February 7, 2023

Dear Carpenter Elementary Parents,

It's hard to believe that we are enjoying such warm weather in February. But we will take it and be grateful for it. Here are a few announcements that we wanted to share:

Be Like CARY Celebration

Congratulations to Quinn Cheung, Brooklyn May, Anish Bhat, Vishrut Jalandhara, Imani Lett, Adam Alkarmi, Gia Rondon, Aarav Bothra, Ares Vaughn, Shruthi Ravipati, Nirupama Kosaraju, Shreyan Kurapati, Aaradhya Naik, Jalal Alkarmi, Oscar Davletaliev, Stotra Biswas, and Holden Pratt for earning the Be Like CARY award for their classes. We celebrate their leadership for the way they have modeled and guided the right way for other chameleons.

PTA Reflections Contest

We are proud of all nine chameleons that participated in our PTA Reflections Competition. Uma Bhawe placed in the Gold in Visual Arts for the Primary Division. Stella Kim placed in the Silver in Visual Arts for the Intermediate Division. Both students will be representing our school at the state level competition. Kudos to Uma Bhawe for earning a Silver Award in Literature for the Primary Division. We have some very talented and highly creative chameleons!

Student Spotlight

Every year, we recognize one student that represents the cove values of our school. Congratulations to Zealia Sevigny, one of our 4th graders, who was presented with the Spotlight on Student Award at a recent school board meeting. Zealia is a determined scholar that gives her school work her all. She is kind and respectful to others. We celebrate her all around excellence!

Top Performing Teachers

Congratulations to several of our top performing teachers. Mrs. Vines, Mrs. Dale, and Mr. Coffey whose students performed in the top 25 percent of the state and top 25 percent locally, in reading. Kudos to Mrs. Skalski and Mrs. Dos Santos whose students performed in the top 25 percent of the state and 25 percent locally, in math. The awards were not for proficiency on the End of Grade Tests but for the staggering amount of academic growth their students showed from one year to the next. Their recognition is for the 2021-2022 school year.

Black History Month

During the month of February, we celebrate black Americans for their contributions and achievements to our society. Teachers will be including stories about black Americans into our literacy and other lessons. There are several events that we want to make you aware of:

The West Regional Library across from our school is hosting a concert on February 11th from 4:00 pm to 5:00 pm. The United Strings of Color Quartet will introduce the audience to the building blocks of classical music. An instrument zoo will give participants an opportunity to try out playing a violin, viola, or cello. You can read more about this free event here.

On February 28th, we will host a Wax Museum for students in 3rd through 5th grade. All families are welcome to come and learn from our scholars. Mark your calendars and stay tuned for more information.

Letterland Parade

Join us on Friday, February 10th, at 10:00 am, as we cheer on our youngest chameleons. Kindergarten students from several tracks will be participating in a Letterland Parade. Come to clap, cheer, and even hold posters to encourage them with literacy.

Counselor Appreciation Week

The WCPSS Counselor Appreciation Week is February 6th – February 10th. We acknowledge the compassionate work Ms. LeGrand does with social and emotional learning, grief care, divorce/separation support, and friendship issues. We appreciate the backpack buddies program she facilitates so that food insecure students can take home nourishment for the weekends. She also works with area churches to supply our economically disadvantaged students with daily snacks. Take the time to send her a note of gratitude and encouragement.

PTA Science Expo

Our PTA Science Expo is scheduled for February 16th at 5:30 pm. We can't wait to see what scientific conclusions our students have made from their experiments. Students will display and share their results in the multipurpose room (cafeteria and gym areas). Hope to see you there.

Bus Driver Appreciation Week

Bus drivers are certainly hard to recruit and retain. We all know the impact when a driver is out and cannot be replaced with a substitute driver. We apologize for all the inconveniences due to the bus driver shortages. February is North Carolina's Love the Bus appreciation month.  During the week of February 13th – 17th, we ask that you send a note of appreciation to your child's bus driver.

PTA Spirit Night

The PTA’s Spirit Night at Chipotle raised $814.54!!!! That was an incredible amount of money for our PTA. Thank you to everyone that participated.

Track Request Form

The annual Track Change Request period is now open and will be until February 28th. Track changes will be considered for all requested families with decisions being rendered, by email, on May 1st. Approved Track Changes will be for the 2023-2024 school year. Click here.

Twitter

If you would like to see all the amazing K- 5th grade art creations from the Carpenter Elementary School student body, then give us a follow! This Twitter page shows student artists in action and features selected, completed projects from Mr. Hann's amazing art class.

It has been many weeks since we have reported anyone for COVID-19. We appreciate parents keeping children home when they have a fever and cold/flu-like symptoms.

Have a wonderful week.

With chameleon pride and spirit,

Dr. Fay Jones
