October is Bully Prevention Month:

Every October, schools and organizations across the county unite to raise awareness of bullying prevention.  The goal is to encourage us all - schools, communities, families and organizations to unite to stop bullying and disrespect.

At HES we will be doing a variety of activities within our PBIS framework to reinforce positive behavior.

  • Monday October 7th - #BlueUp - Wear blue for World Day of Bullying Prevention

During the week of October 7th encourage your child to make friends with someone they don't know at school or just start a conversation.  Challenge others to be kind

  • Monday October 23rd - Unity Day - Wear orange to show we are together against bullying and united for kindness, acceptance and inclusion.

For additional resources you may want to use at home or share with other groups you can go to StompOutBullying.org.

Hurricanes READvolution:

This is the third year of our three-year partnership to promote literacy and encouraging students to move more. These initiatives, “READvolution” and “PowerPlay” were created two years ago, initially to commemorate the team’s 20th anniversary that year. It also signifies the continuation of our Strategic Plan Vision 2020. READvolution challenges our elementary schools to each read at least 2,020 books collectively between September 30 and November 22. This effort also invites individual students to read at least 20 minutes outside the classroom each weekday during the same time frame. Please take advantage of the cool autumnal evenings to snuggle up and read with your child.  All ages love to have parents read with them.   As students reach their individual goal of 800 minutes, they will be rewarded with free tickets to Hurricanes games.  More information will be forthcoming from your child’s teacher.

Pep Rallies:

As our staff reflects on School Improvement Plan we have determined to revisit our current practices at pep rallies.  In order for us to adjust appropriately, we will not have 1st quarter pep rallies.  More information will be forthcoming for quarters 2-4.  Thank you for your understanding.

Spirit Days:

Reminder that the first Friday of each month is “Be Kind” day. Students and staff are encouraged to wear their “Be Kind” shirts.

Every other Friday is School Spirit Day. Students and staff are encouraged to wear HES apparel and/or colors.

First PTA Meeting:

We held our first PTA meeting of the year on Thursday Sept 19.  I was glad to meet several parents in a small informal setting, however, we need all parents to take an active role in the support that our PTA provides to our entire school community.  Several ways you can do this are:

  • Join the PTA
  • Assist with the preparations for our fall fundraiser, Fun Run, on Saturday November 16, 2019
  • Be a member of a small committee – Reflections Art Committee (one event in May), Book Fair (2x a year), Goodie Days, etc.

If interested assisting please email our President – Brett Geofffrey at brett@impactpixel.com or Vice Chair – David MacWilliams at david@sugarmapleinteractive .com
