Week of Sept. 29 Davis Drive Elem Principal's Message

Hello Davis Drive Elementary School families.  This is the weekly message for the week of September 29, 2019.

Monday, September 30 is a staff workday --  there is no school for students on Monday. Teachers will be involved in staff development on Monday -- many teachers will attend workshops away from school, or will attend professional development at our school.  Make up days for our missed days, due to weather, will be held on October 31 and December 20. This Monday is not a make-up day.

On Wednesday, October 2, Strawbridge Studios will be here to take individual photos of all students. You may purchase packets of photos in advance.  Please have your child return picture envelopes and money as soon as possible. You can pay online as well. If you pay online, we ask that you return the envelope indicating that you have paid online.  Online payments are to be made at STRAWBRIDGE.NET using the school code FM328471.

Ident-a-kid will also be on campus on the same day as Strawbridge -- Wednesday, October 2.  The Ident-a-kid program is optional and provides a photo identification card for parents as well as an electronic identification card. Information packets were sent home for both Strawbridge and Ident-a-kid.  Ident-a-kid only takes photos of students who have returned an order from.

Davis Drive Elementary will celebrate Walk and Bike to School Day on Thursday, October 3.  While buses and school transportation continues to provide service, October 3 will be a time that we ask those that can to walk to school and promote physical activity.  Walking and biking to school is a healthy activity and is good for the environment. Consider participating if possible.

It is important that we follow established arrival and dismissal procedures.  Remember that Davis Drive Middle School is not a pick up or drop off area for Davis Drive Elementary students.  If you drive your children to school, it will be important for you to use the Davis Drive Elementary carpool areas.  The established procedures were developed with the assistance of Safety and Security, The Cary Police Department, Risk Management, and a parent and school community committee. We dismiss our entire school within fifteen minutes of dismissal. We find that while the line for carpool may appear long, it moves rather quickly.

If you or your child needs assistance during carpool at arrival or dismissal, please use your car flashers to signal a staff member that you need assistance.  While we want our students to be independent, we understand that some cars you child safety locks, or doors can be difficult for small children. If you indicate a need for assistance by turning on your flashers, a staff member will respond as needed.

As for bike riders, it is important for bike riders to walk bikes through crosswalks and when they are on our school campus.  Be sure to pay attention to and follow the directions of our adult duty personnel.

All schools in the Wake County Public School System are being evaluated by a private security company to determine areas for improvement regarding school safety and security.  The company will review procedures, observe sign in and sign out procedures, observe arrival and dismissal procedures, interview staff, evaluate signage, and when the study is complete, they will offer recommendations to our school system.  We look forward to the report. This process is being conducted on the district level and we will hear feedback when the process is complete.

Wednesday, October 2, is National Custodial Appreciation Day.  Our custodian, Bob Truskowski is very responsive to the needs of our school.  Our students know him to be a kind and helpful person. We truly appreciate the work that “Mr. Bob” does each and every day.  He is reliable, conscientious, a hard worker, and is positive in his interactions with students, staff, and parents.

We have a video of our Lost and Found.  You can view the video at Video of December Lost and Found   I have also attached a different version as a file to this message Here. We have found that the video may work by clicking on one of the links for most computers or cell phones.  We would love to get these items back to their owners. The current items will be kept for two weeks and then will need to be donated to charity.  We do not have storage to maintain the lost and found items for a lengthy period of time. If you see an item in this video that belongs to your child, please have the student or parent come by the office to claim lost items.  The items in the video have been with us for a while and will be kept from additional items that may be found in the coming weeks.

Student cell phone/smartwatch policy: students are only allowed to have cell phones on school grounds if they are turned completely off and kept in their backpack. Students are not allowed to use their cellphones during school hours or on the school bus. If a student has a smartwatch, that device must be turned on Airplane mode in order to disable text messages and phone calls from being received by the watch/device.  Students may not use smartwatches and phones as cameras at school. The watch is considered a cell phone UNLESS airplane mode is activated. Otherwise, all smartwatches will need to be powered off and placed in backpacks as well.

Odyssey of the Mind

Odyssey of the Mind program will be hosting a Team Formation Night on Wednesday, October 2nd at 7:00pm. If you and/or child are interested in participating in the program and are not part of a team already please join us on October 2nd! Attending school regularly and being on time helps children feel better about school -- and themselves.  We are paving the way to success in middle school, high school, college, and the workforce. We appreciate that most of our students are on time each and every day.

Enjoy the extra day this week with your family.  We look forward to seeing our students on Tuesday, October 1.
