Principal Message Week of July 31, 2022

Hello Davis Drive Elementary families!

I hope summer is going well for all of you and you are able to get some relaxation time with your family. We have been hard at work getting ready to welcome our students back into the building for the 22-23 school year! We are excited to share that the halls of our building were painted this summer and we think the students will love the bright and cheery colors! We are so looking forward to having our school buzzing with the excitement of our students learning. :)  You will find information below to help you start planning for the beginning of school. PTA is an important partner in our school community. They help support our students and staff in so many ways. Information from the PTA is below. I encourage all of you to join the PTA to show support for DDE.

Meet the Teacher:

Meet the Teacher will take place on Friday August 26th. Due to parking constraints, we have staggered the times for Meet the Teacher.  Information tables will be located in front of the Media Center and main hallways.  PTA will be there with spirit wear for sale as well as signing up to be a member of the PTA. Class lists will be posted outside the building for each session.  Kindergarten will have a time to meet the team this day (in the gym) but will not find out their individual teacher until after staggered entry (info below).

9:00-9:45              5th and 1st grade

10:15-11:00          3rd and 4th grade

11:30-12:15:         Kindergarten and 2nd grade, ECS 1 and 2

Kindergarten Staggered Entry:

All Kindergarten students will come to school one day the week of August 29th (Mon, Tue, or Wed). Students will be individually assessed and introduced to the school. Our Kindergarten team will create class lists on Thursday. The official Meet the Teacher or Kindergarten will take place on Thursday September 1st from 3:00-4:00pm.

Your child’s staggered entry day will be organized alphabetically by last name.

A-G: Monday August 29th

H-R: Tuesday August 30th

S-Z (and any new enrollees) Wednesday August 31st

Early Release dates:

This school year WCPSS will have 5 early release days from school.  This means that students will be dismissed 2 hours early(12:15pm) on the following days:

September 2nd

November 10th

December 5th

December 21st

March 24th

May 9th

Bus Routes:

They will be posted 10 days before school for those who qualify in your child’s PowerSchool account.   Requests for those who have not previously ridden the bus must be submitted by families on the magenta form at https://www.wcpss.net/busrider.  Bus transportation is not guaranteed for the first day of school if you are submitting the request now. Please contact Rozanne Todd at rtodd@wcpss.net with any transportation questions.

Transportation Tags:

ALL students will receive a transportation tag this year. These tags will be used for carpool as well as walkers, and bus riders. We have made this change for the safety of our students as well as to streamline the dismissal process. Two tags will be given to each family. It is important for the children to know their transportation tag number. There is no need to sign up for these tags as we will be giving each family two tags with the beginning of year paperwork. All children in a family will have the same number. You will need these numbers/tag whenever picking up your children in carpool or walking.

Girls on the Run Club

Is your 3rd through 5th grade girl interested in starting a Girls on the Run team at Davis Drive Elementary this Fall? We need your help to make it happen!

Girls on the Run is a national organization that supports girls in gaining a better understanding of who they are, recognizing the importance of teamwork and healthy relationships, and learning how they can positively connect with and shape their communities and world. The social-emotional curriculum themes include: turning negative self-talk into positive self-talk, understanding emotions, standing up for self and others, forming and maintaining healthy relationships, and making an impact on the community.

In order to start a team site at DDE, we need: 8-15 girls in third through fifth grade, AND three or more adult coaches (female or male), preferably a combination of teachers, staff, parents/guardians and family friends. The coaching role is a volunteer position that requires a 6-hour in-person training, followed by the commitment to attend the season meetings. You do not have to be a runner to participate and be a great coach!

The season begins the week of September 12th and culminates on December 3rd with a 5k run in Cary. The group will meet twice weekly after school for 75 minute sessions, during 10 weeks. The program fee is $205 per girl; need-based financial aid scholarships are available.

If you or your family is interested in learning more about GOTR and helping us form a new team at DDE, please reach out to melissa.kirkton@gmail.com at your earliest convenience.  In order to make it work, we need your support as a volunteer!
