Week of March 8 Principal's Message

Hello Davis Drive Elementary School families this is The Weekly Principal’s Message for the week of March 8, 2020.  Remember that Monday, March 9 is a teacher workday and there is no school on Monday for students on Monday.

STEAM Night -- Thursday

STEAM (Science Technology, Engineering, Art and Math) Night is scheduled for 3/12 from 6pm-7:30pm.  This is a drop in event. You will have an opportunity to view all our students submissions to the Reflections Art Contest. Food will be available to purchase from Marco's Pizza and Andia's Ice Cream.

Arrival Information

We adjusted our clocks this past weekend for the Daylight Savings Time change.  For the next week, it may require cars to use headlights in the mornings while arriving at school  during the beginning time for carpool. Please be careful and be sure to follow carpool procedures.  Staff members are expected to report to classrooms and duties at 7:15 am each day. We cannot allow students to wait, unsupervised before 7:15 am.  Additionally we received an update on road closures due to railroad work. We understand that the Davis Drive crossing will remain open. However railroad crossings on Waldo Rood, and Salem Church Road will close during the repairs.  While the Davis Drive crossing may not be closed, we anticipate that the railroad work will contribute to some traffic delays. This will more than likely contribute to even more delays for carpool traffic. It will be even more important for carpoolers to arrive before 7:35 each day.

Single Subject Acceleration (SSA)

The district has released this year’s Single Subject Acceleration information. There is a link to the WCPSS SSA site on our school website under Wake County News. It can also be found here. The window for accepting traditional calendar test requests is March 23-27. Late requests can not be honored per district policy. The testing window for traditional schools is April 20-30.

The following resources may help you to determine whether SSA is an appropriate option for your student:

Parent PowerPoint with Voice Over - File must be downloaded and then “presented” in PowerPoint to enable sound. This is narrated by the district and has lots of good information.

Parent FAQs.

The SSA Test Request Form can be found at http://bit.ly/2020SSATestRequest. Please do not submit these requests to Davis Drive until March 23-27.

Davis Drive Summer Camp

As you may know, Davis Drive hosts an exciting action-filled camp each summer.  Camp hours are 7:30 AM until 6 PM daily. Each week campers will go on field trips to local parks, the movie theatre and many more fun places based on the weekly theme!  Each theme lasts two weeks, and there will be different activities each week. There is a $50.00 registration fee and each week per child is $200.00.  We only have a limited number of spots available in each of the weeks!  Please click on the link below to access the required registration form.

Coronavirus

WCPSS Health Services  continues to keep our school updated with information about the Coronavirus.  We are taking extra precautions to ensure that students wash hands throughout the school day and before lunch. We are attentive to cleaning procedures.  Currently it is recommended that we maintain school plans for field trips and school activities. We will follow the recommendations provided by the school system and health officials.   Our school system will keep families informed of any modifications that occur based on information we receive from our Health Services Team.  The most recent update from our school system can be found at: https://www.wcpss.net/site/default.aspx?PageType=3&DomainID=9265&ModuleInstanceID=4225&ViewID=6446EE88-D30C-497E-9316-3F8874B3E108&RenderLoc=0&FlexDataID=174076&PageID=21500
