Words cannot express how grateful we are for all the ways that our parent community has surprised and delighted us this last month. You exceeded expectations for the amount of families that came out to support our Book Fair. You shattered initial goals for donations for our PTA's holiday assistance program. You shocked us with the sheer volume of donations for our All for Books program that provided books for chameleons in need. We are truly humbled at the parent response when we ask for assistance. Thank you for your enormous hearts for helping others and making our school the #1 School in America! Below are a few school updates:
On Wednesday, December 21st, we will have an Early Release Day. Students will be dismissed at 1:45 pm.
Track 4 leaves December 21st for track out. We wish Track 4 well as they enjoy their extended winter break.
We have three days of school this week. Our first day back after winter vacation will be Tuesday, January 3rd. Mark your calendars as we are closed on the first Monday in January.
We look forward to welcoming back our Track 1 families on Tuesday, January 3rd. This will be Track 1's official track in day.
Carpenter Elementary's students have ranked #1 in WCPSS for the amount of myON minutes recorded in October and November. myOn is the district's new online literacy library. This program ensures that students can engage in high-quality reading practice with thousands of digital books and age-appropriate articles. We are extremely proud of the reading success of our students!
Be Like CARY Award Winners
Companies often say that they are more interested in hiring employees with strong EQs (emotional intelligence quotients) rather than IQs (intellectual quotients). Although both are important, we recently celebrated students that display respect for other students, school rules, and school personnel. Congratulations to our CARY Award winners: Neil Thombre, Jonathan Henderson, Phoebe Jenkins, Sophia Gitarts, Matthew Lopez Velasquez, Maddox Mease, Mateo Castro-Zavala, Brooks Burge, Amen Moreda, Jordan Liboon, Evan Hallam, Alejandro Roque Hernandez, Abigail Alston, Catherine Logue, Danna Salazar-Vazquez, Avery Chen, Sophie Anne Lemke, Isaac Corbett, and Jia Soni. We salute them for their EQs and respect for others.
Teacher of the Year
We congratulate Cindy Klaus as our Teacher of the Year. Mrs. Klaus is a K-2 reading intervention teacher that is patient and skilled in teaching students reading strategies. Her peers voted for her for this esteemed honor.
Diane Kent Parker Award Winner
Congratulations is also in order for Ajia Lunsford who has earned the Diane Kent Parker 1st Year Teacher of the Year Award. Ms. Lunsford provides engaging, and dynamic lessons for our Track 4 kindergarten students. She fosters a positive classroom climate. Administration selected Ms. Lunsford for this remarkable honor.
We have had three days that we have not had an afternoon bus driver for students living in the Carpenter Village and/or Cameron Pond neighborhoods. We anticipate that this could happen again in the coming winter months. These two neighborhoods are closer to our school so these routes could potentially be impacted again by bus driver shortages. It would help us tremendously for families in these neighborhoods to obtain a carpool number. It makes the carpool line go so much faster when we are able to record numbers vs. names. You can obtain a carpool number by filling out this form. We will send the carpool tags home with your child.
Kids' Heart Challenge
In January, Coach Schmidt will be facilitating a Kids' Heart Challenge to raise awareness for physical fitness and the impact it has on hearts. He will be partnering with the American Heart Association for this optional fundraiser. You can read more here.
PTA Cultural Arts
We are so fortunate as our PTA is generously providing a cultural arts program for all students on Wednesday, January 18th & Thursday, 19th. Poetry and the writing process will be highlighted in this Hip-Hop musical performance. Learn more here.
PTA Spirit Night
The next PTA Spirit Night will be held at Chipotle's at Village Market between the hours of 4:00 pm and 8:00 pm on Tuesday, January 24th. Come dine in or pick up a dinner order to go and a percentage of your purchase will be donated to our PTA.
As you begin to make your travel plans for the end of the year, keep in mind when school ends. June 2nd is the last day of school for Track 1 students. However if your child does not pass the End of Grade tests in grades 3-5, your child may be invited back for remediation and retesting on June 5th and 6th. The last day of school for Tracks 2-4 students is June 28th. However, if your child does not pass the End of Grade tests in grades 3-5, your child may be invited back for remediation and retesting on June 29th and June 30th.
Last week, we reported one individual for having COVID. We are starting off this week by reporting one person for testing positive for COVID-19.
We wish everyone a safe and happy holiday season.
