Davis Drive Elementary November 8 Principal's Message

Hello Davis Drive Elementary School Families.  The is the Weekly Principal’s Message for the Week of November 8, 2020.  


Wednesday, November 11 is a holiday -- Veterans’ Day.  There will be no school for students on Wednesday, November 11.  As it is a holiday, we will not have any online or live instruction on Wednesday.  


From our Counselors:


The Davis Drive Holiday Cheer Program is a gift-giving program for families in need. The program's goal is to assist DDE families in need with gifts for their children to ensure they have a happy holiday season. If you need assistance providing gifts for your children this year, please contact us at this email to let us know. Include your name and your children's names. 


From our Media Center:

Parents - we need your help with the Curbside Pickup program for media center books.  The process of running reports, pulling books, sorting into bags, checking out, putting the books in order outside of the school, and emailing parents takes many hours. Every week, we have over 100 books that never get picked up.  

Please check your email accounts every Monday for an email from our media coordinator, Mrs. Fiedler, notifying you that your child's books are ready for pickup.  You will have until Friday of that week to pick up your child's books.  If you can't pick them up for some reason, please email Mrs. Fiedler at  She will be happy to hold them for another week.  If Curbside Pickup is just not convenient for you, please remind your child that they can instantly check out ebooks.  If a child's books are not picked up after three attempts, Mrs. Fiedler will no longer fill your child's book requests.  Thank you for your help!


From our PTA

Hello families!  The DDE PTA will be providing updates via Mr Mack's weekly message instead of our newsletter in an effort to reach more families.  We know this is not a typical year but we would like to tell you more about the PTAs role and why it is more important than ever to join the PTA.  While we unable to run our usual programs we are busy supporting teachers and students behind the scenes through staff appreciation and teacher grants.  Our most recent grants have gone toward PE supplies that can be used while students are socially distanced in school and to provide Scholastic News magazines to all second grade students.  These magazines were always distributed and used as part of the second grade curriculum when students were in person, now all of our students will be able to use them for assignments this year too.

Plan B Students Returning To School Procedures:

Hello Parents of Plan B / Cohort 3 students (Grades K – 3)Monday November 9 is our first day of in-person / face-to-face instruction for Cohort 3 students.  We are excited and want the first day to be positive for our children and our staff.  We care very much about our students and we want them to be prepared.  Our school population is over 800 students. However about 50 students will attend on Monday.  These smaller numbers will ensure that we can transition to school more efficiently.  We know that there may be some procedures that may take a little time to understand and our first week will be to help our students understand procedures.  For example, each student will need to participate in a health screening and have their temperatures taken before entering the school building.  We will work to ensure that our procedures are efficient. 

Cohorts in grades 4 and 5 will begin to attend school in smaller groups during the Week of November 16 and will follow similar procedures.

No visitors or parents to walk students to class.  We have school staff assigned to duties to ensure that students find their classrooms with the support of adults. 

All carpool traffic will enter and exit on Collins Road.  The gate at the front of the school will be closed to traffic. 

While some communication has been sent to parents about bringing laptops and Chromebooks to school, we request that Plan B students leave devices at home for the first week of school.  Teachers are planning instruction for students not to use personal computers at school during this first week.  We do not want our students to worry about their devices this first week. 

Breakfast and lunch are available through our cafeteria for no cost for students.  Please notify your teacher if you want your child to have breakfast. Teachers will take a lunch count at the beginning of the day to inform our cafeteria staff about their needs of school prepared lunches.  Students will eat lunch in their classrooms.  You can find a lunch menu  for November at  There are some modifications to the menu for Davis Drive Elementary for November.  The changes are:


  • 11/10:  Cheese Nachos instead of beef & cheese nachos
  • 11/12:  Vegetarian Lasagna instead of lasagna w. meat sauce
  • 11/13:  Cheese bites w. marinara sauce instead of cheese pizza


Students will have a designated outside time and teachers will supervise students while outside.  Students are now permitted to use our playground equipment.

For students who are on Plan B (face to face instruction in cohorts) it will be important to read the information at  This document has some links for parents to get more detailed information.  One requirement for students returning to school for face to face instruction in Plan B is that parents need to sign and return the from located at


Our school has distributed face coverings to students.  You may use the ones provided by the school, or your child may wear a face covering that you provide.  Face coverings should be worn to cover the students’ mouths and noses.  Masks can be adjusted for a better fit see the link at that demonstrates how to size face coverings. 

For bus riders, students will need to have the bus attestation form that can  be found at

Staff may administer medication to students ONLY when there is a Form 1702 on file at school.  This form should be completed and signed by both the parent and pediatrician.  The school cannot give medicine to your child without this form.  


In addition, all medication given must be in an unopened container, dispensed by the pharmacy (in the case of prescription medication) with the pharmacy label clearly legible. If there is no medication on hand in the event of an emergency, the school will call 911. 


Please note that sunscreen & insect repellant are considered medication and must be accompanied by the completed Form 1702.  Your child must be able to apply this to themselves, as we will be strictly abiding by the 6ft. social distancing guidelines set forth by WCPSS and the NCDHHS.
