Principal Message Week of September 11, 2022

Good afternoon Davis Drive Elementary families, 

 

We are now full swing into the school year. I get energized every day by your children. I have started doing morning announcements from a classroom each day and I have to say it makes the best start to my day! I share something from the class and then the students say the pledge with me. Ask your child if I have visited their classroom yet for announcements, and if they say no just let them know I will be there soon :)  The nominations for WRAL Viewers Choice Awards are opening soon. Last year Davis Drive Elementary won in the category of best elementary school and our first grade teacher Mrs. Long won in the category of best teacher. How the process works is that the top 5 vote getters in nomination categories become the entries that get voted on in October. Starting Sept. 12, you can submit one nomination per category per day through Oct. 9 on WRAL.com/vcas.  



Reminders: 

  1. Transportation Changes: All transportation changes must be reported by 1:15pm on the day of the change. Please do not text or email the teacher. To make a transportation change you must call the Front Office at 919-387-2130. 

  2. Early Dismissal: All students who need to be dismissed early from school for an appointment or similar must be picked up by 1:30pm. 

  3. Late Arrivals to School: If your child(ren) arrives at school after 7:45am a parent/guardian must walk them into the school to sign them in. Please do not drop your child off and let them walk in the door alone.

Volunteer & Chaperone Information:

The Front Office Staff is working to create lists of cleared volunteers and chaperones for your child's classroom. Are you interested in volunteering or chaperoning in your child's classroom this year? If yes - please review and complete this form If you have questions about this process, please contact Ashley at adashputre@wcpss.net. 

 

The PTA is collecting family contact information to be shared with other families in your child's classroom (with your permission). The information on this form is available to DDES Office staff, Classroom teachers and Room Parents of each classroom. This information will be shared with families in your child's classroom by request only. Families request contact information for reasons including but not limited to birthday invitations, play dates and other social gatherings. Please complete the form here

 

PTA News - Week of September 11th

  2. The Great Dolphin Clean Out -The PTA is collecting donations to be given to teachers and staff to use in their classroom for direct instruction with your child. Donation Drop Off Information can be found here! Thank you for your generosity.

  3. Spirit Wear & Swag - Order yours today! Click here: https://dde.memberhub.com/store Check your students backpack for your order. Allow 2-4 days for delivery once the order is placed.

  4. Stock the Staff Lounge! You may have heard that this summer, under Project TLC, the PTA transformed the Teachers Lounge! It is a restful, quiet, and cozy oasis for them to catch a break during their busy days. We have stocked it with some snacks and beverages, and could use the help of our parent community to help keep these available for our staff throughout the year! View the sign up  here

Carpool:

Please see the maps on the Carpool Information sheet for the changes in traffic flow through the back parking lot in the morning and afternoon.  All transportation information sheets are posted on the DDES website in the Parent > Transportation tab. The only entry to afternoon carpool is from Collins Road.

 

Walkers:

While maintaining a focus on safety, processes have been adjusted for efficiency and are updated on the Walker Information sheet also posted on the DDES website.   Please make sure to remain on sidewalks when entering/exiting campus. Do not cut across the parking lot or grass.  

  • Please submit the Walker Siblings Google Form if your children are to be paired before being scanned and released, even if you already completed a hard copy walker agreement. 

  • Please submit the 3-5 Walker Google Form to verify if your child has your permission to leave campus unaccompanied after scanning or if you would like them to be paired directly with you.  If your grade 3-5 student has been entered in the Walker Sibling form you do not need to also submit this form, even if you already completed a hard copy walker agreement.

"Chess is a great way for children to increase their mental agility, concentration, memory, and analytical skills!

 We look forward to another successful semester of chess instruction at DDE! In our chess program, students learn chess fundamentals and strategies that enhance learning skills and critical thinking. Novice students and experienced players are encouraged to sign up as we have multiple levels of instruction. 

Dragon Knight Chess is dedicated to promoting high quality scholastic chess instruction for players of all levels. Whether you just want to improve your chess knowledge to play with friends or are a serious tournament player, we can help advance your chess skills!"

Chess club will be 2:30-3:40pm in the Art Room. 
1st grade Mondays
2nd grade Tuesdays
3rd grade Wednesdays
4th grade Thursdays
5th grade (and younger advanced students) Fridays
The first semester of the DDE chess program starts on Friday, September 16, and ends on Tuesday, November 15.

 

Snacks:

Depending on lunch time for grade levels, your child may have  snack time during the day. We ask that parents provide a healthy snack and water for their students. If you need help providing a snack for your student or wish to donate snacks to help other students, please contact the counselors.
