ELA Instruction:

Our students are busy learning each and every day!  Students in K-2 are enjoying building foundational literacy skills using Letterland. Be sure to ask them about Sammie Snake and Icky Ink. In addition, second graders are engaged with the EL curriculum.  The theme for quarter 2 is Learning Through Science and Story.  Students are paleontologists as they learn about fossils.  Grades 3-5 are also using EL curriculum. Their theme is Researching to Build Knowledge and Teach Others. Third graders are learning about animal adaptations, specifically frogs and writing Pourquoi tales. Fourth graders are learning about animal defense mechanisms as they read and write informational essays.  Fifth graders are studying the biodiversity of the rainforest as they read The Great kapok Tree and write informational essays.  This information is provided so you can engage in a conversation with your child about what they are learning.

Cultural Arts:

We had a wonderful cultural arts program today that all students enjoyed – Hot Horns, a jazz group.  Please ask your students about this experience.

READvolution:

HES is leading all elementary schools in WCPSS with the most books read do far.  Over 3600 books read so far!!! HES will be in a drawing to attend a "Cool School Field Trip" at the PNC Arena to participate in fun activities, and hear from Hurricanes players in February 2020.  In addition, students who achieve the goal of reading 20 minutes per day and totaling 800 minutes will receive TWO complimentary ticket vouchers to a Hurricanes home game.

To log reading hours, students will need to log into their WakeID at wakeid.wcpss.net  Once logged in students should click on the READvolution icon to begin entering their reading information.
