We trust you had a cherished time with your loved ones over winter break. It feels so good to be back at school seeing all our chameleons and hearing about their adventures over track out/winter break. Here are a few school updates:
PTA Holiday Support
Thank you so much for your generous spirit and giving nature. Because of your hands-on support, our PTA was able to bless 21 families with gift cards to Food Lion, Target, and/or Walmart for the holiday season. We so appreciate the way that Carpenter families take care of our own community!
We are so grateful to Hope Community Church and New Life Church for their donations that provide daily snacks to our economically disadvantaged students. A plethora of snacks are given to our guidance counselor, Ms. LeGrand, to distribute to our students in need. These churches have also supplied our students with water bottles, underwear, t-shirts, and socks. They work closely with our school guidance counselor and social worker to meet the needs of many of our students.
We are so proud of the students that logged the most amount of minutes (in their grade level) in December on Myon :
Maria Lopez Vera Livia = 5th Grade - 462 minutes
Reme Stanislaus = 5th Grade - 402 minutes
Nora Peytcheva = 4th Grade - 980 minutes
Richa Misra = 4th Grade - 731 minutes
Mihir Narang = 3rd Grade - 743 minutes
Alex Taute = 3rd Grade - 626 minutes
Brynn Roy = 2nd Grade - 317 minutes
Danna Yasmeen Bashir = 2nd Grade - 312 minutes
Adrian Gursky = 1st Grade - 362 minutes
Laurel Dale = 1st Grade - 302 minutes
Subhaang Srivastava = Kindergarten - 527 minutes
Sargi Virk = Kindergarten - 351 minutes
We celebrate these students and their commitment to literacy. For the last three months, Carpenter Elementary has placed in the top three schools for the amount of minutes students have spent on MYon.
Kids Heart Challenge
Our optional Kids Heart Challenge is underway and so far our families have raised 12% of our $10,000 goal. Ms. Coffey's small but mighty class is in the lead by donating $334. The class with the highest donation at the end of the event with help Mr. Schmidt pick out a new haircut!
PTA's Book Fair Results
We want to extend much gratitude to Mrs. Jennifer Burge for chairing our Book Fair in December. She organized volunteers and gave so much of her time to our Book Fair working alongside Ms. Alston, our Media Specialist. Our school community purchased $17,578.45 in books and other products. Because of your sales, we earned $3,548.18 that can be spent on replenishing our Media Center's books and including new series into our book collection. Thank you so much for supporting literacy at Carpenter Elementary.
Congratulations to our Book Fair basket winners: Arianna Espinoza Rodriguez, Richa Misra, Jerasi Gomez Ventura, Berit Johnson, Nithin Chandrasekaran, Callum Short, and Bailey Johnson.
Nationally Board Certified Teachers
We are so proud of the teaching excellence of Mrs. Alyssa Perry, our 2nd grade teacher, on Track 2. She has earned her National Board Certification. Ms. Sheila Alston, our Media Specialist, renewed her National Board Certification.
Spotlight on Student
Annually, each school in WCPSS can recommend one student to spotlight their personal achievement at a school board meeting. Congratulations to Zealia Sevigny for being selected to represent our school due to her hardworking nature and commitment to education. We are proud of her and her achievements!
PTA Cultural Arts Program
We are pleased to announce that the PTA will be sponsoring a Hip Hop poetry artist for the next Cultural Arts performance. The performances are scheduled for January 18th at 1:00 pm and 2:00 pm as well as January 19th at 9:30 am and 10:30 am so that our entire school can participate. The program is called "Baba Got Bars" and features Baba Bomani teaching the writing process through Hip Hop. You can learn more about this artist and his style of teaching here. Everyone is invited to attend!
Track 3's last day before Track Out is Wednesday, January 18th. We wish them a restful track out.
We welcome Track 4 back on Thursday, January 19th. We trust they had a wonderful track out.
Our next Picture Day is Thursday, February 9th for Tracks 2 & 4. Tracks 1 & 3 will have their Picture Day on Wednesday, February 15th. Students will be getting individual pictures taken as well as class pictures.
PTA's Science Expo
Calling all Chameleons! We need your scientific curiosity on display at the 2023 Science Expo, which is scheduled for Thursday, February 16th, from 5:30 pm - 7:00 pm. Any student in K-5 is welcome to participate and display their experiment. Start brainstorming your ideas now and get started! Students need to follow the scientific method and create a trifold display of their experiment and findings. For a short, fun resource on the scientific method, check out this video.
Students that have been in school since the fall of 2022, need to have their immunization records and North Carolina Health Assessment forms turned in before Friday, January 27th. Students that do not have this information will not be allowed to come to school after this date. This generally pertains to our Kindergarten students and our Data Manager, Mrs. Jamison, will be in touch if your child's records have not been submitted.
5th Grade Recognition Ceremony Dates
For your planning purposes, we wanted to share our 5th Grade Recognition Ceremony Dates as soon as we could. Track 1's celebration is scheduled for Wednesday, May 31st at 9:30 am. Track 2 and Track 3 will celebrate on Wednesday, June 28th at 9:30 am. Track 4 will celebrate at 11:00 am on Wednesday, June 28th.
EOG Testing Dates
Many families have requested the dates of End of Grade Tests. The state of North Carolina must first select the testing window and then WCPSS and Carpenter Elementary can set the exact dates within these windows. Stay tuned!
Students in grades 3-5 that do not pass their End of Grade Tests (that have the qualifying grades) will be expected to return to school for remediation and retesting on June 1st and June 2nd (Track 1) or June 29th and June 30th (Tracks 2-4). Please keep these dates in mind when making travel plans.
We hope everyone stays warm and has a fantastic week for teaching and learning.
