To Carpenter Families,

Good afternoon. We hope this email finds you well and finally adjusted to the new time change. Just when we thought we had ushered in the springtime, snow fell on Sunday!  Even if just for a short time, the snow was beautiful. However, I'm sure we can all agree that we are relieved that there wasn't any makeup school on Saturdays this year! Below are a few school updates:

International Night

Tonight is the big night! We are so excited about celebrating the diverse cultures of our families. Come tonight between 5:30 pm and 7:30 pm! Thank you in advance to Mr. Miller, our Assistant Principal, for coordinating this event with so many families.

First In Fitness

Thursday, March 16th, is our First in Fitness district competition. We can't wait to see how our student athletes perform in relays compared with students in other schools across our district.

PTA Spirit Night

Thursday night, March 16th, is the PTA's Spirit Night. Please come with the family or order online at Piada Italian Street Food at Park West in Morrisville. The address is 2016 Market Center Drive and the promotional code is J4K76T. Thank you for your support of our PTA. Click here to learn more.

Camp Chameleon Workday

The PTA is looking for volunteers to help with Camp Chameleon this Saturday, March 18th, from 10:00 am - 12:00 pm. Contact Mrs. Sophie Bolick with questions at sophie_bolick@yahoo.com.

Early Release

Our next Early Release Day is scheduled for Friday, March 24th, at 1:45 pm. Very soon after this, our next one is scheduled for Thursday, April 6th, at 1:45pm.

Tracking Out

Track 4's last day before a lengthy spring track out is Friday, March 24th.

Tracking In

Track 1's first day back after track out is Monday, March 27th.

Kentwood

We are working with the Kentwood Learning Center's Director to come to Raleigh on the evening of Thursday, April 13th, for a parent engagement event. Stay tuned as more details are to come.

5th Grade Recognition Celebrations

It's hard to believe that it is almost time to plan our 5th Grade Recognition Celebrations! Please mark your calendars for these dates:

  • Track 1 = May 31st at 9:30 am
  • Tracks 2-3 = June 28th at 9:30 am
  • Track 4 = June 28th at 11:00 am

Field Days

Coach Schmidt is busy planning some team-oriented and fun Field Day events. We are planning for these dates:

  • Track 1 = May 31st (5th grade will have their celebration in the afternoon)
  • Tracks 2-4 = June 23rd

Remediation/Retesting Days

Students in grades 3-5, that have qualifying report card grades, that do not pass their Reading or Math End of Grade Tests will be expected to return to school for remediation and retesting on these dates:

  • Track 1 = June 5th & June 7th (change from June 6th)
  • Tracks 2-4 = June 29th & June 30th

WCPSS had to change the retesting date of June 6th to June 7th due to the LETRS staff development that the district had previously paid for and provided for our teachers.

With remediation and retesting with EOGs last school year we celebrated:

  • 13 additional students passed their Math EOG tests

  • 8 additional students passed their Reading EOG tests

  • 4 additional 5th graders passed their Science EOG tests

Black History Month Celebration

We wanted to thank everyone for coming to celebrate our Black History Month Celebration. Our students did a comprehensive and thorough job with their research. We especially wanted to acknowledge our Administrative Intern, Diann Tucker, for her leadership with the event. She led a committee of staff that developed the program for the night: Ms. LeGrand, Ms. Russ, Mrs. Marney, Mrs. DiCicco, Ms. Lunsford, Mrs. Deeb, and Mrs. McKinney. We especially enjoyed seeing the culmination of time and talent of so many chameleons. Who knew Mrs. Peterson-Jenkins could sing so well!!!

La Fiesta Jazz Quintet Jazz

Our chameleons truly enjoyed the Jazz Concert provided by our generous PTA. Many thanks to all the parents and guardians that have financially supported our PTA to make these cultural arts programs possible.

Parents Boarding WCPSS Buses

Last month, we highlighted that parents that step onto a WCPSS bus causing a scene or being out of control with their emotions (yelling, threatening and/or using profanity) could be charged with trespassing. If a parent is issued a "No Trespassing Order" due to their conduct, it would be in effect for a full 12 months. The order would be filed with WCPSS security and local police. This means that unless there was a medical emergency, this parent could not come onto Carpenter Elementary's property. In severe cases, the No Trespassing Order would be in effect for all WCPSS schools for a year. If the parent did come onto school grounds after a No Trespassing Order had been issued, the police would be called. This means that if your child is in a play, receiving an award, or even graduating, this parent would not be allowed on campus. There is no appeal process when a parent has received this order.

None of our parents have done anything to warrant this on our school buses. However, there have been a series of articles in the press recently of this happening with parents in other school districts. I just wanted to educate our community on the importance of addressing discipline situations with school administration in a respectful manner. I wouldn't want anyone to do anything, in the heat of a moment, that would have long-term ramifications on their child.

Respectfully Submitted,

Dr. Fay Jones
