perishable items. They currently have a need for Canned Meats, Granola Bars, and Cereal! They will accept fruit snacks (also a high need) and chips.
A large cardboard box will be located in our main hallway for students and staff to drop their donations. This is a great demonstration of our “O” on our HERO Matrix – Other People Matter. I encourage families to have a conversation about how all people matter and we can assist others in time of need. We hope that you all will be able to bring in items and help us serve the community!
In need of afterschool care? YMCA offers a wonderful program right at HES! Check out their site if needed.
Beginning Monday, March 8, families with students who are currently ineligible for school bus transportation (because their school assignment requires parents to provide transportation) may request service for the current school year. Requests are reviewed in the order received, and any approval is for the current school year only.
