DDE September 22 Principals'
Hello Davis Drive Elementary families. This is the weekly Principal’s Message for the Week of September 22, 2019
Each year our school system publishes progress reports for schools in our school system. School Progress Reports for 2018 - 2019 can be found on the WCPSS Website. For a quick look at the Progress Report for Davis Drive Elementary, you can click on: https://drive.google.com/file/d/1i8Jpcmj1n31x6z8BFfO9xAfWAYiQgatD/view
Cary Magazine is accepting votes for The Best of Awards. You can share your thoughts on the Best of in many categories in the area including public schools. The link to vote is https://www.surveymonkey.com/r/2020-maggy-awards. There are many categories to select from and you can skip categories if you are not familiar with the categories. Voting will be closed on Friday.
Coming up in October will be our Parent Academy -- to be held on October 17 -- 6:00 pm. This is an opportunity for our staff to share many strategies and resources with our parents. More details will be shared soon, but we want our families to put this date on your calendars.
On Friday we held a Community Assembly. During the Assembly we talked about our Behavior Expectations at Davis Drive Elementary. We use the word SWIM as and acronym for our theme for positive behavior.
- S-- Self-Control
- W - Winning Attitude
- I -- Integrity
- M -- Maintain Safety
These rules can be applied throughout our building and our children clearly understand our Expectations for Positive Behavior. In addition we talked with students about our commitment to use recycling containers in the school to collect chip bags and to keep our school orderly. It will be helpful if your family can also emphasize the importance of positive behavior and being helpful to our environment. For students who bring lunch to school, consider ways to use environmentally friendly packaging when possible.
Cafeteria News:
- Please join us while we recognize World School Milk Day on Wednesday, September 25th! Participate by choosing one of the three flavors our cafeteria carries: fat free chocolate, fat free strawberry or skim milk. Cereal + Milk = Friends Forever 🙂
- Students who qualified for Free and or Reduced Lunch last year continue to receive the status until October 8. In order to continue the benefits for the remainder of the school year or to apply to receive the benefits, you can apply online at myschoolapps.com. You can also get a paper copy of the application through our cafeteria.
- Remember that you can add to your child’s lunch account, set up automatic payments for school lunch, and check purchases and balances at myschoolbucks.com.
On Friday, our PTA Membership was reported to have 351 members. Our goal is 400 members. Plans are being made by our PTA to hold a school dance in celebration of reaching the goal of 400 members by October 1. We are so close to this goal -- a link to the membership form is https://dde.memberhub.store/shopping/categories/1677 .
Our PTA will sponsor Spirit Nights and Paint Your Pot on Tuesday and Thursday of this coming week.
The owner of BrainSTEM Toys in Morrisville has donated new age appropriate STEM materials to each Kindergarten classroom. Thank you for this donation.
Also a very special thank you to our PTA for coordinating lunch from Nazara Indian Bistro. We truly enjoyed the lunch this past Friday. The food was excellent and our staff enjoyed the opportunity to take a shour break and have a nice lunch.
We recently hosted an Author Visit. Scott Reintgen spoke to students in grades 3, 4, and 5. We found out that he lives in Cary, attended Wake County Public Schools, and has a family -- just like us. Our PTA assisted Mrs. Fiedler with coordinating the visit and thus far as sold 145 books.
Picture Day will be here on October 2. For this picture day -- photos are to be purchased on a pre-order basis. Our PTA has many volunteers scheduled to help with this event.
We will host a Walk and Bike to School on October 3. While the National Day is scheduled for October 2, we decided to host the event on October 3 to avoid the same day as our Picture Day.
We look forward to working with our children on Monday. Please help your teachers by being on time daily. It is best to arrive at school before 7:35 each day. If you visit our school, be sure to check in at the office before walking to classrooms or other areas in our building. We have a single point entry of the front door for all visitors. We consider the walkway near the mobiles to be treated as hallways within our building. Do not walk to our mobiles unless you have checked in first through the front office. Be sure to use the waiting pools if you are meeting your child after school to walk home and please follow the carpool procedures carefully. The procedures that we have in-place are in the interest of safety for our school and our students.
