Principal Message Week of May 21, 2023

Good afternoon Davis Drive Elementary families,

We are down to the last few weeks of school. It doesn’t seem that long ago that we were kicking off the 22-23 school year! Field Day is back on for Wed and Thurs this week. We unfortunately had to cancel due to the rain on Friday so let’s all keep our fingers crossed for sunshine this week. I’d like to ask for your help in keeping our PTA running. We would not be able to do so many wonderful activities at DDE if it wasn’t for the PTA.  Our PTA is integral to our school running well, so please join us on June 5th at 3pm to learn more. We currently do not have a Treasurer or VP for the board. Without these positions being filled, we will not have an active PTA at DDE. Please contact Ashley Dashputre’ or myself for any questions if you are interested in holding a position on the board.  EOG results will not be sent home this year as they will be posted in Power School as soon as they are available for you to access (see instructions below).

PTA General Membership Meeting- You are invited!

Members and non-members alike - Please join us on Monday, June 5th at 3pm for our PTA General Membership Meeting. The meeting will take place in the breezeway in front of the school entrance. You may also join virtually at this link: https://meet.google.com/jfx-brcf-gsf

We will share the state of our budget and hold nominations for next year.

This meeting should take about 20-30 minutes.

EOG Results:

Parents of students who took EOG tests this spring will be able to view their child’s Individual Student Report (ISR) in PowerSchool on the dates listed below. To view your child’s ISR, log in to PowerSchool (https://wcpss.powerschool.com/public) and click on State Test Reports in the left side of the menu. (The ISRs will only be viewable in the web-based version of PowerSchool. They are currently not viewable in the PowerSchool mobile app.)

Results will be available:

  • Week of June 19 for all students who tested through June 16*

PowerSchool Parent Portal - EOG Scores will be posted in PowerSchool.

WCPSS has increased information that is shared in the PS Parent Portal. Parents can find transportation information, school assignments, EOG scores and attendance. Every student at Davis Drive has at least one parent with an account. On August 24th you will be able to see who your teacher assignment is for the new school year.

Please fill out the form if you do not remember your login information. https://tinyurl.com/DDEParentPortal

Field Day - Postponed - We need your help!!

Due to the uncertainty of the weather, field day has been postponed and is now on May 24th (K - 2nd) & May 25th (3rd - 5th). Because of this, we need volunteers more than ever! If you are interested in signing up as a volunteer to run a field day station, please sign-up using this link below.  Station Volunteers do not need to be approved by WCPSS because they are not alone with students. Please feel free to sign up for a time slot during your children's field day, or you may sign up for multiple time slots. Thank you so much!

If you have any neighbors who have a rising Kindergartener, or are new to the neighborhood, please ask them if they have registered for school yet. Our numbers of registered students at this point in the year allow me to plan staffing for next year and hire the best candidates if we need to.

Student Survey Grades 4-5:

Students in grades 4 and 5 will complete the annual WCPSS Student Engagement Survey. Your child will be given an opportunity to complete this survey during the school day.

The survey includes questions about teacher-student relationships, relevance of school work, future aspirations and goals, and civic engagement.

The results of this survey helps our school monitor our School Improvement Plans, and help the district track student perceptions about their educational experiences.

You can review the questions included on this survey. Review results of the survey from previous years.

If you have any questions about the surrey or  if you would prefer your child not complete the survey, please complete this form HERE  by Wednesday May 24th.

If you have any questions concerning the content of the survey, please contact the Wake County Public School’s Data, Research, and Accountability Department at wcpssdataaccountab@wcpss.net

Thank you for your continued partnership.

Please note that this is a different survey than the family survey that parents have recently taken.

Girls on the Run program update

Calling all upcoming 3rd through 5th grade girls and their families! We would love to host another Girls on the Run team at Davis Drive Elementary in the fall, and we need your help to make it happen!

Girls on the Run is a national organization that supports girls in gaining a better understanding of who they are, recognizing the importance of teamwork and healthy relationships, and learning how they can positively connect with and shape their communities and world. The social-emotional curriculum themes include: turning negative self-talk into positive self-talk, understanding emotions, standing up for self and others, forming and maintaining healthy relationships, and making an impact on the community.

In order to have a team at DDE, we need three or more adult coaches (female or male), preferably a combination of teachers, staff, parents/guardians and family friends. The coaching role is a volunteer position that requires in-person training, followed by the commitment to attend the season meetings. You do not have to be a runner to participate and be a great coach!

Once we have the three coaches in place, enrollment for the 2023 fall season will begin in August/September, meetings will begin the week of September 11th and the season will culminate in early December with a local 5k celebratory run. The group will meet twice weekly after school for 75 minute sessions, during 10 weeks. The program fee is $205 per girl; need-based financial aid scholarships are available.

If you are interested in helping us form a team at DDE, please reach out to melissa.kirkton@gmail.com.  In order to make it work, we need your volunteer support! Additional program information can be found here: https://www.gotrtriangle.org/3rd-5th-grade-program-details
