Principal Message Week of May 28, 2023

Good afternoon Davis Drive Elementary families,

What a wonderful Field Day(s) our students and staff had! I’m not sure who had more fun- the students or staff :) Smiles, laughter, and teamwork were all around this past Wednesday and Thursday. A big thank you to Mr. G for organizing a fantastic event!   Our 3rd through 5th graders will be taking the EOGs this week. Please make sure they get a good night's rest and eat a good breakfast on these days.  Please remind your child to relax and use their calming strategies if they start to feel stressed. Our brains work best when they are in the green zone (DDE students will know what this means :)   I’d like to ask for your help in keeping our PTA running. We would not be able to do so many wonderful activities at DDE if it wasn’t for the PTA.  Our PTA is integral to our school running so please join us on June 5th at 3pm to learn more. We currently do not have a Treasurer or VP for the board. Without these positions being filled, we will not have an active PTA at DDE. Please contact Ashley Dashputre’ or myself for any questions if you are interested in holding a position on the board.

Girls on the Run program update

Calling all upcoming 3rd through 5th grade girls and their families! We would love to host another Girls on the Run team at Davis Drive Elementary in the fall, and we need your help to make it happen!

Girls on the Run is a national organization that supports girls in gaining a better understanding of who they are, recognizing the importance of teamwork and healthy relationships, and learning how they can positively connect with and shape their communities and world. The social-emotional curriculum themes include: turning negative self-talk into positive self-talk, understanding emotions, standing up for self and others, forming and maintaining healthy relationships, and making an impact on the community.

In order to have a team at DDE, we need three or more adult coaches (female or male), preferably a combination of teachers, staff, parents/guardians and family friends. The coaching role is a volunteer position that requires in-person training, followed by the commitment to attend the season meetings. You do not have to be a runner to participate and be a great coach!

Once we have the three coaches in place, enrollment for the 2023 fall season will begin in August/September, meetings will begin the week of September 11th and the season will culminate in early December with a local 5k celebratory run. The group will meet twice weekly after school for 75 minute sessions, during 10 weeks. The program fee is $205 per girl; need-based financial aid scholarships are available.

If you are interested in helping us form a team at DDE, please reach out to melissa.kirkton@gmail.com.  In order to make it work, we need your volunteer support! Additional program information can be found here: https://www.gotrtriangle.org/3rd-5th-grade-program-details
