Davis Drive Elementary October 20 Principals's Message

Hello Davis Drive Elementary School families.  This is the Weekly Principal’s Message for the week of October 20, 2019.

Early Check-Outs -- We understand that parents occasionally need to make medical appointments for children during the school day.  If this is a need, be sure to follow our check out procedures carefully. It will be helpful to email your child’s teacher with early check-out information when you know this ahead of time.  When a parents arrive at school we will call their child to the office. We do not call students to the office before a parent arrives at school. Understand that your child may be in a special, lunch, at recess, or with their class for an activity somewhere outside of their regular classroom. It will be important to arrive at school in plenty of time to get your child checked out.  In order to check out early, please arrive before 1:45. Our office staff begins to notify teachers and students of changes in transportation near 1:45 and there are many transitions that occur as we are getting ready of dismissal. If you arrive after 1:45, our front entrance is closed, there are only a few parking spaces available, and it is difficult to locate students in a timely manner.   Do not park in the bus lot to pick up students.

The READvolution program is underway! Students are encouraged to read 20 minutes a day. If students read and record a total of 800 minutes, they will earn free tickets to a Carolina Hurricanes hockey game! READvolution ends on December 6th. Directions for logging in to READvolution have already been sent home. Students are expected to record their reading minutes by clicking on READvolution through the WakeID portal.

As an upgrade to our sign-in system for Davis Drive Elementary we are adding a driver license scanner.  This new feature will be similar to sign-in procedures in other schools. To use the sign in system, parents and visitors will need to scan driver licenses.  If a visitor does not have a driver license, then the system will have the visitor enter address and birthdate. Please remember to bring in your driver license to check in as a visitor.   We are planning to instaff the scanner on Monday and we realize that this may take some adjustments to our routines.

We are very pleased with the turn-out that we had for Parent Academy.  We are analyzing feedback surveys that we received and will use the feedback to plan another Parent Academy in March.  Materials from the presentation are posted on our school website until October 25 The link to presentaitons -- https://sites.google.com/wcpss.net/dde-parent-academy/sessions

Bus Evacuation Drill were held this past week.  The drills are conducted for all of our students to know how to exit a school bus in case of an emergency.  Our students use buses for field trips and we feel that is important for all of our students to understand emergency procedures.

With October 31 now being a school day we want to remind families that the school day is not an appropriate time for students to wear costumes to school.  We want our students to celebrate as families see fit beyond the school day. Costumes can become a distraction during the school day.

The deadline for the Reflections Art contest is 10/21!  Reflections is a PTA program where every student can express themselves through the arts in dance, film, literature, music, photography and visual arts.  To enter this contest students create an original work based on the theme of "Look Within" and submit it for a chance to move on to the county level of competition.  We look forward to viewing work from both new and returning participants. All submissions should be turned into the PTA office by Monday. For contest rules and registration forms please follow this link

On Friday, October 25 our PTA is hosting an after-school dance in celebration of our membership.  With the large number of students attending the dance, we may need to provide a rotation of students by grade level to be in the gym.  We will monitor occupancy capacities for our gym and cafeteria and may need to rotate some grade levels to the playground. Parent volunteers and staff will monitor students at the dance and while on the playground.  Permission forms for studetns to attend were to be turned in last week for PTA to schedule volunteers.
