HES Announcements 8.28.20
A HUGE shout out to all of our parents for picking up your students’ instructional materials this week. Please keep those in a safe space close to your child’s work area so they are accessible each day. We are off to a great start and ready for learning next week.
P2 for Families is an easy and effective way for families to discuss the importance of character strengths and positive relationships. It is differentiated for grades Pre-K – 2 and 3-5. Each character strength follows a 1-1-3 model: 1 quote, 1 video, and 3 questions to drive conversations around character at home. Please click on this link choose your child’s grade level below to be directed to all of the character strengths.
Next week’s strength is CURIOSITY: Curiosity is a crucial component of one’s character. It is a key element of our desire for wisdom and knowledge.
“We keep moving forward, opening new doors, and doing new things, because we are curious…and curiosity keeps leading us down new paths.” Walt Disney
Dreambox is an online, adaptive math program that is accessible to all students K-5. A schoolwide expectation is for every student to complete 5-7 lessons per week. This can be accomplished during the Instructional Support or Practice times. As a school we are monitoring this data closely to guide our instruction. In addition, there is a correlation between performance on Dreambox and End of Grade testing. Please encourage your student to engage, however, since it is adaptive it is most beneficial if you refrain from assisting them with getting the answer correct so the program can truly see what the student needs.
Set up your family dashboard to monitor your students’ performance by clicking on the bottom right hand corner – “Set Up Parent Access”. This will provide you with emails when your students master specific goals and fun ideas to reinforce at home.
Each day daily attendance will be taken. A student is considered present for daily attendance during remote learning if either of these statements are true:
- A student is present for synchronous instruction.
- If a student completes their daily assignments.
- If a student has a daily check in, a two-way communication, with their teacher. This is the last resort yet understandable while students are still waiting for devices.
During the last 2 weeks of establishing relationships and routines we understand parents attending Google Meets with their children. However, beginning Monday August 31, when we begin full instruction we kindly request that parents do not attend the sessions with their children. This is the same process we follow when we are in person and necessary to reduce distractions for all students. Thank you for your understanding.
WCPSS has been contacting elementary families in need of devices this week with their assigned pick-up date and time. If you only requested a device you should have already been contacted or will be contacted within the next few days. If you need a device and a hotspot you will be contacted at a later date, once WCPSS has secured additional hotspots.
Logging – In:
If you have a device and are having difficulty logging in we will have HES staff at the New Hope Center (A WCPSS meal site) at 133 North Allen St on Monday August 31st from 10:30-1:30 to offer assistance with technology. There will likely be several tents so be sure to look for the HERITAGE SIGN and HES colors.
Please remember to follow socially distance guidelines and to wear a mask.
Effective September 1, families are required to provide a student ID number and pay for their meals based on their meal benefits status. Families are encouraged to use MySchoolBucks to prepay for meals to reduce any payment collections at curbside. Free and reduced-price meals will be available for eligible students. Families may pick up meals at our curb-side locations without a student present if they can provide the student’s name and ID number. Visit wcpss.net/food for updated food distribution location information. Families may still apply for free and reduced-price meals. Eligibility and application information is posted on wcpss.net/meals. For the 2020-21 school year, students who qualify for reduced-price meals will receive breakfast and lunch at no cost. Meals will not be distributed for the Labor Day Holiday. Due to our transition to the National School Breakfast Program, students’ names and student ID numbers will need to be provided beginning Monday, August 31 to receive breakfast for Tuesday, and beginning Tuesday, September 1 to receive breakfast and lunch.
