Principal Message Week of May 14, 2023

Good afternoon Davis Drive Elementary families,

Thank you so much for your cooperation with dismissal this past Thursday when we had to evacuate the building near the end of the day due to an unknown smell. We always err on the side of caution to make sure our students are safe in our buildings. This, along with power outage from Duke Energy led to what could have been a totally chaotic dismissal. Together, our parents, staff, and students worked together to ensure as smooth dismissal as was possible. I'd like to introduce Ms. Nikia Glass who joins the DDE staff as an AP until the end of this school year. Ms. Glass recently worked in Durham Public School system and is a graduate of NCSU. A big shout out to two staff members: Ellen Govert for winning the Honor a Teacher Award for DDE from the Cary Chamber of Commerce. Janie Steber was surprised this week with an award from Coach Moton from the Velle Cares Foundation. A great week of celebrating for sure!  A reminder that we are having Field Days this week. If you are unsure of what day your child is participating, please contact the teacher to make sure they have appropriate footwear and a change of clothes.

If you have any neighbors who have a rising Kindergartener please ask them if they have registered for school yet. Our numbers of registered students at this point in the year allow me to plan staffing for next year and hire the best candidates if we need to.

PowerSchool Parent Portal

WCPSS has increased information that is shared in the PS Parent Portal. Parents can find transportation information, school assignments, EOG scores and attendance. Every student at Davis Drive has at least one parent with an account. On August 24th you will be able to see who your teacher assignment is for the new school year.

Please fill out the form if you do not remember your login information. https://tinyurl.com/DDEParentPortal

2022-2023 Yearbooks - COMING SOON!!!
Each student will receive a yearbook for the 2022-2023 school year. Payment instructions will be given when yearbooks are sent home. If you do not want to purchase the yearbook, please return the yearbook to the front office.

Field Day Need: Round Water Coolers with a Spout

We are looking to borrow some round water coolers for Field day. If you have any round coolers to fill with water, please bring them to the office during the school day. Please label the cooler with your Last Name and Students Name on it so it can get returned to you! Please drop off coolers to the front office between 8:00-1:00pm on or before Wednesday, May 17th.

Memorial Day - Holiday (No school)

Monday, May 29th

Last Day of School

Friday, June 9th

10:00am is the deadline for dropping off lunches, snacks and water bottles to the cart at the front entrance of the school.

Please make every effort to send lunches and snacks with your children each day when they arrive at school. If you must bring a snack or lunch after instruction begins, you need to do so by 10:00am. Dropping off of lunches after this time becomes extremely disruptive so that is why we do not allow it. Students who do not have a lunch dropped off by 10am will be able to get a lunch from the cafeteria (there are multiple choices including vegetarian options).

Girls on the Run program update

Calling all upcoming 3rd through 5th grade girls and their families! We would love to host another Girls on the Run team at Davis Drive Elementary in the fall, and we need your help to make it happen!

Girls on the Run is a national organization that supports girls in gaining a better understanding of who they are, recognizing the importance of teamwork and healthy relationships, and learning how they can positively connect with and shape their communities and world. The social-emotional curriculum themes include: turning negative self-talk into positive self-talk, understanding emotions, standing up for self and others, forming and maintaining healthy relationships, and making an impact on the community.

In order to have a team at DDE, we need three or more adult coaches (female or male), preferably a combination of teachers, staff, parents/guardians and family friends. The coaching role is a volunteer position that requires in-person training, followed by the commitment to attend the season meetings. You do not have to be a runner to participate and be a great coach!

Once we have the three coaches in place, enrollment for the 2023 fall season will begin in August/September, meetings will begin the week of September 11th and the season will culminate in early December with a local 5k celebratory run. The group will meet twice weekly after school for 75 minute sessions, during 10 weeks. The program fee is $205 per girl; need-based financial aid scholarships are available.

If you are interested in helping us form a team at DDE, please reach out to melissa.kirkton@gmail.com.  In order to make it work, we need your volunteer support! Additional program information can be found here: https://www.gotrtriangle.org/3rd-5th-grade-program-details
